      The train on my wedding dress had a small ribbon, (or was it twill tape) loop on the underside that hooked over my middle finger. ( My dress had the deep pleats at the shoulders.) Some of the details are hard to remember as I was married 55 years ago yesterday.

    After watching you get dressed, I thought -- Why are there so many hateful cartoons of them looking naked underneath? And then, you stepped into the light and for one moment, we saw your true silhouette. This was VERY informative both about the layers and the reason why "other" things were concluded. And to answer your question below -- YES! Please do film the washing! I find that once upon a time, we could get dirt and grass stains out, and now, I am sorely pressed to be able to do it with JUST modern detergents. This could be very informative and helpful for the costuming community who will -- inevitably-- find their hems badly soiled. Thank you for this video. The red pointy spencer was MAGNIFICENT!!!! NAILED IT!!! Stay well! Looking forward to more!

    • @maidenrohina
      @maidenrohina 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've found that the magic ingredient for getting stains out is bicarbonate soda, you make a paste of it with a little dish soap, and then spread it out on your stain and lay it out in the sun for a few hours or 24 hours if there's no sun. Also if your fabric can handle it rubbing the fabric and paste together with your hands to cause a little friction and get the paste deeper into the fabric can also help if it's a really deep stain. Then once it's ready to wash, you can just put it in your machine, paste and all, and wash it on a regular cycle (use cold water though) and then air dry. If the stains really bad or old you may need to repeat this a few times, but I've never had to repeat it more then once and I've used this method to get engine oil out of a red linen skirt before. Also depending on fabric content you can mix lemon juice and bicarbonate soda together and use that paste to whiten your whites in the sun.

      That is one of my methods too if the sunlight soap doesn't work! It has worked on many of my kids clothes!

    • @lizcademy4809
      @lizcademy4809 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maidenrohina Baking soda is good, but if you can find it, washing soda is even better.
      My laundry products cabinet usually holds detergent, chlorine bleach, Fels Naptha soap (I need to find washing soda and borax locally), and ... lighter fluid. With those, I can get out almost every stain - the lighter fluid works on those impossible stains that you can't get out any other way. It got 3 year old makeup stains out of a cotton shirt (don't ask).
      I do not own fabric softener or dryer sheets. Useless modern marketing gimmicks! :-)

    Some modern bridal bustles are made using ribbon. I would assume that historically this was likely. A thread loop at the hem and twill tape ties at the waist (inside) would do the trick. Ribbons slip so twill or self made ties would be best. I prefer small clear buttons and thread loops for bridal in my alterations business.

    Love the whole look! I thought that gowns had a wide band of darker color on the bottom to hide the dirt and minimize stains. Also, I have heard of a wide strip of material made of woven horsehair sewed to the underside of trains to gather the dust and keep it off the gown material. Not sure if that’s a real thing or not, but it does sound practical.
