Love your Ariocarpus collection. Thanks for including the plant and pot sellers in your description. I will check them out. Thanks Jenny and hello Cookie 🐈⬛ says my dog Shadow. 🐶
Thank you so much, Ana! Last year I moved all the Arios to my unheated little greenhouse during the winter, this year I'm planning to leave them be under the pergola. Wish us luck! Hello Shadow from Cookie!
I hit mine this year, and when I realized how expensive mature specimens were, I went nuts buying seed 😅. I haven’t sown the Ariocarpus and Aztekium yet, but I have many others. I’m always squeezing what I can squeeze. It works well. The seedlings are a quiet source of joy each day, though. I’m enjoying my next chapter. Beautiful collection!
Ha! I'm so glad I'm not the only one! Seedlings and plants have that most wonderful balance of being lovely and bringing a healthy amount of stress too. I feel like that balance of happy and stress is what keeps us so hooked LOL. The squeeze test is the best! And I'm so happy to know that you're also growing from seed.
Thank you so much, Vane! I ended up leaving them under the pergola over the winter, protected from frost but not the cold and rain. Let's see who pulls through to spring...
Yay, I love that you love that ufo + cat pot too! It makes me smile every time I see it. Thank you so much for enjoying Cookie and her Arios and leaving such a lovely comment, Heather!
Ariocarpus isn't really slow-growing, not when you give them acidic water. What I do is I give them a weak solution of fertilizer (ammonium sulfate & 20-20-20). I have retusus seedlings already flowering at 3 years old! So they aren't rot-prone or slow growing when you know what you're doing. I know you're in Arizona but you can use tap water and add some vinegar or tap water. Here's a good video on what I'm explaining. th-cam.com/video/BHc4W6y05jo/w-d-xo.html when you watch the video skip to 8:50 and there's a lot you need to know on how to take care of Ariocarpus.
Wow, flowering at 3 years old! Do you dilute the 20-20-20 fertilizer? That video with Elton is one of my favorites. I've been adding vinegar to my tap water ever since I saw that video and Cactus Quest's video with Peter W saying he does the same. I also collect rain water and use that whenever I can. I swear the plants love it!
Enjoyed the tour of your Ariocarpus collection... I love Ariocarpus! I wish I had more, its hard to get decent specimens here in the UK, few and far between 😄 Wow, all of yours are looking superb, so wonderful to see them in flower too - they are happy 😊 The UFO pot was great too!
Thank you so much, Claire! I love watching your Ariocarpus videos, I think I've watched many of them many times over! Ahh that UFO pot makes me smile every time I look at it , I mean, UFOs abducting cute cats LOLOLOLOLOL
WOW, such a fantastic collection of Ariocarpus, Jenny!! The mature ones are awesome, but I also especially love the smaller ones that you have grown from seed, way to go!! And indeed, as you say, these cacti do also really like growing as groups in community pots or trays - I have been having some really quite good experiences with that way of growing my Ariocarpus fissuratus, actually a dozen seed-grown ones (currently down to eleven, as one decided to opt out unfortunately!) Have shared that group in bloom on my channel recently, and really loved and appreciated your comments, thank you once again! Very best wishes to you and Cookie, she is adorable!
It is so good to read your comment on how Ariocarpus seem to like being in community pots, Joe! I swear the ones that are planted together seem "happier" for some reason although I can't prove it! I've been enjoying Ariocarpus season this year - so many plants in flower which I've been trying to catch on camera. Such an absolute treat when everything else is preparing for dormancy. Cookie says a huge thank you for the compliment!!
@@cookiescacti I completely agree with you, Jenny, I too find that mine just look so much happier growing as a group, and if i look hard enough i think i can even see them smile, haha!!😁😊💚🌵🌵👍

Jenny Wow really enjoyed you tour of your Ariocarpus cookie is a star many thanks hopping to travel to the the USA next year for a visit it’s our 40th wedding anniversary
Wowowow, congratulations on 40 years of marriage! Where are you at in the world, William? Cookie is definitely the star of this channel, and the star of our hearts. Will you visit Arizona or California on your trip?
Hi Jenny (just discovered Cookie is your cat!) I absolutely love Ariocarpi, they are one of my favourite genera! I think most cacti, or indeed plants, prefer being planted together in larger containers, it's moe like nature. A bit of advice, or a suggestion. It depends on exactly what mix you use, and your conditions of course. But the top dressing basically really, really slows down how fast the soil dries out so can promote root rot. Don't forget, the water is sealed in in those pots, it cannot wick away anywhere. Also, if the sun is on the pots and they have top dressing, water cannot evaporate to cool the pot, and the roots may cook! If you don't have a top dressing, it's also easier to judge if they need watering. I generally water mine just once a month from March/April till October/September.
