The actor that's currently in the darkroom his acting is unexplainably fantastic going through the psychological changes that he's experiencing he's adapting to continue a conversation with a little mouse just to keep his own sanity. When the mouse left he was ultimately all alone and that's when the decline started to happen.. And now he just doesn't care...
This play is exceptionally good, and thank you for display because
    I am immensely enjoying it

I forget which episode we were listening to, but it had news before the actual show. My mom came in during the middle of the broadcast and started going off because she thought it was a live broadcast! I calmly told her that was a really old show and the broadcast was on Watergate. Lol, wonderful morning, amazing show, thanks for uploading these!!

I love this show and when the commercials are left in its even better. those are some classic commercials and a time capsule for the ears.

I've been listening to these with rapt attention since I was about 9 or 10, primarily toward the end of the 1970s. This is perhaps the best episode I've heard. It is certainly the most meaningful. Elspeth Eric, the author, deserved a Peabody for this. Looking her up, I see that this story was included in the paperback anthology of three "CBS Radio Mystery Theater" stories published by Popular Press.

When I was buying these on cassette I always looked for ones that had the news at the beginning or end. I actually had a knee jerk reaction when the former President bulletin came on. Thinking G.W. Bush had a problem.
Thanks for another hour of entertainment!

I'm right there with you fiona, this is the most chilling episode I have yet encountered. I think it's the reality of it that makes it so disturbing. Toward the end I was fantasizing about our protagonist somehow clawing his way through the wall where the mouse hole was and escaping into the light. Or perhaps strangling Mr. K to death and hunting down Mr. Z and knocking him unconscious. Mr. Z awakes locked in the black room to find his only companion to be the cooling corpse of Mr. K. I'm glad that the writers didn't indulge in such lurid fantasy. As is it retains an aura of mystery.

This was a most excellent episode on a scale of 1-10 this one rates a 9.6. Unfortunately there is a little Distortion in the tape. Particularly noticeable during the musical sessions

At one point,,, he had no idea and neither did I or anyone else that listen to display had no idea he was ever going to get out of the black room. During the play When the two men were talking as he was in The Black Room they gave no intentions that he was going to be released.
And now they have the gall to ask him to speak in front of the membership,, now yes I would speak in front of the membership and then file charges against them for what they did to him unless she was home of the entire plan beforehand. And if that was so we were not informed that.. I wonder if he's going to talk about his friend the mouse the little tiny companion that he had in the dark..
The writer of this play was extremely creative,,, putting man in a pitch-black dark room and the sit on the floor and entirely little rodent it's saved him from losing his sanity this was an exceptionally different kind play...... Let's see what he has to say to the membership of this club I'll probably psychological doctors ? Or will he just reach over and ring the guy's neck for what he put him through ? And then just snap and lose his sanity ?
We will just have to wait and see ?
Well let's get back to the play and then we will find out !!!
Oh before I forget thank you for this very strange play !!!

I just woke up from a nightmare about my mother strangling me (the last story was about possession) only to switch over to this story which I've also had nightmares about.
He's lucky to have a rat! ...mouse, this is much better than my nightmares, there are other beings, food, walls, a floor, and the possibility of getting out.

The advertising council was as radically progressive back then as they are today..Donate to the college, (indoctrination center), of your choice because young minds, 17-25 are very malleable..
