Lay deserves every award he got and is going to get. Because he co-produced this song, took place in writing the lyrics, took place in making the choriographie, he was the writer of the mv and he also payed all the fees for the mv with his own money and as you can see it cost a lot. So I feel so proud of myself because I stan the right person.
The story in the "Lit" MV, Lay said, is based on his favorite Chinese historical figure. In the MV he is portraying a Chinese general who has been trapped by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife. The general is a real historical figure named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. In the beginning of the MV you hear a Peking opera singer performing “The Song of Gaixia” which is a song that Xiang Yu composed for his wife, Lady Yu, who eventually took her own life. (Fun fact: In Lay's song "Jade" which is a song also on this album, the story is supposed to be about Lady Yu and Xiang Yu's love story.) Everything about this song and MV is a poetic, cinematic masterpiece. For example, the word Lotus in Chinese sounds a little like Lit in English. (Another play on words, just like the Chinese pronunciation of Jade sounds like Yu or you in English, which Lay cleverly used in his song "Jade." Get it? Jade = Yu and Jade = you.) Lay used lotus (Lit) as a metaphor for no matter how hard people try to bring him down, he will stand strong and survive through anything the world throws at him, like a lotus flower. The Lotus often represents purity. The Lotus is special because it grows in the mud, but out of the most dirty and unforgiving conditions, blooms one of the most beautiful flowers. The Lotus is a famous symbol in Chinese culture and it often represents how something good and pure can grow and triumph despite what you would think are unforgiving conditions. Lay has said that the idea for "Lit" comes from the fact that his haters have been calling him "White Lotus," which refers to someone who acts innocent, and uses it for his gain and plays the victim all the time. So when he wrote the song he took that negativity and embraced it and turned it into something positive. So, in other words, he is saying: "You thought you could bring me down, but you are wrong. I am not a fake white lotus, but I am a true lotus who is LIT. I am more powerful then you know and I will rise above all your negativity and show you how I grow even stronger and more beautiful no matter how much mud and dirt I have to go through," etc. The dragon is a very powerful symbol in Chinese culture and it is even said that if you are Chinese you are a descendant of the dragon. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize vitality, strength and good luck. In one interview I read, Lay also talked about how he has two dragons inside him -- a good dragon and a bad dragon. He said he always chooses to listen to the good dragon. The good dragon is the one who is protecting him and helping him through all his hardships and difficult times. So the main theme of "Lit" is about fighting his inner self and learning to ignore and overcome the people who are trying to knock him down. Lay is is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. And "Lit" is a prime example of that. As you noticed if you study the credits, you see that this MV was produced by Zhangyixing Studios, which is named after Lay -- he owns the studio. So, the credits show, Lay has his hand in almost every aspect of this production. He is the one that wrote and composed the song, he even produced the beat himself. He is his own beat-maker. He is also executive producer, he came up with the storyline, he helped choreograph and he helped direct the MV, etc. But that's normal for Lay's solo work With Lay, when you ask who did it? -- for any part of the song, MV or choreography -- you are pretty much guaranteed that the answer is: Lay. He does it all. He is such a perfectionist that there is almost nothing that he is involved in that he doesn't have 100% control of himself. He prides himself in the fact that all aspects of his music are created by him. This MV took more than 6 months to make and more than $1.2 million to produce. And it was all done by Lay.
I loved the lotus imagery everywhere (the embroidery on the back of his robe at the beginning was stunning. I wish I could study it up close.) And it matched his message so clearly, maintaining purity and integrity in dirty, muddy environment). The dark waters get repeated so often. I wonder how it relates to the black ink that he has on his hands in one scene and begins to put on his face. Does it refer to the old saying (being marked by black ink) about taking on the character of the company you keep? If so, I find that an interesting tension with the image of the lotus which remains untouched.

