Totally agree - a yoga class with 5 heaters turned up to the highest level is SO uncomfortable and completely unnecessary. I’ve done these classes and feel awful afterwards, completely dehydrated. As a yoga instructor, I truly hate this trend!!
If sweating meant I was losing weight faster, I'd be paper thin just from my morning walk to work. In reality I just overheat super fast when doing any physical activity. Or even barely any activity sometimes. I'm always the person taking off their jacket in a store because I don't wanna get sweaty. Especially since getting sweaty (outside of exercising) just makes me nervous and in turn more sweaty. A vicious cycle that y'all didn't need to hear about but here it is.😂😂
I have Fibromyalgia and can relate to this so hard. I always need air conditioning when I exercise and I layer up because I know I will not be able to wear a sweater all day unless I'm in a cold environment. People that know me look at me funny when I wear a t-shirt because it is so rare, but I overheat so easily and actually get nauseous, dumb, and super irritable when I get too hot. The weird thing is I can often handle outside heat a little bit better , but inside it is very low tolerance.
Omg I wish I could translate this to Spanish and send it to my gym. I live in Torreon México and it is VERY hot here. At my gym they don't turn the A/C on because people want to sweat. I am a very sweaty person and always leave soaking and very red from the gym. I tell them to turn on the A/C and people actually get mad. They say I came here to sweat! And I'm like literally just stand outside its almost 40 °🥵. It is soooo annoying.
I sweat a ton, but I totally agree that it’s not an indicator of a ‘good’ workout. Usually it all depends on what you’re doing, the environment you’re doing it in, and if you generally sweat more or less than the average person. Thanks for another great video!😊
I am quite a sweaty person 😢. I sweat when stressed, when moving around, while walking, while breathing, while eating, while cleaning the house. I prefer colder weather just because of this. Why do some people want to get sweaty so much? Because it feels so 🤢 to me. Though I know sweat is natural and normal in certain conditions, it still bothers me because I usually get too much of it compared to other people that always look fresh no matter the weather / situation 😂. I even have some friends who wrap up their tummy in plastic or some kind of material while they exercise to have a flatter stomach. Like... Why would you do that? Can you spot dehydrate / sweat even 😅? Anyway, Justina, I really enjoyed this video! As usual, saying some truths for the fitness world to grasp ❤
love this, i was suckered into this trap and creators touting their workouts as the best because of how much of a sweat you get. this led to me doing a lot of very high volume high rep workouts and getting repeated injuries
I care more about how much fun I'm having at the class than anything else. I'm slowly training towards becoming a group fitness instructor. I don't know if I want to work for a brick and mortar exactly for the reasons you described.
Ooh, such a good topic! I used to put so much stock in how much I sweat during my workouts. So much so I bought a Sweet Sweat trainer to help me sweat more during workouts. While I love the glow of a good sweat, I know I don't need to drip sweat constantly
Another great video, Justina! Whenever I do a workout, which is mainly on TH-cam. Whenever I see the creator "shiny," I do think I didn't work hard enough. It's just, yet again, another thing that the fitness industry wants you to think sweat = burn fat, good workout
A fellow sweat-er! I inherited my dad’s Ultra Sweat Gene so I sweat if it’s like 1 degree too warm in my environment. Also if I breathe. Or sleep. I was perpetually sweaty when I was in college and walking everywhere. Just wet, always.
Justina I agree with you 💯. I have never sweated much doing weights and don’t obsess over it; cardio much more in a group fitness environment than at home - because there are more people in the room at the gym making it hotter and my workout space at home is in the basement. Your tales are as you say not black and white and you’re very fair. Glad TH-cam algorithm led me to you - in a world of toxic disinformational influencers you’re a gem. Keep it up!
I do love a sweaty workout..not because I think it is "better" than a non sweaty workout. It just feels good after: take a hot shower, eat something yumm and drink water...I just love that whole process. I have noticed since it has been freezing where I live, haven't had many sweaty workouts.
I barely sweat.. although I'm really fit. That's cool in normal life.. but I love it when it's hot outside and I finally start to sweat a little bit because the feeling afterwards is sooooo good!
I always wondered, as I don’t sweat much in winter. I still don’t sweat a lot in a workout, even in a Phoenix summer. Someone once told me my workouts weren’t good because I didn’t sweat enough! I’m glad to know that isn’t the case.
Great video! We just had a short heat wave in Toronto before the AC in my building was turned on and I still wanted to do my workouts. I was definitely sweating more than usual and that was mostly (entirely?) because of how hot it was in my home. Always appreciate your take on things!
