Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through TH-cam videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

3:04 the drivers have someone in the front seat reading out pacenotes, which is basically a list of all the turns and curves that theyre about to drive through, so the driver can anticipate what to do prior to that turn
From the information I have learned watching Rally and playing video games ( not very well ) , the pacenotes are 1 to 2 corners ahead. This is so as you correctly observed , the driver can set the car up for the upcoming direction of the stage.
they also tell them the speed or corniers how fast to be, its amazing to listen to, a language of there own, like morse code you could say

@@sebastianandersson8093 Honestly, I'm not sure if the relationship between a rally driver and navigator is more analagous to a aircraft pilot and navigator, or a ship's captain and helmsman - with the navigator being the captain in the car.

Not a co-incidence, they do have to aim the car right for the landing. You can also control the pitch of the car a bit in the air, if you brake in mid-air it will bring the nose down. The reason is that the tires have quite a lot of rotational inertia so that if you stop them that energy has to go somewhere. Also, revving the engine will rotate the tires and you can pitch up, but that is far less effective. You also can't be accelerating or decelerating but try to keep the speed constant just before the jump. Finnish drivers have always been quite good at jumping, for obvious reasons: it is fairly easy to jump on our rural roads... I've done it and i ain't for sure a rally driver. I've sat in a passenger seat though and it is WILD... From jumping to sliding with inside front tire over a ditch and jump again... it is a rollercoaster.
I never knew about breaking in the air, to control pitch, but thinking about it, it does make sense!

There is no better place than Finland to learn how to fall in the inside of the next corner. Pace notes help with that.

Esapekka Lappi had a freak rock on the driver side of the windshield in this rally, like one in a billion chance. He also had the roll you saw here and you saw him driving that thrashed car. Sadly, you didn't see *them* in that car or his interviews after the stages, which were fairly legendary.

Thanks bro! The young driver in Toyota almost at the beginning saying "Yahoo" or something funny is Kalle Rovanperä, 21 years (at that time) Finnish driver and the current WRC Rally World Champion 2022, although they still have not finished the season. And Team Toyota won also the "most important" World Championship - car manufacturers WC. Well, to us here in Finland that is not so important, to us fans it is the driver, as long as he/she/what ever is from Finland😁😁😍😍🤩🤩
The French guys have kept you Finns away from the title for quite a while. Took one of us Estonians to spoil there spree first haha.

As a rally driver, the pace notes tell you whats coming up, so yes you set car up before the corner to what is coming after. You work usually two corners behind the notes
in the beginning where oliver solberg was yelling as he was pissed because it was literally the first corner of the stage and he destroyed the car lol. also the team boss wasnt happy... :D

Rally has always seemed like the most skilled motorsport to me. I know they are all different skillsets but seriously these people just fly.
There was a Topgear episode where James May was taught to be "Finnish fast". Worth a watch! Its on TH-cam
Yes! "Captain Slow" from the UK Top Gear was taught the "Scandinavian Flick" by non other than Mika Häkkinen, 2 time F1-World Champion. The first episode on GT season 5 (Grand Tour) is also called "a Scandi Flick" and filmed in Norway, Sweden and Finland.

3:00 Yes he did know before jumping how he had to approach the jump because he and his co-driver had driven the stage at low speed prior and the discussed every aspect of the stage. The co-drive would have taken detailed notes and is calling out something like ' 20 air set quick immediate right 3'. Drivers and co-drivers all develop their own shorthand but yah, hitting that landing at an angle was not by chance. That's why they have a co-driver.
That was a great point about going over a crest and knowing how to position the car for the next turn. That's exactly what the drivers have to do. You need to have 100% confidence in your pacenotes to be able to drive like that.

If you want onboard camera the I recommend "MEEKE onboard Rally Finland 2016 FLAT OUT on Famous OUNINPOHJA stage with JUMPS! Citroën DS3 WRC". Full length onboard video on one of the fastest stages in WRC. Driven on a narrow forest road at full speed. Just fantastic to see and watch.
Even though you have a pilot with you, you are very experienced driver, but there is one thing that has never failed to amaze me. How big and heavy are their balls of steel to be able to literally turn into trees with that speed, and if everything goes according to plan tou made in 0,3 second you will glide just past them. I played lots of dirt rally 2 and in game I can do it, but that is game.

