    Bringing up mental health is perfect. After spending 20 years in active addiction with no real hobbies or purpose I spent 5 months in inpatient rehab and came home and got into reptiles. Now my reptile room is a sanctuary for peace and tranquility with my buds. 2 1/2 years clean and not looking back.

      The term mental health really took off these past few years. I see it as a way to abdicate responsibility for one's own emotions. People speak on their 'mental health' as if it's some foreign thing they contend with and placate. This is not natural or the situation. People contend with the huamn condition, that being their sense of attachment, emotions, and ultimately themselves, or the idea of self which bring about suffering.
      Anyways, the main crux of theis piticular issue is as old as time itself. If you trade freedom for security you will have neither. It is not the goverments place to regulate wildlife. The constitution made it clear that their jurisdiction is only the district of Columbia

    Great topic, my next vid is going to touch on this to a degree. I think the best thing we can do is to really push the educational programs and promote them when we do, this counters the bad press we will undoubtedly get. I have our city's museum contacting me every year to bring our reptiles for educational days and I always push for them to invite the mayor, city council, animal control...anyone that could impact laws so that we can educate them first hand before they are asked to ban our animals.

    This is a very well spoken point. To me, their benefits with depression can not be overstated. I don't think this is the end of our hobby but I do think it will validate the ignorance of snakes specifically, and reptiles in general. It seems like every single time people find out I have constrictors, the first thing they ask is 'you ain scared they'll squeeze you to death?'... followed by 'aren't they poisonous?'... to 'don't they lay beside you to size you up to eat you?' In addition to the large companies you mentioned, I think keepers like Dwight Howard and other highly visible enthusiasts should use their platforms to help correct this stigma.

    I agree with you in this.
    I feel one big thing that was left out that should be regulated was breeding animals with known hereditary issues, like wobbles, missing eyes and blindness. I think it's extremely sad and should be completely avoided.
    For other animals as well, for example pugs that can barely breathe and get sick from sinus issues. These "selected" inbred animals are extremely susceptible to illnesses and all sorts of diseases throughout their lives.

    I think this subject in the US is really difficult. Tons of keepers and breeders are really in favor of complete deregulation, but legitimately, there should be regulation on importing to keep the animals safe. Not to mention that, but there's plenty of bad apples in our bunch (not saying who, but their name rhymes with Rob Flark), that make us all look horrible.

    I don’t know how bad this documentary could present reptile keeping compared to Tiger King. Eric Goode has explained in an interview that he has nothing against people getting a ball python or bearded dragon as a pet as long as they’re well educated on their care, but he absolutely believes big cats and primates aren’t pets. That’s all I’ve been able to collect on his position on reptile keeping.

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The challenge is that it’s not his position that matters. A sensationalized documentary brings incorrect information to the front and starts a snowball where other people start making the regulations

  • @EvanKayExotics

    The best hedge against external regulations is good self regulation...That is true on the personal level, professional level, and for the reptile industry. I didn't realize they were originally filming a reptile documentary, but it makes sense why Tom was in the first scene of tiger king. I'm sure that guy pulled up with a cat, and they were like "that's actually the real story." I think the pros/cons you lay out are right. The reptile hobby has a love hate relationship with attention. We need it and want it, but we are terrified about giving up control of our own narratives. Two things to I try to remember: discretion is the better part of valor and don't be deserving of scrutiny. We are all closer to illegal things and bad actors than we'd like to think. You aren't really anything in the reptile hobby until someone has offered you something illegal. I for one am too pretty for jail.

      Thing is that the rack system is what is normally used for breeders. There is absolutely no way they can house hundreds of their snakes in larger separate enclosures. As long as they are kept clean and healthy they should be fine. Now once they go to their forever homes then a much larger enclosure has to be considered.

    Buddy y’all keeping snakes in drawers is part of the problem, if we want people to see the reptile/exotic keeping community in a better light we also need to actually do better, and care for these animals correctly. Promoting keeping snakes in each systems is not going to make them see this community any better. We need to start normalizing taking care of these animals the best way possible instead of settling for the bare minimum care. I think we should only encourage the use of those systems if absolutely necessary, in reality it’s not much better than a shoe box. Yes it costs a lot to breed, not just money of course, time & space, etcetera, but if you’re willing to spend all of the money on raising those babies and breeding you need to be willing to spend some money on giving them the right husbandry and housing. We can at least do a little better than little drawers with no enrichment.