Also, I hope you're not trying to minimize what is going on in the prison camps--there is actual killing, slavery, and a long list of human rights abuses happening daily. Additionally, Lay has made his statements during particularly tense times, such as during the height of the Hong Kong protests, where he voiced his support for Chinese authorities invading Hong Kong. This is more than Lay simply saying "yeah I think China is cool" as an off-hand remark. Let's not try to sugarcoat it.
As much as some of this is true, he is called LIAN = white lotus in chinese ( NOT LIT; lit is the english title which is used since it sounds like lian. He frequently uses this technique even in previous songs like Jade = Yu in chinese and he also uses the eng word YOU in the song). White lotus and Sheep were names used by haters towards yixing saying his innocent appearance is just a facade.This isn't necessarily a declaration of war. He's simply taking those ill words thrown at him and use that as his strength. Other interpretations aren't really confirmed either since those were just fan interpretations.
@@AsianPopStop I agree with you. I am a huge Yixing fan since his early debut years but I also do not tolerate his views since even my country has fallen in the hands of china's cruelty and greed. I can also assure that a lot of his fans (long-time and non-bandwagon fans i may say) know how to separate admiration for his work to expand the reach of music from how we disagree with his views about his country and we are striving hard to reach him, help educate him, and widen his view about the society (not only about his country but with different social issues as well). But we should not forget that he grew up learning the views engraved by their country in them. Then again, that is no excuse to not be educated and find ways to do what is morally right and humane. Hopefully he will soon understand better and not just blindly support their govt. Lastly, I would like to ask where you got the info that he holds another citizenship? I don't think there's any truth to that. He is Chinese and with no other citizenship. Ah, Yu, my Yu, What will your fate be? （Translation: Burton Watson ） This is a poem made by the Western Hegemon (霸王) of the Chu (楚) Kingdom, called Xiang Yu (项羽) when he and his army were trapped by the Han army (not enough soldiers and food), right before his death. It is a poem that reflects the life of Xiang Yu, and it is very famous and often used in modern music. I hope more people can appreciate the Chinese culture with Lay's amazing music 💕
The MV was filmed 9 months ago at Zhejiang Hengdian World Studios in China, the world’s largest outdoor film studio. More than a hundred background actors were involved in this MV. He personally spent $1.4M for the overall production. The company that made the effects for the Lit MV is Dexter Studios. This is the first time that they have produced a music video as they usually make movies, such as the Oscar-winning "Parasite." The word 莲 "lian" (which sounds like lit in chinese) means LOTUS. The slang the haters used to say to him is 白莲花 (bai lian hua) which means someone who is pure in appearance, but opposite inside. But lotus is a holy and pure image in Chinese history which is not a small thing like those haters said. The bad metaphor happens these years from some ignorant and stupid people. He speak highly of it and correct the reputation for it as irony to the haters. Another thing is that there's an old metaphor about lotus: 出淤泥而不染 (which he used in the lyric of this song), which means growing and living in the mud/silt but not being stained or dyed by it, referring to the world vs him as a person and his goal and dreams. He used the 2 different sides of the word lotus. The overall MV is based off of Lay’s favorite Chinese historical figure fighting oppression. The MV is the portrayal of a Chinese General’s entrapment by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife. The general named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. The voice in the 1st 1min of the MV is actually the voice of a Peking opera artist singing “The Song of Gaixia” which the General composed for his wife Lady Yu (potrayed in Lay’s song, Jade) who later took her own life Lay released his semi-autobiographical book “Independent 24” or "Standing firm at 24." In the book, Yixing talked about how he thinks he has 2 dragons inside him, the good & the bad. He always listens to the good one, which the dragon protecting him and helping through the difficulties. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, strength, and good luck. This could be the reference to the dragon from the mv is helping him to fight the enemies.

Lit, not only as a MV, but as a song is one of the most amazing things i ever saw or hear. It's just so incredible and to think he did almost everything by himself it juat makes me proud of having him as my favourite. Lay is musical genious and he deserves all recognition!

He did a masterful job and now I know why it sounds so good. My favorite part of this song is the Chinese instrumentals and sounds Lay used in this song.

Lay danced krump for this mv coz he thought krump was a suitable dance style for this music and what he wanted to express. He's on street dance of china rn and he performed lit and also danced more krump! Apparently krumpers characterise themselves as roles e.g. king or crown and lay characterises himself as king when he dances krump. I'm not completely sure if this is true but someone commented this before. But before he dances he makes a crown with his fingers and puts it on his head

