Many thanks to morinoroba for sending the audio files, taken from a Denon CD. This label released the complete recordings of Neuhaus in Japan on eleven discs. Many of these are still not very known in the west, where Neuhaus is mainly remembered as the writer of the book "The Art of Piano Playing" and as the teacher of great pianists such as S. Richter, Gilels, Vedernikov, Virsaladze, Lupu and many others. They deserve wider availability and recognition, e.g. the recording of the Etude-Tableau is hauntingly melancholic and beautiful...

Yes, this is absolutely tremendous.
I think, the very core of music, the moment music becomes more of simple sounds, even more than an audible event : a message for soul(s), something ultime, which cannot be surpassed.
Neuhaus giving us that.

Posterity's verdict on Neuhaus as a great teacher is no doubt accurate as far as it goes, but it is unbalanced in that it fails to acknowledge Neuhaus's greatness as a pianist. His sensitive artistry and tonal beauty - easily detectable even through the relatively poor sound on the video - are both wonderful.
I often prefer him to his pupils)
In the Russian old school, he was considered to be the best Scriabin interpreter, together with Sofronitzky (many didn’t get to hear Horowitz)

Much closer to the style of Rachmaninoff's playing than the likes of Richter. It's flow plus plenty of opening up of space when relevant, rather than an overall trudge. All of these works are pretty poorly represented by the mainstream style today. It's ironic that his pupil Richter seems to pioneered the plodding norm that became standard.
So much freedom in the phrasing unified in long lines!
Marvelous playing! It's no easy feat to bring expressive continuity to the 2 Preludes. Neuhaus does great things with them. In fact, his layered playing, and melody projection are first class.
EXACTLY right! Probably the finest lyrical playing I've meard since a middle aged Horowitz gave us some medtative Scriabin. This man's control of an infinite variety of subtle dynamic gradations in shaping phrases and his great sense of unity and continuity in presenting each piece in its totality is nothi'ng less than marvelous. And he does it incredibly well, despite inferior recording techniques and a less than magnificent instrument. LOVELY!

His 39/2 is a miracle of good taste and “vision”.
We'll after Richter and gilels, my teacher studied with one of neuhaus students, and now I'm studying with her. So Russian school of piano is still in existence, and I'm loving every moment I get to study with her and I can't believe the lineage I have with neuhaus.

23/1: A highly emotional and even agitated rendition. I think of this as being rather calmer and more cool, except for the climax. Very musical and well-controlled. 23/4 More emotional than Richter's.

No doubt he was Richter's mentor. The ideas are pretty close, and the philosophy is the same. Neuhaus does more rubatos though.

MARVELOUS! Agree with sirdicaudore below 100%. Too bad Neuhaus and other Russian pianists of this era were sabotaged by tin can pianos.
Both Preludes are beautiful in their conception, although I could conceive of more satisfying presentations. The Etude Tableau needs to be far more reflective and
introspective in manner; I sincerely feel that it should not push forward so urgently
as it does here.
This is 'awesome', but English, especially US speaking world overused that keyword to define other simple things. Even with impervection of recording made back in those days (such as high notes are a little dull, but the same is experienced when he plays accords in fff in a-minor edude, so - clearly a recordings inability to bring high range of notes).
Нейгауз, Richter, Gilels died... Do people play like that? No disrespect, Kissin is great, but, this is not the same :(

I believe He's musically superior to Richter. I'd like Richter to play with such rubato and romantic feeling. Richter is a modern pianist .. more powerfull technique...he's the King of Prokopiev... but in Chopin I prefer his master)

+chad414 Well stated. Exactly. In fact, if you listen to his other recordings, he plays Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Chopin, Scriabin, and others in the same expressive style, as if they were all the same composer. Evidently he was an inspiring teacher.

@@pianoredux7516 he had his own force of personality, it shows, he plays beautifully and intellgently, it shows, he was very well regarded in his day, i know people who knew him personally, i wish i had that oppurtunity, he was a great musician for sure.