Thanks for the info, Karsten! I live in the Sonoran desert where conditions are extreme in the summer and mild in the winter. Luckily, Ariocarpus do pretty well here and are not nearly as mysterious on care as the south American cactus, well, at least the mature Ariocarpus. Ariocarpus seedlings are still a mystery as they seem to be much less forgiving and die easily. I have my Ariocarpus planted in a super gritty mix and they tend to be on the under potted side. So far they've done quite well. The tubercles being squeezable give me a good indication on when they need water. In the summer they seem to like water every 1-2 weeks and in the winter I let the rains take care of them. They've made it through several growing seasons already and flower nicely in the fall and produce many seed pods in the spring. So far so good!
Btw, I started doing what you described on not applying top dressing to the plants that I'm more unsure about. It's exactly as you said, it allows the pots to dry out faster and allows me to visually see the condition of the soil.
Thank you so much, Patti! I haven't been paying as much attention to the seedlings lately and then surprise myself with their size when I finally give them a good look over. I'm debating hard about what to do with them this winter, leaning towards leaving them in that unheated shade house with a plastic cover... we'll see!
I’m in the middle of my so-called midlife crisis myself, and I’m loving it. Too many kids to feed, or I’d really be off the rails 😂 Unfortunately my favorites are Ariocarpus and Copiapoa. I can always buy younger specimens when I need my fix. Thank you for sharing this beautiful collection
We have expensive taste 😂😂😂 I'm glad I'm not alone in this style of midlife crisis. I'd like to think it's the best flavor of midlife crisis that one can have 😁
Rewatching your videos, I think this may be the specific one that planted the seed that’s blossomed into a thousand dollar pottery collection. It started with Veronika, led into some Pot Dealers. I’ve got five of the six artists mentioned in this video and more. Maybe I’m projecting but I think my plants love them too

Hi! Thank you for your videos.. I enjoy them so much and learn a lot. I LOVE Airocarpus plants and am collecting quite a few as well. I have a question for you.. how is your pergola set up? It seems like you have a regular pergola then added shade cloth around it? I am looking for ideas along this line for my own backyard.. and your plants seem to thrive! Thank you! Tara
I'm so glad you enjoy these videos, Tara! Ariocarpus are such amazing plants! My pergola came with a "shade cloth" like covering so I've continued using that. Then I added a couple of flat top canopies I got from Tarps Plus which I covered with shade cloth. So far so good. And I've managed to barricade the darn birds from getting in and destroying my plants. I'm planning to do a little tour of my shaded spaces some time in December. I'll make sure to show what the structures look like.
Hi Jenny I am from Southport a town near Liverpool I have two greenhouses one 12x8 and 10x6 I mainly grow Haworthia as well as Gasterias and Aloas with a few Cacti ,Yes we will be in Cliforomia and Arizona the trip will be in 2025 in September are early October
Haworthia, Gasteria, and Aloe must do wonderfully in Southport. They do well here until the summers get too hot. You've got some nice greenhouse spaces! I'm jealous 😁
Your Ariocarpus and other cacti are all so healthy. You must be doing something right. I have some Ariocarpus Retusus seeds on the way from the Netherlands. I will try my luck, but don't expect hem to get to any decent size in a hurry. I might have to bight the bullet and buy some established ones.
Thank you so much! I swear I have no idea what I'm doing! I think the climate here helps a lot, then some well-draining soil and kind of leaving them alone for the most part does the trick. I hope I don't have any casualties this winter.... we'll see! I'm so glad you'll be growing some retusus from seed! Although they grow slowly they have on major upside - they are very space efficient for a long time lol. Let me know how it goes!
Oh good I'm glad I'm not the only one! The panic repot happened so many times when I was new to all these plants. It still happens here and there but not nearly as often as in the past.
@@cookiescacti Hehe at least my plants have taken it so far :p Still repot sometimes, most becouse i find pests in newly bought plants... The sellers here in Europe just send you plants full off mealybugs, and we have no other way to kill them besides alcohol, all insecticides are banned here.... So i soak them in 99% isopropyl, which is harsh for the roots. Dumping an expensive Ariocarpus in that feels sad... 🤢Best regards from Denmark !
Wow, hello from Arizona! Oh geez, and root mealies are worst... impossible to realize something is wrong unless you get lucky or it's too late. At least rubbing alcohol is effective!
Awwww thank you so much for the well wishes for Cookie, Tyler. It must be the heat that gets them to flower... I think? They are still mysteries to me.
for fissuratus, give them full sun 8 hours a day, no shade cloth. it will get to 100F or more in a greenhouse in the sun, with full ventilation. also water once a week when you have 90 degree days. they appreciate it and will give a bloomfest in oct. i'm in DC, and they do very well with full sun and water.