    I have a snake, I love reptiles, I am deeply invested in animal welfare and the environment (not animal rights, don't come at me for that one). Unfortunately, the reptile hobby does not always jive well with the environmental health or animal welfare. I think that there SHOULD be stricter regulations on reptile keepers. Reasonable regulations, like any other industry. No venomous snakes without licensure and training, no import, export, sale, or purchase of wild caught animals without license and permit, and maybe I do support a state by state white list. Sorry, we shouldn't wait for a species to become an environmental problem before taking action. And you know what, to have even more controversial takes, I would also support a limit on the number of animals any one person could possess legally. And don't even get me started on pet stores good lord. They have no business selling some of the stuff they do

      @@Hi_Im_Akward Yup that is what politicians do. Its the same for any hobby. I am in Canada and what the liberal government did to LEGAL firearms owned by licensed owners is disgusting. We had a couple leaders that were scared of everything and thought hollywood represents reality so everything had to get banned. They didn't even understand the current laws we had on the books and they are supposed to be lawmakers.... which is part of the problem... they just make more and more and more laws refusing to truly understand the laws that are already in place. They were calling semi auto rifles with 5-10 round magazines as "military grade" because they have a black exterior and adjustable stock to better fit people. No more dangerous than a wooden semi auto hunting rifle. They base everything on looks alone and also pay more attention to mass hysteria over the well educated groups of experts. The west in general seems to be in a race with itself to legislate our way into the basement where no one can do anything because it "could" be dangerous if someone that is bad decides that some day they may use something in an illegal manner to harm someone. I hate the concept of bringing EVERYONE down to the lowest common denominator just because a select few are incredibly stupid and irresponsible. That is the kind of stuff that happens in kindergarten classrooms and should not be how countries are run. People that enjoy their respective hobbies need to be more vocal and more forceful, that is a given. I no longer have any reptiles but I certainly hope the community fights back against any unjust sweeping laws/bans. I will throw my hat in the pile in whatever way I can if things get bad.

      I think the benefits outweigh the negatives. There are too many breeders who keep adult ball pythons in racks the size of shoeboxes with no hides, substrate, heat, teeny caps of water, etc. If ball python breeders need to downsize their collections a little, so be it- the market is oversaturated anyways, it'd likely help their businesses. It also protects reptiles from geniune and deliberate cruelty, which they SHOULD BE.

    • @amber-dk5ud
      @amber-dk5ud 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@upstartart I don't think racks are bad, but there is a right and a wrong way to do it. If you believe that a snake should live in a box so small it cannot move, with barely enough water to drink, no heat, no hide, and absolutely nothing to do- you are exactly the problem and why we need to protect these animals. A rack should have all the same fundamentals as a regular enclosure. What makes you think breeding animals deserve to be treated cruelly and pets don't?
      Unfortunately, we are already seeing ball pythons euthanized in mass because people who have no business breeding are popping out 30 clutches a year. Downsizing and reducing how much breeders are breeding would save lives.

    Like you ive been in this hobby since a kid and im a grandpa now. Pictures in the mail and a small community went to kingsnake then Myspace then vlogs and TH-cam. Sensationalism it has become for some and that has hurt worse than anything. Forgetting we are selling living creatures not coffe mugs. I understand, working at the quick e mart sucks right? However those with dollar signs in their eyes and clicks on their brains cause harm. Thats why i stepped out years ago and disappeared. Personal survival issues and the fact that our hobby was slowly loosing its hobby status. I commend the hell out of those that have held strong and done well not to mention true reptile breeders keepers are among the most patient waiting sometimes ten years or more for some projects. However the news and people's opinions are often based on what is wrong and not what is right. So they show the public all the irresponsibility that is occuring and side step the good. Responsible selling and buying most important. Piss you guys off or not you should check out the people you sell to for all want the doggy in the window and not all responsible enough to play the tape all the way through and why important as breeders and sellers of our beloved animals to make sure they can be responsibly cared for by the buyer. Oh i know it would limit sells however once again what is your motives? To care for your animals and find others to do the same or pay your electricity bill? As far as venomous it should be restricted to venom labs period. Yes its your life you hard headed boys and yes its yours to take in your own hands, however its a different story when that ass is dead and your family left without you just because you want to showboat with animals that can kill you. Lifes a choice isnt it? Imports should be banned except for animals needing to be propagated for further survival. Using genetic diversity as an excuse like has always been done is a crap excuse. Reptiles dont get weak from line breeding, they get week because in the wild not all babies survive and yet in captivity most do and not supposed to and pass on weak genes. If imports stopped it may not help pocket books of some but it would sure benefit the animals because then only captive bred would be available and long lists of waiting for certain species however it would separate those that do this for love from those with dollar signs in their eyes. So many of you wanted this to become a Big Thing and now it is and now big problems. You better find solutions or Big Brother will and back to the quick e mart boys! Do a heart check if you got one and if the shoe fits wear it, if not move along and best of luck. 🌹

