      As a nation we wasted decades on the aristocrat spectator sport known as tennis. Tennis has done very little to the physical fitness of the mass. Here is a fun game that can improve the health of the nation.

    Please don't let Joan Pritchard's contribution to the game go unrecognized. In 1965 when the game was invented Joan came up with the name “pickle ball” -a reference to the thrown-together leftover non-starters in the “pickle boat” of crew races. The dog story was invented in 1968 by a newspaper journalist because he thought naming the game after the dog was a better story. However, Pickles, the dog, was born three years after the game had been named.

    • @anthonyriche552

      That's an awesome backstory. Joan's name should definitely be part of the founding story.

      I think it's because it's a lot lot lot easier than regular tennis. Tennis is a very demanding sport technically just to hit the ball over the net requires skill without going into rallies and games, this looks a lot easier. I'd say with the amount of tennis courts in the US people should play pop tennis

Not everyone can or wants to play tennis (at any level). And complaining about kids playing and [gasp] never taking up tennis? Are you the same people who bemoan kids on their phones all the time? At least they're being active. Why does it matter to you that some people enjoy a different way of getting outside, and being active and social? I used to play tennis all the time, but I've recently become partially disabled. I have heard of pickleball and maybe that's an option for me... seems fun. L.A. where I live is totally Pickleball ignorant. The first government official (mayors, council members, supervisors, etc) who will take PB seriously and start building courts will be a sure winner in an election.

    If the story of naming the game after a dog named Pickles is wrong, I don't wanna be right!
    Let's just make this part of the pickleball origin myth, like Washington and the cherry tree.

    It is great for senior citizens. It is like tennis-Ping pong. Of course, nothing beats like the sound of the tennis ball. Still playing tennis at 70 years albeit slower.

    It is part of our unfortunate tendency to rank things and have to compete in everything that a fun backyard sport has become yet another competitive slog shutting out the uncoordinated.

    I hate that tennis courts are being taken over for this. Yet, I’m going to now go find a dedicated court to play.

      It’s because nobody is playing tennis. Why let the courts sit empty

    • @CoachJJ
      @CoachJJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beanie0026 nobody plays tennis all the time, that is. It’s always been a weekend sport for any that aren’t using a paid club to play. If a court is truly unused and crappy, take it over by all means, but I do like how some places create a separate pickle ball court all together
