Thanks! Jason is a great player, it was fun recording him. I don't think the raised fingerboard effects the tone much, perhaps it gives the notes above the 12th fret more sustain.
HI Pt, Yes exactly a slight elevation helps a little with access above the 12th fret. The tornavoz is permanent made from Carbon fiber. In the past I've used metal but the CF are more open sounding. This is perhaps the first cedar guitar with a tornavoz it works wonders on cedar. Thanks for your kind comments!
Michael Thames' guitar timbre has always seem so unique to me. Listening to this fantastic rendering by Jason I know this is the elusive guitar sound I have been looking for... If I cannot find a used Thames guitar to buy I truly hope that I'll be able to order a short scale from him.
Outstanding! Beautiful sounding guitar -- with a wonderful combination of warmth and clarity Does that guitar have a raised fingerboard? If so, how does that affect the instruments timbre?
Bach again...I just don't feel like working on it for now. Maybe I'll surprise you but I don't play any six string guitar anymore. Why fret basses when you can just hit an open string with your thumb? IMO the Regondi Études are the perfect pieces to expperiment with 13 strings. I actually tried the #1 when I received the second Dresden. Bravo again to you and Jason!
Would that be the result of the player having a more ergonomic access to the upper register? Also, are you using a deep, permanent tornavoz on that guitar? I am impressed with your instruments. Thank you.
Alain, don't give up on the Weiss! I understand though, the need to play other music. It became easy for me to go back and forth between the 13 and 6 string guitars. But I always came back to the Wiess....... maybe some Bach?
Thanks, yes the Oktavia's were modded I got the MJE capsules the same time I got the Oktavia's back, and really preferred the capsules to the Oktavia's.
Wonderful job, Michael. By the way, you use exactly the same gear as Uros Baric, a classical slovenian guitarist who I am very fond of. Please, allow me some questions: (I) I noticed you used the spaced pair technique. So, how far did you put the Oktavas from the guitar? (II) I didn't hear any noise floor at all. Which position did you put gain knob? 12 o' clock? Best wishes. Bernardo Neves.
Hi Bernardo, yes Uros was my inspiration, love the sound he gets. Now I have a pair of Schoeps MK4's. Uros just got a pair as well.... ha! This video was so long ago I really cant remember how far away they were perhaps two feet I think. I had the gain up probably too high. Later I've learned to turn down thew gain more. All the best, Michael
nice, but one little suggestion. if you are going to spend all that money on fancy recording equipment, please take the sock off your arm and buy a real arm sleeve. :) also, way too much REVERB. I wouldn't use reverb... use the acoustics of the room. that is all. good playing, though.
Nice job! Sounds great!!
Beautiful. Instrument and performance.

Great playing and wonderful guitar!
Wonderful!

Great video Michael. It makes me want to put Weiss aside for a little while. Congrats to the player too!
Patrick, thanks you for your kind words I would be happy to make you one!

It's to keep ones skin from damaging the finish.
Such a lovely sound! Were the oktavia's also modded or did you just screw on the MJE capsules?

why does the player have an open sock on his arm?
Βαστώ το το χατίρι σας στη κεφαλή μου φέσι, κι όπου κειά πάω και σταθώ προσέχω μη μου πέσει!