    To be honest, i think some regulations should change. Particularly in concern to pet stores more than private keepers. I hear so many stories about people rescuing snakes from general pet stores because they were clearly sick and under weight. I think a pet store should be required to care for them properly and keep them properly fed and vet checked to make sure theyre healthy. We shouldn't have to buy snakes from pet stores to rescue them. But i dont think the regilations should apply to people who privately keep snakes as pets as long as they are caring for the snake properly. I do believe you should be able to report animals abuse just as you would do with cats or dogs and should be on site vet checked to ensure that owners are getting falsely accused of mistreating a snake or any animal for that matter. But i dont think pet trade regilations should apply to the average keeper, only pet stores and registered beeeders. And there should be a penalty for breeding unlicensed, with the assumption that one isnt breeding for their private collection. I think the threshold for being a "large scale breeder" should be at around 15 breeding size snakes, less than that can be a private collection but any more and you have to register as a breeder with the intent to make a profit in the private pet trade, including being required to file taxes as a private business. Granted, i know nothing about running a business or thenpet trade in terms of breeding, and it could probably benefit from act breeders input as per limits or thresholds from private collector to official breeder. But i definitely think all breeding for purpose of supplying the private pet trade should be regilated, at least in terms of care and ensuring safe and healthy living conditions. I know most private breeders are going to do this anyways because they arent doing it just for the profit, they do it because they love reptiles and truly care for them regardless of federal regulations. But for the few out there who are essentially running the snake version of a puppy mill with poor conditions and malnourished animals, there should be strict and heavy penalties. As long as they are REASONABLE, i think regulations could use some reworking and enforcing because i dont think REASONABLE regulations are going to negatively effect legit breeders who have a true passion for reptile. I also think regulations should apply to the entire pet trade, not just reptiles.

    I don't know how worried I am, really. There's a lot more people keeping reptiles all over the world, than there are keeping something like a tiger, which is a completely unreasonable animal. Even big reptiles like alligators and retics, are more reasonable than a tiger. I do think they're going to mention smuggling, and they'll likely focus on things like venomous for sure. The idiots causing trouble that we're all familiar with by now. But even then, there are lots of hobbyists and professional keepers who keep venomous and large reptiles, safely and ethically. I don't know anyone who keeps a tiger as a pet ethically. Even registered sanctuaries struggle to meet their base demands. The impact remains to be seen, but I doubt it'll change much, compared to what tiger king did. Most people, even ones who might not like snakes, will probably agree a boa is no tiger.

    Im fine with regulation when it comes to animal welfare, human safety, conservation (smuggling endangered animals or invasive species managment). HOWEVER, usually when these regulations come down the govorning body that makes these decisions do not approach it with any nuance and the ones complaining are usually the louder voice. Its extremely important to be involved with local politics about this. Show up and plead your case, if your an expert you have a responsibility to show up. Clints Reptiles had an excellent recent video on how they changed local regulation and it gives a pretty good inside look at how slanted it can be. Animal rights activists usually have it wrong, they don't have the whole picture, they show a slanted view of things and are almost always backed by extremist orgs like peta.

I have been keeping for 20 years and it wasn't until recent years that i really took this to heart and that's greatly due to Tom crutchfield. Good keepers grow with the science and when things are found to not be beneficial to your animals you should make a change. Ball pythons are crazy over bred as well as things like bearded dragons, boas, sulcata, retics and burms, etc and the rescues are filled to the brim. Most of the big breeders have stepped back as well, the hobby is way over saturated and animals are being harmed bc of it.

    Whilst I agree with you on most things.. such as not being an arse with online videos, being like Jeff etc... perhaps things like minimum cage sizes and more standards will raise the standard for all reptiles in captivity with improved environments. Maybe they could consider exempting breeders from certain aspects but for those that have pets I don't think minimum cage sizes is a bad thing and it might stop people 'collecting' snakes just to say they have got a large number of them.

I bet they'll try to equate it with something like puppy mills. They spend an awful lot of time in tiger King focusing on breeding,caging and tiger cub pictures. I bet the word inbreeding gets thrown around a lot if they start talking about genetics. They'll also probably say it's the commoditization of animals. I love these animals and this hobby. I'm just trying to think of all the angles of attack. The thing that might help in the eyes of the public. Is everyone's known someone with a pet snake or lizard or turtle. The majority of people would not consider that a problem. Maybe that person is a little weird but you know. Even kids in movies have had all these pets. Not so much with big cats.

They got their animals decades ago, some as orphaned calves from ivory poaching, and raised them as family members. An elephant isn't just "an animal", it's another person in the family. And you can't use elephants for things such as rides without the elephant being with you on it. They're trained with love and positive reinforcement. No I think it just came out wrong or how it was edited. I caught that myself as I was watching back.

    How to say u are a 'murican without actually saying it:
    -Ppl will pass laws cuz a documentary, no doubt.
    -Laws will be bad for us.
    I know usa is a 3rd world country with a bit more money but pls if your laws are all bad and made cuz random movies... than you guys should come back to Europe. :D

      Haha. Well technically most of these things were trying to fight are already passed in Europe. Europe is way stricter than the US.

    I hate how ownership is called a hobby... especially coming from people Standing in front of a wall of snakes kept in shoebox sized tupperware... It's kind of disturbing... And then they have the audacity to use words like "collections" these are living animals not a book of fucking stamps.

      I use the word collection but I have big planted enclosures for all my snakes. They are my pets that I hang out with and I love them. I handle most of them but I also have a few hands off display animals.
