(ENTP) Thoughtful gifts like that... are pretty much never going to be something I keep. I can relate on enjoying something new though. I do recall a few gifts that are precious to me... don't even have them anymore but I can still tell you exactly who got it for me, when I received it, and I will always remember the gift though. On the other hand, gift giving for me is VERY easy. I will tell people what I want in the price range they request, and I do still take the time to inform them how much I enjoy it even if it seems like the gift was a flop.

One year for Christmas my ISTP husband gave me (INFJ) a gigantic whiteboard. I was utterly perplexed. He said he thought it would help me with my sewing. I'm not even joking. The weirdest thing is that it HAS actually helped me with my sewing. I can use magnets to put a bunch of fabrics together to see how they look, while also making notes on the fly (like measurements, projects, and lists of fabrics I need to buy).
For my birthday one year, I told him I'd love to have some flowers. He brought me a bunch of potted plants. I was like, "What is happening?" He said he thought it made more sense to buy plants that would give me flowers year after year instead of a bouquet that would last a week. Again, he was right.

As an INFJ, what gets most under my skin is when someone gives me a gift THEY think is cool, completely oblivious to the fact that I’m not into the same stuff THEY are. What means the most is when I receive a gift that the giver may not like or even understand , but they went for it anyway because they know it’s something I like or am into. So yeah, I’d say that’s a flavor of “it’s the thought that counts”.
That said, my wife and I don’t even usually exchange gifts anymore. It’s neither of our love languages and we’re both just as happy deciding to spend a little extra cash on ourselves when an occasion comes up, and instead celebrate together with a date, trip, or a special meal instead of a purchased item.
