    I've had a brake service on my schedule for the last 6 months, though it's been a chore trying to vibe a warm day with having an able body occur at the same time. I've had good luck with Akebono pads, though I'm not hotlapping the truck, the mileage would speak otherwise. 😁

      So the Alcon has only a 355mm one-piece rotor which the same size as stock and is much smaller than the TRD kit 405mm one-piece rotor kit and this 410mm two-piece rotor so although it is probably good for 17" wheels, it isn't any bigger than the stock brakes. The main advantage would be more pad volume for longer life, but it would be marginally better for fade resistance and stopping torque. It's also some weird cheap cast iron caliper, not Alcons racing-type alloy forging.

    I haul a 27’ camper every other weekend and I’ve been wanting to fix the brakes. The only complaint I have with my Tundra is the brakes! Great video thank you! What are those wheel specs? They look rad!

      20x9.5 zero offset. 305/55-20 tire. You need to trim the front frame rails at the rear of the wheelwell, a common Turnda mod.

    Alcon actually makes a front and rear kit for our tundras and they fit in a 17” wheel. We’ve been running them for sometime and they’re amazing. 6piston front and 4 piston rear along with thicker larger rotors

      So the Alcon has only a 355mm one-piece rotor which is a lot smaller than the TRD kit 405mm one-piece rotor kit and this kit's 410mm rotor so although it is probably good for 17" wheels, the thickness of the Alcon rotor is 35mm, identical to the Fig's rotor and 4mm thicker than stock which helps thermal mass. The Alcon rotor isn't any bigger in diameter than the stock brakes. It, like the TRD kit, is subjected to all the drawbacks of the one-piece rotors we discussed in the video. The main advantage would be more pad volume for longer life and more thermal mass for a little more fade resistance but stopping torque it would only be marginally better and any gains you are getting are mostly through the pad compound. It's also some weird heavy cast iron caliper, not a racing-type alloy forging. So I would say from a stopping power, fade and life standpoint, its performance is going to be a lot worse and it's only main advantage is fitting under 17" wheels.

      Well there’s more to rotor diameter. The rotor density also is significantly larger. These are designed for heavier armored vehicles. You’re running a stock rear caliper the Alcon comes with a 4 piston and larger rotor. All this combined would out perform both the TRD and your current one you showcased.

      No, it would not for the engineering reasons stated. 80% of the braking is done by the front. The density of iron and Young's modulus are identical for iron no matter what its alloy. The Alcon rotors appear to be non-performance one-piece OEM replacement style rotors, the same size as stock while the Figs rotors are racing-grade rotors made from heat-treated, high carbon and molybdenum iron alloy that is heat and abrasion resistant. The torque generated by the bigger front rotor is much more. The pad volume is even higher, the thermal mass is much greater, and the swept area is much more. The front Alcon calipers are some weird cast iron heavy parts, not their racing parts. The Figs rotor and caliper are much lighter due to the 6061 Aluminum alloy parts with less rotating and unsprung weight. The only advantage the Alcon system has is that it can fit smaller wheels. The rear brakes are bigger with a 370mm rotor vs 345mm with more pad volume due to a larger 4-piston caliper which again, like the front is an odd OEM-style iron one. Pretty sure a 370mm rotor won't fit under a 17" wheel as well. But rear brakes don't matter that much, I hope the Alcon actually engineered this lash-up as the Tundra has both ABS, electronic proportioning, and stability control so the piston areas must be considered in the design of the kit. The kit doesn't use any of Alcon's racing-grade components and appears but be some sort of branded lower-quality stuff. As I said the kit's main advantage is larger pad volume which mostly affects the life of the system. If you are running 17" wheels there is only so much you can do. It will not outperform this kit or the TRD kit from a braking performance standpoint. These are engineering reasons why.

      The rear does fit in a 17” wheel no issues. I would disagree that this kit wouldn’t outperform. Doing a front kit alone isn’t the whole package. I would love to see the Alcon front and rear up against yours in back to back tests.

      The Alcon kit doesnt have a chance, all other things like pad compound, suspension setting and tires being equal. It's physics and engineering. However you have to understand that it was not designed to go head to head with this kit or the TRD kit and it's not fair to compare it to them, it was designed to work with 17" wheels and those other brakes probably won't even fit under 18" wheels. Alcon could do a very good kit for the larger wheels but that limits potential sales and ignores a lot of the offroad and overlanding market. If I was building a 17" wheel more dirt biased truck I would use the Alcon kit as it is better than anything else in that space.

    Great video! Any warping on the new StopTech rotors? I just ordered a pair of cryo treated slotted StopTech rotors. Sick and tired of OEM rotors warping on me.

    Pardon the derail. You mentioned the TRD powder coat has begun peeling. What paint/coatings work well for wheels? I need a few sets refinished and I was going to go with powder coat. Thanks!

      Hard anodizing, powder coat will get messed up too, turns brown. I think if you get some heat resistant paint for calipers

    What size rims? The 1st tundra ran a 6 inch rim and didn't allow for alot of upgrades due to space restriction.

    StopTech couldn't fix you guys up with a drop-in floating rotor?
    The new caliper doesn't have a bolt-in bridge feature. It can't help but lose stiffness with so much open area. Comparing radial mount vs axial mount when you still have reaction force coming from the same ultimate mounting location on the knuckle with the abutment bracket is kind of a moot point.
    The biggest gains you'll get for perceived caliper stiffness is from minimizing the piston diameters. If the new caliper has smaller pistons for a larger diameter rotor, you'll get a better feeling pedal.

      The adaptor bracket is much stiffer than the ears by an order of magnitude, it is a block of material that spans the length of the caliper vs, well ears, Probably stiffer than making radial mounts on the knuckle, so most of the mounting force is closer to the pad axis with the radial mount. Also in talking to ex Stoptech Engineers after reviewing the caliper in FEA, the ST60 was designed pre FEA at least for them, the bridge did not contribute too much for stiffness. As far as piston area it is about identical. Stoptech got bought out by private equity and was gutted out so no more getting anything special from them. It is hard enough just to get kits and service parts.

    Does Toyota just suck at engineering brakes? The same issue happened to my tacoma. I have a friend that had the same issue with his 4runner too. I ended up replacing my rotors and calipers to a "upgraded" caliper, rebuilt but with better internals, and slotted rotors. The first time I replacet the rotors and pads, it started to warp and shake again after about 15k. This was just from daily driving too. It's a tacoma so I don't tow anything.

      TEI racing is a Chinese knockoff brake that is a copy of a Brembo monoloc. It doesnt even look anything like RB calipers and the rotor is smaller. RB's are made in Fullerton. CA and the rest of the parts are made by Figs Engineering in CO. Come on if you are going to talk crap get it right!