This was awesome! The production was definitely crazy! If I remember correctly, I saw a post explaining that the video is alluding to a part of Chinese history where Lay is portraying a general. I hope you guys check out the rest of his album even if you don’t film a reaction! There’s two parts. The first one has similar vibes to this one with some RnB too. The second part is more laid back. My favorites are the last three tracks from the second part it’s more acoustic.
Thank you for reacting to this, I really didn't expect you guys to do it because my first reaction to it was that there's not much going on musically, and it's more visually attractive and has a super cool vibe, but I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it. Also, the name 'Lit" is similar to the Chinese word meaning 'Lotus', which is what Lay's antis have called him in the past, because it is a flower that blooms from mud and dirt, meaning that he is not as good as he seems on the outside and he's filthy (sorry my boy :(( ). So basically he did a play on words to come back at the haters ^ ^ Finally, I did a bit of research before on the instruments, and if I'm not mistaken, Lay explained himself that he used Chinese instruments like Hulusi (gourd flute) and Guzheng (zither, which Henry mentioned in the reaction) to make all the songs in the album, but he didn't specifically say it for each song, so I'm not sure if Lit also used zither or was it pipa like Henry said. Lit has similar pronunciation as lotus flower in Chinese, and it describes a Chinese religious belief of the duality of life and death. In lit mv, general Xiang Yu (in Peking opera costume) is the past life and Lay in modern clothes is the present life. Dragon is the spirit and soul, and the lotus flower and witch help pass along the spirit. Another meaning of Lotus flower is the symbol of growth and purity because it grows and blossoms out of mud. Some people also use it to describe someone who is pure and innocent in appearance but maybe opposite inside. Lay’s antis used to call him white lotus because they don’t believe such a huge star could be so honest, humble, hard working and respectful to others. They also mock at his dream of bringing Chinese music to the world, saying that all of his hard work and effort will go in vain. This song is Lay’s answer to their bully. “No one beat me down, I walk my own path, I’m the lit”.

This is his first half of his 4th album. If I am not mistaken, he said that his first half will focus more on mixture of traditional instrument and modern. Then he said his favorite is the 2nd half, which is more modern.

I’m sadly rusty on chinese history, its like a movie soundtrack trailer. Lay deserves every award he got and is going to get. Because he co-produced this song, took place in writing the lyrics, took place in making the choriographie, he was the writer of the mv and he also payed all the fees for the mv with his own money and as you can see it cost a lot. The story in the "Lit" MV, Lay said, is based on his favorite Chinese historical figure. In the MV he is portraying a Chinese general who has been trapped by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife. The general is a real historical figure named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. In the beginning of the MV you hear a Peking opera singer performing “The Song of Gaixia” which is a song that Xiang Yu composed for his wife, Lady Yu, who eventually took her own life. (Fun fact: In Lay's song "Jade" which is a song also on this album, the story is supposed to be about Lady Yu and Xiang Yu's love story.)
Everything about this song and MV is a poetic, cinematic masterpiece. For example, the word Lotus in Chinese sounds a little like Lit in English. (Another play on words, just like the Chinese pronunciation of Jade sounds like Yu or you in English, which Lay cleverly used in his song "Jade." Get it? Jade = Yu and Jade = you.) Lay used lotus (Lit) as a metaphor for no matter how hard people try to bring him down, he will stand strong and survive through anything the world throws at him, like a lotus flower. The Lotus often represents purity. The Lotus is special because it grows in the mud, but out of the most dirty and unforgiving conditions, blooms one of the most beautiful flowers. The Lotus is a famous symbol in Chinese culture and it often represents how something good and pure can grow and triumph despite what you would think are unforgiving conditions.
Lay has said that the idea for "Lit" comes from the fact that his haters have been calling him "White Lotus," which refers to someone who acts innocent, and uses it for his gain and plays the victim all the time. So when he wrote the song he took that negativity and embraced it and turned it into something positive. So, in other words, he is saying: "You thought you could bring me down, but you are wrong. I am not a fake white lotus, but I am a true lotus who is LIT. I am more powerful then you know and I will rise above all your negativity and show you how I grow even stronger and more beautiful no matter how much mud and dirt I have to go through," etc.
The dragon is a very powerful symbol in Chinese culture and it is even said that if you are Chinese you are a descendant of the dragon. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize vitality, strength and good luck. In one interview I read, Lay also talked about how he has two dragons inside him -- a good dragon and a bad dragon. He said he always chooses to listen to the good dragon. The good dragon is the one who is protecting him and helping him through all his hardships and difficult times. So the main theme of "Lit" is about fighting his inner self and learning to ignore and overcome the people who are trying to knock him down.
Lay is is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. And "Lit" is a prime example of that.
As you noticed if you study the credits, you see that this MV was produced by Zhangyixing Studios, which is named after Lay -- he owns the studio. So, the credits show, Lay has his hand in almost every aspect of this production. He is the one that wrote and composed the song, he even produced the beat himself. He is his own beat-maker. He is also executive producer, he came up with the storyline, he helped choreograph and he helped direct the MV, etc. But that's normal for Lay's solo work With Lay, when you ask who did it? -- for any part of the song, MV or choreography -- you are pretty much guaranteed that the answer is: Lay. He does it all. He is such a perfectionist that there is almost nothing that he is involved in that he doesn't have 100% control of himself. He prides himself in the fact that all aspects of his music are created by him. This MV took more than 6 months to make and more than $1.2 million to produce. And it was all done by Lay.

