    There are few on the Tube that share any relevance about 1911's. After getting a severe case of 1911osis, I find myself searching for quality information. Some products I agree are no longer available, however I find there is something to be picked up from 10 year old information. Thats just a blip in time on this over 100 year old design. I can count on one hand the individuals that deliver. You're in the top 3. Thanks for the hard work.

    Barstock still counts as forged if anyone was wondering the differences. Its forged/rolled into its shape, so it has similar grain structure. As long as it isnt heated for prolonged periods after being rolled, then very minimal grain growth, if any, will take place.

    Great advice. I just sent my Colt 1991 A1 Commander in to Nighthawk Custom for a "pistol upgrade package." I am also having them do a trigger job, and "ultra high undercut trigger guard." Can't wait to get it back. I also ordered a Thunder Ranch Combat Special in .45 cap.

    What do you think of Springfield TRP in .45?. I’ve had experience with bullseye 1911s and really enjoyed those. My expected use is range and Concealed and do not plan to wrench on the gun beyond what’s needed to keep it working. Also are there any books you suggest or are your DVDs the best foundation?

    Has there been a 1911 with an external extractor that operates on par with a well tuned internal extractor? The Sig blasters' extractors seem to be very low in relation to where an internal extractor grabs the case.

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, because the geometry of the slide and ejection port limit where you can put the external extractor and they all tend to sit too high, causing the rim to slip most of the way off the claw when the barrel links down. The concept is correct, the execution usually tends to be lacking. I have not tried the current Sigs and have no plans to do so, but I'm familiar with their original design.

    Hilton question for you. The short comings of the 1911 have are continuing to be eliminated through small design changes, (examples include; larger safety, contoured beaver tail, better sights, mag wells, etc.), however one short coming I hear about commonly is loose plunger tubes. I see this as one of the only short comings left in this design, do you have any advice for fixing the plunger tube issues other than simply buying a bar stock plunger tube and proper staking? Thanks

    • @John1911
      @John1911 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Parsons back in the old days, there was a 4 stake plunger you could use. The other option was a frame with a integral tube machined into it. -Marky

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Grips which support the plunger tube, properly Loctited and staked bar stock plunger tube, basically mitigate the issue. The MIM factory units and poor staking jobs are the heart of the problem, as well as thin profile grips which leave the tube unsupported.

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      graynote Caspian and Ruger have those and the frames are cast. Refer to video on that. STI 2011 has a different setup which eliminates the plunger tube from the design, and that is a substantial tunnel in a bar stock frame, those work fine.

  • @roraev9296

    Any recommendations on ammo/bullet selection? We all realize that the ammo must function in our individual guns, but any pointers on things like bullet profile, and overall cartridge length? I understand there are variables, but some ammo/bullets seem to cycle better than others, and there have to be reasons for this.

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bullet profile and OAL which approximates GI 230gr ball has the highest tendency to work well in a 1911. Shorter rounds with flat/wide noses tend to fare poorly. Rounds with sharp and flat JHP profiles like Hydra Shok tend to feed very poorly.

    With MIM parts so common, what parts are no big deal if MIM?
    What parts should never be MIM?

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'll be tackling this in great detail in a future video, it's a popular topic. Shortest answer for here: MIM/Cast will do for hobby/recreational guns where round count is low as the parts may not last very long. The only part where you can generally get away with MIM for a long service cycle is a grip safety.

    Is the debate over 7 vs 8 round magazines still viable or a dead issue when it comes to reliability for 45 cal 1911s ?

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't know there still was a debate. I feel it's a long moot issue with the maturation of service oriented 8 round magazines. You might also want to watch: th-cam.com/video/YGBc9XW-wOE/w-d-xo.html

    I know on your website you no longer recommend the Surefire mr-07 rail adapter but do not give any insight as to why. I’m inquiring because I currently use it on my 1911. Is it really a no go?

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main reason is that it's 15 yr old tech, prior to widespread availability of rail frame 1911s, which are hands down a better choice now for light and holster compatibility as well mechanical function. The system was prone to having the slide stop pin walk out and binding the gun, as well as failing to lock back. The slide stop pin is not meant to be load bearing, it has other work to do. If you have extensively test fired your gun with it in place and it works, then have at it.

    • @nicholaspreble1427
      @nicholaspreble1427 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      108Performance funny you should mention the pin walking out. While racking the slide I have noticed the pin walk out about an 1/16th or so but in 3 1911s ( s&w pd1911, colt mk4 , Springfield 1911) I’ve never had a problem with lock up. That being said the fact that the slide stop is MIM always worried me. I guess the reason I tracked one down is the fact that they are rare and having the ability to throw a rail on for a light ( depending on work ) had its advantages. Is there anything I should watch for aside from pin walking out ?

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nicholaspreble1427 well..other than the gun not working...just watch it closely. If you still own all 3 of those guns, I'd highly recommend selling 2 and getting a railed 1911 instead.

    howdy Hilton...... I am still single stack .45 Operator on the same piece you put your file on my extractor (2012). For those DieHard single stackers...... down the road will you provide options for duty RDS (preferably RMR/Holosun) with an emphasis in making sure they fit in any level 2+ duty holster options that you know of. I am aware that duty holsters for 2011 DUO are very thin or still on the drawing board. thanks in advance.

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mike Hernandez RDS holsters for single stack 1911s are going to be exponentially thinner in options than current 2011 offerings, unfortunately. STI’s presence in the LE market is what is driving RDS 2011 holsters, and with no unified market presence of a RDS equipped single stack, no makers will likely spend the tens of thousands of dollars required to tool up. Probably the more likely route is to try a 1911 in the pending 2011 RDS rigs.

    I was left a Colt Officer's Model Lightweight as a gift and have been told that I should not fire 230 gr ball from this gun. Is there any truth to that and could you explain why? Thanks so
    much and enjoy your site immensely!

    • @108Performance
      @108Performance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lightweight has an aluminum frame and candidly it's not that fun to shoot with 230 ball. However, you are unlikely to shoot 20k rounds of 230 ball through it, so I wouldn't sweat any wear issues.

  • @thespaminator
    @thespaminator ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question regarding the firing pin safety. For a 1911 without a firing pin safety: If the sear that holds the hammer back breaks, what stops the hammer from falling on a live cartridge? Will it fall to half cock and stop? Will it bypass the half cock position because there is no sear to engage it? I know this is highly unlikely but what if? It’s just a thought I’ve had about my personal 1911.

Consider any other format to transfer your DVD into for sale? ie Flash Drive video or online video download. Would love to get it. Can’t believe I just recently came across your channel. FYI, Springfield no longer sells Range officer/RO operator(as I ordered a RO 2 years ago for competition only to be told 8 months later discontinued). I ordered the bells and whistles RO “Loaded” version which took another 6 months and upon receipt from my FFL Springfield discontinued it due to introduction of “Garrison”’and P35(Browning Hi-Power knock off). Springfield just cutting corners/costs renaming 1911s as I think Garrison/RO/Loaded all the same frame, slide and match grade barrel.
