interesting your comments regarding your last stop and the plantation. With few exceptions, all of us here in the US, regardless of our skin color, political persuasion, or financial standing absolutely agree that the slavery time in the US was reprehensible. All of us wish it had never taken place, but you cannot change the past. However, we can work together to ensure we do not forget the past, lest we find ourselves repeating it. Brilliant video and thank you so much for your kind words of the people and places you experienced!

We did this cruise on the American Queen in 2016. We embarked in New Orleans and disembarked in Memphis and independently, went on to Nashville. Like yourselves, we have done a lot of cruises but even to date, this is at the top of our list. Being Canadian, we learned so much more than we thought we knew about the Deep South. The history is amazing and the journey that the American Steamboat Company affords you is unbelievable. Your video really touched everything on all levels. It brought back a lot of wonderful memories. Thank you!

We have brown gravy too, and chicken gravy. The white gravy you mentioned is sausage gravy. It's usually served with biscuits and eaten at breakfast, or at other meals with chicken fried steak.

The “gravy” is typically called milk gravy. The addition of sausage makes it, “sausage gravy”. It’s just an American staple. :) Made from a fat (in this case the fat rendered from the cooked crumbled sausage) and then flour is added to the skillet or pan and cooked a bit before the addition of milk and salt and pepper. This simple dish is easy to make but even here in the U.S. people will buy a powdered mix or (I think?!?) even a jar. I suppose there is an art to it…but I grew up eating this…and it’s as you would say, “dead easy to me” to make. It’s a béchamel sauce. You can change the fat to butter and omit the sausage and serve over peas, creamed peas. YUMMY! Or any variety of things. It’s lovely! Also, I’m curious about the, “bread and butter” pudding you mentioned. Was it referred to as just bread pudding on the menu? My mom makes the most wonderful bread pudding with a lemon 🍋 sauce! Most often served with a rum sauce though.
I have tried to look up “iodine plantation” and I do not find anything. Was the plantation you mentioned an indigo plantation? I love to hear the British take on such a deeply southern American trip! I dream of a trip/holiday like this but am afraid it’ll be too cost prohibitive in my lifetime. I would like however, to visit Natchez someday and hopefully you could go there again too, possibly during their famous and historical Pilgrimage. It sounds as if you would enjoy that very much!

I didn't realize we had cruises that screeched from the Missouri River down to New Orleans. It definetly looks like something I would do one day soon. Thanks for the informative videos. It's interesting I had to find out about these cruises from a couple who lives in the UK! I am still smiling about this!

It's true and I think it maybe true of peolle all over the world, we don't value our history as much as visitors do. Very enjoyable video. You could fly into Louisiana and visit so much of Vicksburg, Natchez and St. Francisville and get the whole, “Deep South” experience much, much more affordably. Most of the Deep South centered on the mighty Mississippi for decades and in any city along it, you’re bound to garner a great deal of riverboat history. You would probably experience a fair bit of Mark Twain stuff too. Mr. Twain and the big muddy are inextricably linked in Americana. I recommend NOT going in July or August though, it would be a lot of very hot travel! ❤

As a Southern California bro with Mid Western roots, I was really looking forward to yeh Brits take on the quintessential south. If I visit Europe, I’m seeing the origins and inspirations carried on to my country. But when you come here, you’re seeing the influence from the thousands of years worth of history before that. And that is trippy to me. Maybe it’s all the historic south restoration home channels or wanting to know more about my American heritage that has inspired my quest to explore the south, but I’ve been really interested in Mississippi River boat cruising. In fact, Our Restoration Nation is FROM Natchez. Amazing looking town. And I LOVE our American biscuits. My grandma from Missouri made the absolute best.
It’s been said that the southern accent came about because of HOW humid-hot the south is! They just slowed down their speech. And it became an accent. I can believe it. Even BIG cities in the South and Mid West are low-key c compared to the likes of Los Angeles like what I’m used to.

Love your videos! Your presentation is both succinct and charming, which is a very rare combination! I'd like to comment about the white sauce as you've maybe had it dozens of times, but as a as base for other dishes. It's made with a roux, then cream or milk added as the liquid, instead of adding a meat stock for the liquid as you would for making a brown gravy. In Italy, I've had it as the sauce for white pizzas. It's the the base for alfredo dishes (add parmesan to the sauce, mix with pasta, and bake) and it's the traditional base for many "cream of" soups. Southern food is so good because it's based on French cooking. The entire Mississippi River valley area was French territory until the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which doubled the size of the US at that time. Sorry if you knew that, or picked it up on all those wonderful tours! At any rate, really enjoyed that video. I've always wondered about those steamboat cruises, so thank you!

Fellow Tennessean an your very informative in this clip. The peabody is an iconic place that we cherish here in west Tennessee. There has been a new motel built across from Graceland an lisa marie an Priscilla grace this hotel with a design inspection an seal of approval. Every room in it is exactly like a room in Graceland itself. Even the foyer as you enter is exactly like the foyer in Graceland. Right down to the furniture beds chairs everything. Even dining area is replicate of dining room just on larger scale. Its rather unique in it's on accord. This was great. I live just a day or two’s drive from New Orleans and have thought about doing theAmerican Queen cruise, but, like some of the locals you talked with, it just seems kinda ho hum to us. We prefer Europe, the Med, and a few more exotic places. I am really glad that you both enjoyed it so much. I hope you had a chance to go into Cafe du Monde in New Orleans and try the beignets, they are fantastic.

Natchez is a beautiful town. I drove through there on my way home to Louisiana from Florida. Stopped for lunch at a spot with a great view of the river. I wish I had more time to explore. I only live a few hours from there. I ought to make a weekend trip of it.
I also remember touring the Louisiana State capital building on a school field trip of mine. The tour took us into a hallway behind one of the chambers and the guide pointed out bullet holes from when one of the governors was assassinated back in the 1930's. That castle-looking building was the old state capital before they built that really tall one. We toured that as well and it was pretty neat inside.
Also, I heard that American Cruise Lines bought AQV's fleet, including the American Queen. So, hopefully it will keep sailing. Or paddling, rather.

interesting, I may end up doing this cruise as well someday. 95 (35 C) is hot, especially down there, where it is very humid! 105 F (40 C) is not uncommon here in "Silicon Valley" (part of the "San Francisco Bay Area") in the summer....but it's dry, so your body can sweat to rid itself of heat...that's far more difficult with the greater humidity down there! Well, in both cases, you definitely want AC 🙂 Some Europeans wonder why we use it so much in the USA, well, come here in the summer and you will discover why 🙂
Some parts of the USA are under snow right now, but here in the Bay Area, it was 60 F (15 C) today, and 70 F (21 C) is predicted for Monday. 🙂

Vicksburg was besieged in the middle of the Civil War, as it was the only city on the Mississippi River between the northern river ports and the southern ports which connected to seagoing ships at New Orleans and thence to England. The siege lasted a year before the city fell. Many died. It fell the same week as Gettysburg Pennsylvania, delivering two major defeats to the Confederacy at the same time.
This cut the Confederacy into two parts: Texas, Arkansas isolated west of the Mississippi and Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia in the east. The following year the eastern part was cut in halves at Atlanta and again in the final year in the Carolinas and Virginia.
Should you come again to the US, the national parks at the battlefields are beautiful with very talented and knowledgeable guides. From West to east the parks are Vicksburg, Shiloh, Atlanta, Savannah, then north through Appomattox, Antietam and Gettysburg. Worth a trip. The best months are June and July - it will be hot and humid.
