    I’m obsessed with Nelson Eddy and Jeannette MacDonald as I too know what it is to have a love of your life! How heartbreaking they only had a limited time with each other. She IS wearing the ring Nelson gave her for her “wedding” ring. Love it! She DID indeed LOVE only Nelson!

    I just love this episode. Jeanette is one of my favourite singers and actresses of all time. A lot of people badmouth her husband Gene Raymond for being a bad husband to her, but you can see the love, affection and devotion between them.
    My favourite part of the episode is the scene stealing Nelson Eddy. What a tremendous voice he had. So powerful. If only we could've heard Jeanette's singing in this episode.
    I love the presenter. He has so much charisma and his enthusiasm is infectious. I was born in the wrong era in some ways. Thanks for uploading this treasure.

    I shall treasure this forever! My grandmother introduced me to Jeanette's movies. She loved her so, and so do I. Loved the moment when Nelson Eddy walked in. They were such a great team, the Singing Sweethearts. They really should have been allowed to marry (from what I've read). Their love for each other is so obvious.

    • @DDumbrille
      @DDumbrille 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnneCherch Sorry, not really. I still remember when their clips came up during 'That's Entertainment', the audience laughed out loud -- every time. (I loved that film -- introduced me to the great MGM musicals, so I saw it at least a dozen times back in 1974.) Yes, they had good voices, but they were SO corny, so...laughably over-the-top. And here, Eddy ends his song on a note that's WAY too sharp. But hey...just my silly opinion. I can certainly understand why you loved them so much if your grandmother introduced you to their movies so long ago. It was a different time, more innocent -- or so they wanted us to believe -- at least on the screen.

      @@NinaWassamatta They were laughing at them when That's Entertainment premiered in 1974. It's worth noting that none of the other greats were laughed at in that amazing compilation, with perhaps the exception of Donald O'Connor. But his routine was MEANT to be funny. They may have been beloved by many 80 years ago, but they've been a joke for the last (almost) 50 years.

    So very special--a tribute to a marvelously talented, gorgeous woman! Her voice, a charm; her sense of pitch, perfect! I loved her films when growing up, especially in high school when Jeanette came to my home town and presented a few of her films at a popular theater. I missed the event due to studies and such, but apparently she gave a brief message before each film was shown. She gave the challenge to Hollywood to honor a rich musical past to make pictures that educated the then 20th century entertainment hungry population! Today we have a lingering reminder via VHS and now DVD!

Nelson and Jeanette were the very best at what they did - I still enjoy seeing their films as TCM runs them often. Just wondering, and maybe some of the ladies out here can help me out: HOW EXACTLY did one remove that seemingly indestructible Hazel Bishop lipstick? With paint thinner?

    I wished Nelson Eddy would've sang, "Sweetheart, Will You Remember Me," to Jeanette. :-)
    I've seen their 8 movies, listened to their singing on TH-cam; several times.

    Found the stories interesting and enjoying; which had me watching some of the movies again and again.
    Sad to hear about their struggles staying in the relationship, long term.

    Upsetting to watch because I know from all that I have read that they never stopped loving one another even though they
    were married to other people.
    They were both under contract
    to different studios and they weren't allowed to marry due to this. So sad. So as I watch this,
    I can sense how uncomfortable
    Jeanette was.. the best acting job that she probably had done in her
    life. My heart went out to Nelson Eddy, too. He adored her until the day that she died and after, also as he had admitted in an interview. I also find it rather interesting that she was wearing a necklace that I believe, Nelson Eddy had given to her. How hard it must have been for them both to pull off this charade. It was so phoney. I believe that I'm correct in my observations. If not, someone please come forward to correct me. My heart just ached
    as I watched this.

    • @AngelaM55
      @AngelaM55  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your insightful comments. Regarding her jewelry and this necklace in particular, while I’m not sure where Jeanette got this piece, I don’t believe Nelson gifted it to her - it’s not his taste. Sometime in the 1940’s he gifted her with a perfectly matched strand of opera length pearls which she wore frequently - you see it in one of the color magazine adverts she did during that time. Gene gave her a clump like necklace for their 20th anniversary in 1957 - those clumps typically use inferior mismatched pearls which Nelson would never have selected. She did wear Gene’s necklace often after that. Nelson did gift her with many lovely pieces of jewelry including a emerald ring, however, she also purchased jewelry as a “gift to myself”. When she was “engaged” to Bob Richee she bought a diamond ring that she wore on her engagement finger, everyone assume Richee had given it to her but that was not true. Jeanette loved jewelry, she didn’t necessarily care if it was costume or real. But Nelson’s taste was far more fastidious. I hope that helps.

      Nelson gifted that diamond cluster necklace to Jeanette. They were not speaking at this time but Blossom told her that she was going on this show. She knew she was going to see Nelson. She was very nervous. It was like 2 years they hadn't spoke. She felt unattractive and old walked off a set after watching the playback and never called him back or answered him I think she was depressed they couldn't live their normal lives it took a toll on her and them.

      Time has made the sponsors' messages on early TV shows period pieces of considerable historic interest. They have lost their ability to irritate. Besides, the price viewers paid for free commercial programing IMO was much cheaper than the barrage of unrelated and disruptive spot ads which became the financial model as the industry migrated from New York to Hollywood.
      Sponsors felt a responsibility for shows with their names on them. They often tailored them to the tastes of the more elite segments of what was still, in the early Fifties, a minority of Americans which could afford a set. Many YT commenters compare today's tube unfavorably with the sophisticated air of early broadcasts. Technique has progressed, not editorial standards.

    It seems like a concerted effort was made to re-affirm Jeanette and Gene’s marriage, almost to a suspicious degree. The story goes that Nelson and Jeanette fell in love on the set of Rose-Marie and wanted to marry, but that L.B. Mayer forbade it, threatening the two stars with the loss of their MGM contracts. Jeanette was Mayer’s pet; he did permit her to marry, as long as it wasn’t to Nelson Eddy, and a marriage to Gene Raymond was arranged. Allegedly, Raymond was same-sex attracted and sterile, and Jeanette had four pregnancies with Eddy that she was unable to carry to term. See how quickly she sits down after greeting each surprise guest…that’s a means of energy conservation in people with poor heart function.