Ur lucky its warm for you! Down here in the southern states its supposed to be above 85, due to the cold front from Canada its 46!!!! I was freezing! January weather in October, I hate it! Its supposed to go back up in the 80s next week.
Dang... I heard there was a cold front passing through the south, bringing unusually low temps for this time of the year. Luckily it sounds like it stick around for too long, hang in there!
Thanks so much for the suggestions! I do have a video I made on my soil mix: th-cam.com/video/Ebh2cEFDGNc/w-d-xo.html. I use the same soil mix on all my cactus, including Ariocarpus. Let me think about a video on watering - now that that the season is cooling down I have to remember how in the world I watered them last winter...
@@cookiescacti Yes i found an 28 year old ariocarpus retusus furfuraceus 😁 Wish i could share some pictures, i already bought one when i noticed your last Ariocarpus video when you did repot them 😅 Its like a virus
Sure. I set up a greenhouse. We get pretty hot sun in Australia. 30 minutes and you can get bad sunburn. Then in winter we can get a lot of cold rainy days. At least I can control how much water my cacti get. I put 50% shade cloth on the North facing side. I went to a local old guys home last week. He had some amazing cacti. a lot were 30 to 50 years old. A got some good bargains. I paid only $15 AUD for a pretty old Copiapoa with 3 pups. He had cacti everywhere. I am negotiating a sale on a nice 1 meter Variegated Ammak. Don't underrate your skills. All your videos cacti look so good. I have a Cookie as well, she is a French Bulldog cranky pants with other dogs, but loves me unconditionally. She barely leaves my side.
Dang, that sounds like an amazing bargain and a real treat to see an old collection! I went to a local collector's open garden this weekend that he had the for the cactus society, talk about drooling, omg... Hello to your Cookie from my Cookie! I love that so much. Thank you so much for the kind works, Andy. I feel like the plants have a will of their own and I'm at their mercy most of the time!
@@cookiescacti Great copy, my Cookie says hello. I think I have a short video on my page with her discipling our new puppy Archie. My next dream cactus is a variegated euphorbia Ammak. Enjoy your babies.
You shouldn't wait until they get squishy to water them. They need water a few times a week, just pick it up and look and feel if there is moisture in the drain holes. If there is, wait a day. But if you have a really well draining media you can probably soak it every few days.
Thanks for the tip, Lars! It's probably well suited for my soil medium since it's pretty well draining. I'm just nervous about these plants and err on the side of dry but hoping to build more confidence on caring for them over time. Happy new year!
@@cookiescacti I was so worried at first I left them bone dry for months for no reason. As soon as it's dry at the bottom you're good to go. The more you water them the faster they grow.
I am so jealous right now. I've never had an ariocarpus before. Guess I need to buy one soon. Which one would you recommend as my first ariocarpus? I can't decide. Ps, your pots are gorgeous. It makes me wanna throw mine out the window
Ohhhh! New world to explore! I think Ariocarpus retusus is a great first Ario. It's more readily available and a little more affordable (relatively). What part of the world/country are you at? The eBay seller that I mentioned in the video (larrichan01) has some retusus listed on his eBay shop right now. As for the pots, there are so many great pottery artists out there! I find them on Instagram and can't help buying pots from them.
It's funny you mention that. I thought it wasn't doing anything until I inserted that picture of when I got it into the video... I was surprised myself LOL. I guess that's why it's good to take pictures!
Hmm I know it’s an old video but the ariocarpus you didn’t know what it was (you probably do now) kind of looks like my ariocarpus agavoides. Maybe that’s it? It’s actually funny in a way, I bought my (still teeny tiny) ariocarpus without knowing it’s a wanted plant, since it was one of the first plants that I bought ever. I just thought: Hmm looks like a tiny aloe type plant but is a cactus? I’m sold haha. I was wondering why it was so much more money than the other plants that I bought, but after I searched for the plant online to see other people talking about caring for them I discovered that I had bought a somewhat rare plant by accident. I really love it, hope I don’t kill it....
Hey! I’m located on Ellsworth and Baseline I have like 40 different San Pedro cultivars as well as a couple diff peyote. I just bought my first lloydii the other day they are so cool! Any tips for care! Fertilizer necessary or no? Easily graftable? Thanks in advance :)
Hello local cactus friend! I hope you're staying nice and cool. I haven't grafted Ariocarpus before so I can't give any advice there but I see a lot of grafted Ariocarpus so it should be doable. Congratulations on your first lloydii! I'd say, a nice gritty mix and err on the side of less water. The nice thing is that lloydii tubercles are squeeze-able so you can have an idea of when it's thirsty. I find that they seem to do well in our environment, I leave them outside all winter where they get rained on and they've done fine so far. But I do have them in a gritty mix.