I live in Europe. Pretty much every Country here is having these races common X times a year through various Cities, Hills and Tracks. It is a great weekend spend time to go watch these Rally actions. Recommend.
F1 drivers: "We are the fastest circuit racers in the world."
Rally drivers: "But do you have a pilot's certificate?"
The fastest you mentionet was Kalle Rovanperä, number 69. World champion winner for two years and age is 22 or 23. This is his home rally in Jyväskylä, Finland. Also my hometown ❤😊
So on your comments about 3min 20secs in or so.
For each stage the driver and co-driver get to go out on a low speed 'Reccy' or reconnaissance drive. They will take notes about the route such as terrain, crests & troughs and most importantly the direction and severity of corners. The co-driver writes these up as 'pacing notes' and during the actual rally the co-driver reads these pacing notes to the driver. It's like a shorthand for the route. Getting these pacing notes clear and concise enough and getting the information to the driver at the right time throughout the race is an art in itself.
Great stuff eh mate? You gotta admire the skills of the drivers AND their NAVS.

As a Finn i can say most of us grow up driving like absolute maniacs on the dirt roads its in our blood.

Takes a madman to win this rally. Live on the edge for 3 days hoping nothing breaks. In the rally1 the competition is also crazy. They need to drive on the limit or else the others pass.
POV is impressive... but look up some rally footage where they have a feet camera... Those drivers might look calm, but they are tapdancing faster than lighting and the push their gaspedals with their toes while breaking with their heels... Especially old Group B rally footage is mindboggling crazy!

It'd be great if they had some video of the pedals and steering so you could see them turning as they come over the crest and watch them left foot braking to get the car to pitch on the nose.
Not a coincidence, in rallying, instead of having only one driver at the front and just sending them out , you have a driver and a co-driver. While the driver is actually the driving the co-driver is reading what is called pacenotes to the driver. Pacenotes are SUPER important to the drivers as it tells them were to aim the car for maximizing speed but also in order to not crash the car.

Yes, these cars have new parts all the time, can't have anything break down during a race.
They can replace vital parts within minuttes.
The co-driver gives the driver codes from his notes, which they made earlier on a pretour on the route, thats why the driver know which way his frontwheels should point, when he lands.
That is why co-driver reads notes. It's all in notes. It wasn't just luck that driver started turning before jump.
3:00 He did allready know the route; Because his codriver is telling him exactly how sharp and fast each corner on the route is.
The codrivers are half the equation. Without them they couldn't drive nearly as fast... Imagine being the driver and having to rely on your codriver more than your own eyes; If the codriver tells you to turn left you turn left even though it might look like you should be going straight! :D
Thats why you have a map reader so you take on curves and jumpes perfectly.
The driver gets the credit, but actually the navigator is equally important. It's a team tuned to perfection.
It was no accident/coincidence, they have pace notes that let them know what to expect and align the car accordingly

I was waiting for you to do the Finnish rally!!! It’s driven around the area I live in!!! Not to be biased but it’s one of my favourite rally’s of the year
These guys won the rally champion this year: 1:55 . The Finnish driver Kalle Rovanperä is the youngest driver in the history to win the world championship by being only 22 years old.
As you clearly like rallying, especially in Finland, you should see our local folks really sending it with older two wheel drive cars. Username JPeltsi has some very good compilations about it, you really should check it out! Cheers!

