I live in the Netherlands where we have more bikes than people and I have never encountered it being done like this. The seller just kinda guesses what your size is and you get to take it for a test ride. Nothing fancy and unnecessary like this...

I don't think the measures done were "unnecessary", as a matter of fact, it'll probably be the same as what they do in other bike shop when you choose a bike, they'll ask you to mount on it, adjust your sitting height, ask how the seat feels etc. The only difference with how they do it in this shop is technology is incorporated with the actual adjustments while riding the bike itself & the test ride
