I am in the practice of listening to your backing tracks while my mind is occupied with work tasks at my 8-5 job. I find my mind is more open to musical discovery when I am not 100% focused creating and playing simultaneously. My mind creates the solo, then when all go home, I plug in and play what my mind has already created. (I will sometimes even use my phone and sing/hum the solo so I don't lose the idea). It is a fulfilling endeavor as I don't have to think of the solo, as I have already pondered the path I will take. When I listen to the backing track and apply thought to the solo without my guitar, my mind is open to new musical avenues.

I use a similar technique, sometimes but not always...great method, I need to do it more often, but when I finally have time to grab my axe at the end of the day, I just pick it up and jump in, which is the opposite of what you described