The best part of rally for me is when some crashes and if there are spectators at that part of the road everyone goes and helps turn the car upright.
The WRC is absolutely amazing. They do it in the states as well, check out the ARA.
The Man Drives as fast he can, the Pilot on the right gives the notes what you drive...notes.. left..
it was also funny to drive my -83 corolla in between of those WRC toyotas.. through the town :D its funny how quiet those cars are when they are driving in normal traffic, my old corolla was louder and banging exhaust in between of them XD people was laughing and i liked it XD
They have to know the course and the guy in the passenger seat is the navigator that reads off the courses features to the driver so he knows exactly what to expect before he gets there

The drivers are realy calm ones, but of course they scared like shit...still it's just the car after all, which ultimately guides the final result about the race!

also in 2:15 those sings are meter so that car jumped 50 meters in lenght and was probably driving atleast 170kmh
the placing and direction of the car at all times is not an accident, as others said below. the co driver is reading out turns a head of time so the driver is prepared and knows how to place the car to be ready, and that includes possible jumps and other hazzardous dangers. the only time they make a mistake is when they crash

all the rally driver/copilots do scouting runs making notes so when they do the rally the copilot tells the driver whats comming
rally finland... gravel rally, yet fastest of all wrc rallys. imagine going 110-120mph between trees, theres really no margin for error.
7:55 this Hyundai was fastest car in this rally, because there was Ott Tänak. Winner of the Rally Finland 2022.

The driver does set the car up for what's coming next because the co-driver is telling him what is coming reading out the pace notes

Acctually i prefer reardrive rally.They really get to work and it looks cool.
They have col drivers that have the notes. In for the actual term of room they flick the car back-and-forth Before the turn is called a Pengulum Like on a grandfather.
These cars are awesome, but there is something extra in old group B cars. Audi quattro, lancia delta ... uf ultimate poster cars

If you enjoy the POV of race/rally cars, check out the onboards from GT3 cars at the Nordscheilfe. it's multiclass, with up to nearly 200 cars on track with sometimes 100kmh in the top end speed of the different cars. Imagine doing 270kmh in a Audi r8 gt3 racing a porsche gt3 at night and you both have to navigate around a Dacia Logan
in my thoughts rally finland's best part is Vetomiehet, 2wd classes after WRC cars. there is many rally car made in barn or so.. :D RWD rallycars are most interesting to me, much more satisfying :D

These are typical Finnish B-roads. In the middle of nowhere the speed limit on those is typically 80 km/h, I think I've only tried that on a rental car. These guys max at 200 km/h-ish, with average being close to 130

The drivers dont know the roads, they rely on the navigators and him reading out loud his road notes. Usually coded for shortness, telling the driver which way the bend is, speed camber or hill, if listen you can hear him calling out to the driver.
They have a pace note that the navigator read along the stages
These gravel tires look a lot like Bf Goodrich`s all terrain tires. With just a bit more complex groove pattern`s on these tho.

Took his 3rd Finland victory. One of the most intense battles. Proud to be a Estonian at the moment he scored the win.
as a codriver and driver for many (35) years , these lads and lasses are paid to do this and as such are driving in the cars practicing day in day out, seeing how the car reacts on different surfaces , its almost like a ballet stringing everything together, the relationship between navigator and driver is more intense than pilot and copilot (done that one too), its more like a marriage in agood pairing you can interpret what each other wants, how fast you read the notes or whether you have to repeat it, we have often crashed and i as the navi hasnt realised until all is quiet, at 7:20 you look at the tree i can tell you he isnt that moment has gone, his notes would of said dont cut whats there is irrelevant to him, he just knows not to cut, at that speed if hes off line and hits it there aint nothing he can do other than brace, but truth be known he wouldnt know what he hit until playing back the onboard footage. You can control the driver by slowing down how fast you give the notes(pacenotes) our notes also tell us if the junctions or turns are to be strung together so you here the navi read several at a time that means one follows immediatly after the other, notes depending how the driver wants and can understand them can be 1 to 9 or 9 to 1 so 1 can be tight 9 open and fast or the other way around and you can have descriptive ie fast medium right but this at that speed would take too long , loving the vids keep it up

Those jumps are not accidental when you heard hyppy vasen laita that means jump left side so they know where to aim and they can control car mid air littlebit like those pacenotes are so important becouse car driver lives about 3 sec ahead if pacenote reader fails then the car is on tree for sure
