As a long time larper and mid-time airsofter, I can confirm that folks are missing out by not embracing the roleplaying

Having fun with the ridiclious aspects is what makes a good airsoft milsim great.
Like having a superstitiuon to always do a "warriors dance" before undertaking a mission in the airsoft game.

My first LARP-y Milsim, I decided to go as a goat herder, and would wonder around being annoyed at the bluefor troops for being in my way. By the end of day 1, they stopped searching me - which came in very handy when it came to snuggling across checkpoints. A great weekend,

Wolf cola is for bodyguards and by bodyguards, it's also the only energy drink with the power of a crow.
Airsoft is the modern version of civil war reenactment.

Ilm almost 50 YO and I’ve been playing Airsoft for 5 years. I played paintball when I was younger and add more fare share of DND and other pen and papers games. I’m part of La Compagnie des Griffons Blancs (White Gryphons Company) here in Québec and we focus on the role play element in our games. We have NPC’s, Tactical Force (the good guys), Op-Force (the bad guys) and something civilians. The games are missions oriented. We use comms, drones, vehicles and props. When I play as Op-Force I wear black with an AK and I use an accent, I swear and I « insult » the Tactical Force, all in the spirit of the role play! It’s so much fun this way and more immersive! Keep on larping!!!

Iv been going to REV events for a few years now. Airsoft in a roleplay setting can be such a cool combo when done right. Its cool to see more games with larpy mechanics jump into the scene! Be a nerd, have fun!

I love that you brought this up. I don't get to go too many role-playing events where I live and some people just don't get it.
They end up ruining the events treating them just like normal skirmish but when it all falls together, nothing is better.

The issue Ive run into is that more time is spent on the "story" and less on the mechanics of the game and making sure its actually fun.

I used to think role playing in airsoft was kind of cringy, but after starting a dnd campaign with some friends a couple years ago it may just be the fresh take on airsoft i need.

I think Airsoft as a competitive sport is not inherently wrong, but a honor based, trust based competitive sport is a short track to arguments and disagreements. We dont have markers like Paintball, and the BB's and ranges are at a different scale. Airsoft I think excels when used as a foundation for LARPing. Its glorified cowboys and indians.
Ballahack Revelations and The Wild I think are the best formats of this. Ive gone entire Revelations games without firing a single BB, just following the story lines, or helping people. It is first a LARP, second, a airsoft game.

honestly I think milsims kinda falls under that category as well while roleplaying isn't the main part you're still building out a kit/cosplay and pretending to be on that faction

I've LARPed in multiple states (PA, NY, DE, MD, NJ, VA). While there are similarities, there's also differences. These differences led me to leave that community completely, and stick to airsoft. I cringe when people compare the two.
