I've been to many lakes in my life, in many states, but my instant favorite is Watauga. I feel like I'm transported back in time to my youth.

The very first part is Wilbur reservoir. It comes out of the bottom of Watauga lake. And is very, very cold. You can go there in the summer when its sunny and 95 degrees and that water will be in the high 40s.
At the bottom of Wilbur dam is the headwaters of the Tennessee side of the Watauga river. Because the water is so cold it is one of the best trout fisheries in the South. There are some monster rainbow and brown trout in the river as well as some striper bass that are 3 and 4 feet long.
If you fish Watauga lake it has a great abundance of smallmouth bass. Again due to the cold waters you will be hard pressed to find better smallmouth fishing in the South.

What road are you traveling along? I am from Texas but wanting to maybe move your way. Trying to get to know the area and sell my husband on the idea.

Mostly it is Wilbur Dam Rd. You take Hwy 91 out of Elizabethton & there are signs. Come and join us!