I already appreciated everything about Lit and Lay, but this hard and made me a bit emotional. He really is amazing. As an artist and as a person
I loved the lotus imagery everywhere (the embroidery on the back of his robe at the beginning was stunning. I wish I could study it up close.) And it matched his message so clearly, maintaining purity and integrity in dirty, muddy environment). The dark waters get repeated so often. I wonder how it relates to the black ink that he has on his hands in one scene and begins to put on his face. Does it refer to the old saying (being marked by black ink) about taking on the character of the company you keep? If so, I find that an interesting tension with the image of the lotus which remains untouched.
Haters made *Lay* very angry and this is a war declaration, the interpretation to this mv is that this is a message to the haters that hurts him a lot ,he is surrounded by haters (and is alone) he is a lit (white lotus: the haters call him lit "in Chinese culture it mean someone who is pure in appearance, but opposite inside) he is the king (the king of music in China), music is his arena (so the fight has to be there) , the dragon (those who support and love his work) will fight for him and protect him, his music or his mission is not to fight the hatters but to promote Chinese culture

As much as some of this is true, he is called LIAN = white lotus in chinese ( NOT LIT; lit is the english title which is used since it sounds like lian. He frequently uses this technique even in previous songs like Jade = Yu in chinese and he also uses the eng word YOU in the song). White lotus and Sheep were names used by haters towards yixing saying his innocent appearance is just a facade.This isn't necessarily a declaration of war. He's simply taking those ill words thrown at him and use that as his strength. Other interpretations aren't really confirmed either since those were just fan interpretations.

I can also assure that a lot of his fans (long-time and non-bandwagon fans i may say) know how to separate admiration for his work to expand the reach of music from how we disagree with his views about his country and we are striving hard to reach him, help educate him, and widen his view about the society (not only about his country but with different social issues as well). The MV was filmed 9 months ago at Zhejiang Hengdian World Studios in China, the world’s largest outdoor film studio. More than a hundred background actors were involved in this MV. He personally spent $1.4M for the overall production. The company that made the effects for the Lit MV is Dexter Studios. This is the first time that they have produced a music video as they usually make movies, such as the Oscar-winning "Parasite."
The word 莲 "lian" (which sounds like lit in chinese) means LOTUS. The slang the haters used to say to him is 白莲花 (bai lian hua) which means someone who is pure in appearance, but opposite inside. But lotus is a holy and pure image in Chinese history which is not a small thing like those haters said. The bad metaphor happens these years from some ignorant and stupid people. He speak highly of it and correct the reputation for it as irony to the haters.
Another thing is that there's an old metaphor about lotus: 出淤泥而不染 (which he used in the lyric of this song), which means growing and living in the mud/silt but not being stained or dyed by it, referring to the world vs him as a person and his goal and dreams. He used the 2 different sides of the word lotus.
The overall MV is based off of Lay’s favorite Chinese historical figure fighting oppression. The MV is the portrayal of a Chinese General’s entrapment by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife. The general named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. The voice in the 1st 1min of the MV is actually the voice of a Peking opera artist singing “The Song of Gaixia” which the General composed for his wife Lady Yu (potrayed in Lay’s song, Jade) who later took her own life
Lay released his semi-autobiographical book “Independent 24” or "Standing firm at 24." In the book, Yixing talked about how he thinks he has 2 dragons inside him, the good & the bad. He always listens to the good one, which the dragon protecting him and helping through the difficulties. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, strength, and good luck. This could be the reference to the dragon from the mv is helping him to fight the enemies.

