I just got the Kevin Gray version, reissued vinyl. It was an upgrade from a first edition US version. Holy crap, the improvement was instantly apparent! Been listening to this classic album for over 20 years and now I'm hearing new things!

I recently compared that Kevin Gray cut (the 2016 reissue, which was pretty inexpensive) to the Steven Wilson mix (cut by Chris Bellman). The KG cut is fantastic. I can't imagine what how good this one-step vinyl sounds.

Great stuff, Ron. I really enjoyed how you talked about adjusting the VTA, which effects the SRA, causing more of an emotional response to the music. After yesterday’s great chat you and Patrick had, I messed around with adjusting my VTA a lot last night, and it’s so true. Before that, I only made sure my tonearm was level, but bringing it back a speck can work wonders. Thanks, man!

Hi Ron, great video! When you mention cutting lacquers for both the one step and normal father-mother process, my educated guess is that these companies like MoFi are likely only able to secure rights for very specific release types and numbers. These big labels are pretty strict about letting other companies get a hold of their masters, and often companies like AP or MoFi are limited to a specific pressing run, or in many cases 45rpm only, so that later the big label can do their own release more cheaply. I seem to remember watching an interview with Chad Kassem that alluded to this.

Hey Ron, not sure if you are aware but there was a pressing of Fragile that came out back in 2016 that was done by Rhino/Atlantic which was mastered by Kevin Gray from the analog tapes, not to be confused with the AcousTech pressing from the early 2000s with Steve Hoffman. That was priced at around $16, which is a steal for an audiophile release. If you ever come across a copy I’d love to hear your overall thoughts on it. I have that and a Steven Wilson remix and the original version sounds so spectacular.

    • @RocknRonni
      @RocknRonni  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@andyrobinson2653 hello Andy I do think the one step is a little bit better and been thinking about it I think the quieter vinyl has a lot to do with that. when you consider the price I paid $125 for mine if I have to start spending $200 versus $50 I'm going to spend $50 it's not worth that extra money.
That's why I haven't been buying a lot of these new Mofi reissues and analog Productions reissues, because I already have a very good reissued copy by Kevin Gray or Bernie and I don't need to spend another $100 on something else for just that little bit better. If I'm starting out from just a reissue or an OG pressing and I want to get better sound, then yes. I will buy the new remaster from acoustic sounds.

I extracted the original mix 96/24 from the bluray and compared to the Ultradisc FWIW. The differences are so subtle and minor that I'm not going to claim any differences other than fade points. The Ultradisc has some goofy fade timings. The Bluray has them much closer to the record. That's about the only "better" declaration I can make.

Agree, the one step slays. I have an original or close to it, The Kevin Gray version, and the boxset version from Steve Wilson and the one step rules them. I will not purchase Friday music pressings as they will not detail sources or answer questions. I wanted Closer To Home by Grand Funk but Friday would not provide source information so I passed.

    Hi Ron,
How are you my friend? Hope you and the family are doing well and keeping safe.
Another fantastic video. ..being a huge Yes fan..I was very interested in this video. Especially since I collect a lot of variations of Yes albums. I remember when this version was announced. .I wanted to purchase it but it was a little out of my price range. ..it's nice to hear your thoughts on it ...in case I get a chance to buy one.
But I do want to say that one of your other commentors ..I believe it was The Record Spinner. .mentioned another pressing that was released by Rhino Records in 2016 that was mastered by Kevin Grey at Coherent Audio. That pressing sounds fantastic and was also cut from the original master tapes. That is my go to pressing...and I have a lot of different variations of that album including a beautiful UK 1st pressing. You might want to get a copy of that Kevin Grey version for comparison. ..it's not very expensive last time I looked.
Once again. .excellent work my friend. .take care and I look forward to your next video.

Well if all they ever get is a Pat on the back why would they change? but if more people complain about it we have hope. I agree with everything you're saying all they ever do is sell out and go up in price so there's no need to change but they do have a problem with that seem splitting that needs to be fixed because Music direct must be getting some of these record back because of that poor packaging. I'd like to know what you think of the production on 2 Judas Priest albums. 1. Point of Entry. 2. Screaming for Vengeance. Not saying you have to buy the vinyl. You could just stream them. Some fans say the sound on Screaming is too rounded or echoey. Like it was recorded in a racketball court. I can see their point. I think Point of Entry is their best production sound. Both albums were produced by Tom Allom.

It is beautiful, but I already own about 5 of these one steps. I don't open them.
Mo Fi tends to boost high and low end frequencies on their pressings, I’ve noticed that, however, my cartridge just may sound a bit brightly detailed in the high end. Oracle Origine MK 11 turntable with Ortofon Black. I need to possibly upgrade the cartridge to a warmer sounding cartridge. Still I don’t have a lot of hours on the cart, so I’m hopeful that it will neutralize eventually.

I've enjoyed getting your opinion on version comparisons. I think a lot of it has to do with the system we are each listening on, and as you pointed out in this video, how important setup can be. My system isn't particularly high end, but compared to most people it is off the charts LOL. But in general I find Japanese pressing to be better vinyl, but very very bright and often way to bright. They also lack bass. Obviously this is a generalization. My "muddiness" on my US first press can be strictly to vinyl lottery. It's like there is some subtle distortion around 800hz to 900hz area that kind of veils the upper mids. Which is of course the part we "hear" as sweet. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to do these videos.

I don't have any version of Fragile. I do have the Friday music box. I think that in my old age I have finally started losing some of the higher frequencies and I wonder If its still worth it for those really hi end sets for me ? I'm surprised that's its still available. I think the economic devastation being caused by the corona virus is going to have quite a negative effect on the record business ? I really enjoy these videos. Keep them coming.

Richard you've got so many records that you haven't even listen to you need to start listening instead of buying these expensive records like you said you're correct start enjoying your music that you haven't listened to Instead of buying new stuff For a while Big Brother.
You got so many records there a must be a few in there that you are gonna say I don't know why I bought this one, put them in a Box, bring them down to the record store for trade.
that's a good way to spend your money CHEERS!!!!

Oh my goodness. Little girls all around the world are crying over their Crosley turntables as we speak. And then the bad Audiophile man had to bring up father and mother. 8-)
I totally agree... about the fathers and mothers. I am continuously mystified that labels put so much time and effort into a remaster; and then create such a limited pressing from it. This is a sin, in my estimation. The deliberate manufacture of artificial scarcity in the music market is a crime against nature.

you would think mofi would automatically use the clarity vinyl in all the records they make just to have the best sound they can make so on there regular records they are now settling for second best quality the price of vinyl can not be that much,i also wish they would at least put a plastic bag of some sort around the one step box to save the outside cover from wear as we all know box sets over time always show wear and tear

MoFi pressings I've discovered are very hit and miss, sometimes original first pressings sound superior.