Writing this just before I workout. My workout is going to be done outdoors on my back patio, and it's just a few degrees above freezing. One of my main reasons for outside workouts is I don't sweat nearly so much. Sweat is just the body's way of cooling down, but it also depletes the body of salts and electrolytes, which then need replacing. Plus, I don't get told off by my wife for making the living room stink of sweat if I do it outside. 🙂
I think since your previous mention of sweat being not such a BD, I've noticed that focused lower-body strength sessions have me sweating SO much more than focused upper-body workouts! And I know I kicked my ass in that latter workout. So...checks out! :P (I should note that I'm generally a very sweaty person.) Oh my gosh, I just thought of something! So the hot class makes you so dehydrated and **detoxifies** your body, which is supes important cuz our bodies, like, can't do that on their own! BUT then they always tell you (probably to avoid getting sued) that you should drink lots of water over the next few hours. So. When you simplify it to "You might look slimmer if you sweat a ton of water weight away, but you'll go back to your usual "look" once you rehydrate" ... how's that for a return customer guarantee?? So wily, these fitness marketers. Question: was your group fitness cert through NASM or somewhere else? That's the next one I'm doing, and I'm still trying to pick an org!
Oh man I bought into the sweat theory. I used to hardly sweat at all. Even cardio, just a glisten 😄 after having kids I sweat A LOT and I thought that was good haha
I barely sweat when I workout. For a long time I thought that was a problem. Then I realized some ppl sweat during workouts and some don't. But, if I'm out on the patio in the sun or helping with gardening, I WILL sweat. Lol 😂 that's bc the sun is a major heat source .
I don’t need any gadgets to help me sweat more, I start sweating during my warm up and by the time I’m done with my workout I’m dripping (which is kind of embarrassing!!) I don’t understand why people would want that 😳
Just to throw information out there: If somebody out there enjoys sweating all that much, I suggest you try to move to Saigon, Vietnam. Welcome to the city I love where the weather is stupidly hot and humid that every workout is a hot workout. Hot yoga, hot pilates, hot strength training, etc etc - all from the comfort of your living room 😂
Hey Justina just discovered your channel and really appreciating all your content. Getting back into workouts after time away and not feeling well. Wanting functional movement for quality of life as I age and learned about Sydney Cummings through you and also was curious about P Volve again as I am wanting to make sure to start where there is coaching about form and programs available. You mentioned to reviewed P Volve but can't find the video on your channel and was curious your current thoughts on functional movement programs for beginners. Thank you for all your content!
The Christmas theme is fun! I sweat soooo easily when I work out. I'm a dripping mess after. LOL. My husband doesn't sweat nearly as much. I know it's not indicative of any extra effort.
Hot yoga $1000 a year and after a 90 minute Bikram class I felt exhausted in a not good way not to mention not being allowed to drink water until after the first Eagle pose and told not to use props.
Hey there! Always enjoy your videos. Certain cardio workouts make me sweat for an hour or two after, even after showering. I am familiar with EPOC but never understood why certain cardio workouts do this to me and others don’t regardless of intensity. Is this type of after sweat excessive?
It's hard to say without knowing you, your health, your environment, your workouts, etc. But if you're worried about it I'd recommend seeing your doc :)
@@JustinaErcole thanks! It’s not accompanied by any other adverse reactions just soaking through about two shirts. It usually happens with HIIT workouts that are 35 minutes or less. I thought it was my metabolism burning extra fat until I started watching your videos. Lol. Thank you for the reality check! I think I just go harder in shorter HIIT workouts. I’m actually relieved to know it’s not necessary to get the results you want.
There is a cool book on sweat that also goes into cool sweat facts haha - “sweat: a history of exercise” and another one is “the joy of sweat” cool data
Unless I'm really going at it, I don't sweat even in 80s temp. I do like a good sweat since I feel it helps to clear my skin... could just be in my head though
While I agree, I think a lot of it is down to a personal satisfaction factor for a lot of people. I admit to really enjoying having a visible sweat spot on the front/back of my teeshirt when it happens. You can't SEE fat coming off - but you can see a sports bra outline on a shirt and think, "heh, I did that," and feel kind of good about yourself in the moment - even though exercise is, at its core, a long term benefit, it gives you that immediate dopamine/reward response. Probably the same reason people try and aim for muscle soreness, even though that's not an indicator of muscle growth!!
I got a free three month Apple fitness subscription with my Apple Watch - I would be interested to see your thoughts on apple fitness if you haven’t already done a video on it!
Oh fair enough! I’m enjoying it but it’s really made me realise how we are fed a diet of very slim, young, traditionally ‘hot’ people constantly on social media workouts, because apple fitness has an incredibly diverse bunch of instructors from every walk of life - including coaches with disabilities, and I’ve realised how unusual it is to actually see diversity represented in the fitness industry.
Sweat is overrated! I hate how much I sweat to the point where it became the main reason I’d procrastinate workouts, just knowing my hair will be soaked and salty. I think everyone has a diff threshold for breaking a sweat.
My weirdest experience with this was when I worked out, outside in February. I was cold. I was very cold. I didn't sweat the way I usually would. I got a great workout in, but it was very odd knowing that if I was doing this inside I would have had sweat pouring off of me. Sweating is a great indicator of whether or not I can get a good stretch session in because more sweat means I was warmer and it's just easier for me to stretch when I'm warmer. (all you people who don't sweat - I hate you)
I thought sweating was also part of our body detoxifying that not true? Also why would one person sweat more than the other? Like I am super sweaty but I know people who aren't super sweaty does that have to do with internal body temperatures?