He did a masterful job and now I know why it sounds so good. My favorite part of this song is the Chinese instrumentals and sounds Lay used in this song.

Just wanted to share if you’re interested to learn more about Chinese music, I got an introductory on a show called I’m CZR where prominent music artists in China battle their own written/produced songs every week. Lay joined the second season and it’s cool cause the competitors come from different music backgrounds and they analyze each other’s work based on their own musical perspective.
Man i loved that show but everyone was tired having to write something up constantly. Definitely a good watch though.

Lay danced krump for this mv coz he thought krump was a suitable dance style for this music and what he wanted to express. Apparently krumpers characterise themselves as roles e.g. king or crown and lay characterises himself as king when he dances krump. This was awesome! The production was definitely crazy! If I remember correctly, I saw a post explaining that the video is alluding to a part of Chinese history where Lay is portraying a general. I hope you guys check out the rest of his album even if you don’t film a reaction! There’s two parts. The first one has similar vibes to this one with some RnB too. The second part is more laid back. Thank you for reacting to this, I really didn't expect you guys to do it because my first reaction to it was that there's not much going on musically, and it's more visually attractive and has a super cool vibe, but I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it.
Also, the name 'Lit" is similar to the Chinese word meaning 'Lotus', which is what Lay's antis have called him in the past, because it is a flower that blooms from mud and dirt, meaning that he is not as good as he seems on the outside and he's filthy (sorry my boy :(( ). So basically he did a play on words to come back at the haters ^ ^
Finally, I did a bit of research before on the instruments, and if I'm not mistaken, Lay explained himself that he used Chinese instruments like Hulusi (gourd flute) and Guzheng (zither, which Henry mentioned in the reaction) to make all the songs in the album, but he didn't specifically say it for each song, so I'm not sure if Lit also used zither or was it pipa like Henry said.

Lit has similar pronunciation as lotus flower in Chinese, and it describes a Chinese religious belief of the duality of life and death. In lit mv, general Xiang Yu (in Peking opera costume) is the past life and Lay in modern clothes is the present life. Dragon is the spirit and soul, and the lotus flower and witch help pass along the spirit.
Another meaning of Lotus flower is the symbol of growth and purity because it grows and blossoms out of mud. Some people also use it to describe someone who is pure and innocent in appearance but maybe opposite inside. Lay’s antis used to call him white lotus because they don’t believe such a huge star could be so honest, humble, hard working and respectful to others. They also mock at his dream of bringing Chinese music to the world, saying that all of his hard work and effort will go in vain. This song is Lay’s answer to their bully. “No one beat me down, I walk my own path, I’m the lit”.

This is his first half of his 4th album. If I am not mistaken, he said that his first half will focus more on mixture of traditional instrument and modern. Then he said his favorite is the 2nd half, which is more modern.

Will you react to the whole album? The first part uses a lot of chinese traditional instruments, the second part is more to modern songs. Personally think that LIT is Lay’a best album. 💜

I’ve been waiting for his new album which is the first version to came out, teasers along with concept photos. It’s finally here OMG someone pinch me? I’m sadly rusty on chinese history, its like a movie soundtrack trailer. There’s so much but I don’t know where to start since I still can’t get over how darn hardcore LIT our boy is being with a DRAGON, LYRICS and KILLER VISUALS 👀🔥while trying to expand China to the world through music even though local anti fans, critics and anyone else don’t want that to happen 🙄 So in MV Lay (Lotus) is fighting against them (JADE). Childish anti fans kept calling him lotus which means “Fake who only looks innocent but is evil” so his response back to them was this masterpiece called “LOTUS” same pronunciation as “LIT”, despite the lotus being drowned in darkness; he maintains his unsoiled purity.* Regarding the Sheep name, antis also called him that which is why he responded with his song “SHEEP”. After this everyone will know who Lay Zhang is (The King of China) and if they don’t then they must be in extreme deep sleep. He plays both male & female roles and IN MY OPINION when he says “Taking China to the World” I think the song speaks for today’s generation about being done with the political issues, hatred, discrimination between countries and wants it to end because its a new year a new decade; things need to change if their countries along with the world is ever going to strive forward and he wants to be the first to break through that wall.