Just please don’t poach these guys… if everyone took their seeds and grew them, in 10 years they would be almost kinda pineapple size worth 100$ just make sure you’re getting them from someone who isn’t taking these beautiful plants from their natural habitat.
100% agree! It's so sad to see plants poached from their natural habitat. It's often difficult for beginners to know how to tell the difference between cultivated vs. poached plants. It's even more difficult to tell when the cultivated plants are hard grown. I've gotten a lot better at telling the difference now, thanks to learning from other plant lovers and watching Cactus Quest's video th-cam.com/video/d9wTHg4Qy78/w-d-xo.html
it is a long term commitment, but it can be done i started 12 years ago and have a few hundred nice ones now, still in 2'' pots, but finally getting some size.
Yes, Kaye! That is so awesome that you'll be growing from seed! One great thing about Ariocarpus seedlings is that they'll be very space efficient for a long time :)

At least rubbing alcohol is effective!
i love all your arios collections!!!
Thank you so much, Yessica! They are taking turns flowering now and I'm trying to make a video diary of it. Stay tuned!
Been waiting for this, nice collection of arios
Thank you so much, Javi. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
Wonderful collection! My ariocarpus rarely flower here in San Jose. I think it doesn't get hot enough here. Hope Cookie is doing well
Awwww thank you so much for the well wishes for Cookie, Tyler.
Your collection is lovely 💓 They are sooo expensive in my area, so I can afford small sizes. But still, they're looking superb!
I think they're expensive everywhere! What part of the country/world are you at, Baruna? Which ones do you have?
Hey! Do a Ariocarpus watering care video, and Ariocarpus soil mix video
Everytime i watch your Ariocarpus videos i have to buy a new one for myself haha
Ha! I love this so much! Did you get a new one?
@@cookiescacti Yes i found an 28 year old ariocarpus retusus furfuraceus 😁 Wish i could share some pictures, i already bought one when i noticed your last Ariocarpus video when you did repot them 😅 Its like a virus
nice collection and I m a new subtribe in India
Thank you so much! Hello from Arizona!
Ansolutely gorgeous❤
Thank you so much, Alexandra!
Ahh love them!
I'm so glad you love these strange and wonderful plants!
Wow your elehpantidens grew a lot in a year!
Ha! I love this story on how you came to your Ariocarpus! When did you get it?
This august before I moved to my own place for the first time in September.
I forgot to mention that I haven't fertilized my Ariocarpus so I don't know if they do better with it.
Hello, is decomposed granite the same stuff that’s used for walkways and driveways?
Yes, it's the same stuff!
@@cookiescacti thank you very much for the reply! I watched several of your videos after I saw this one. You have a very nice collection
The unidentified Ariocarpus could be A. agavoides.
I agree.
Yes! Thank you so much for the ID! I could not remember agavoides for the life of me.
14:30 ariocarpus bravoanus
Hmmm could very well be. Another commenter suggested agavoides. I have a hard time telling the difference between the two.
Love the kitty
Cookie says "thank you, Patii"!
What top dressing do you use? 🤔
Which one? Let me know the time stamp and I'll let you know.
I am about to try and ariocarpus from seeds
it is a long term commitment, but it can be done i started 12 years ago and have a few hundred nice ones now, still in 2'' pots, but finally getting some size.
Yes, Kaye! That is so awesome that you'll be growing from seed! One great thing about Ariocarpus seedlings is that they'll be very space efficient for a long time :)
That's so cool, Bob! Gosh I hope some of my seedlings will survive for 12 years to actually get to some size. That is the dream!
@@cookiescacti zcoan mcoan has suggested a very informative vid a few posts above. it's about a guy who has a tech to grow arios FAST! he uses acidified water, adjusted to pH 5. he uses sodium bisulfite, but white vinegar is just as good. people think their rain water is acid. i just checked mine (in DC) and it is 7.2, alkaline. so i need to adjust mine as well. this knowledge is out there but i didn't take it seriously until i just watched the vid zcoan suggested. the ario info starts at 8:50, but you will end up watching the whole thing.
th-cam.com/video/BHc4W6y05jo/w-d-xo.html
@@bobs5596 Yes, I've watched that video with Elton many times, it's one of my favorites! I've been acidifying my water for over a year now, ever since I saw the video with Elton and Cactus Quest's video with Peter W. I swear it works!
what type do you use for potting soil
I made a video on the soil mix I use for almost all of my cactus, including the Ariocarpus: th-cam.com/video/Ebh2cEFDGNc/w-d-xo.html Some of my Ariocarpus are planted with even more pumice because I was afraid of rot as I was getting to know them, but then over time, I realized with my climate that they could use a little more organics. Here's a video I made on re-potting one of my Ariocarpus: th-cam.com/video/lnY--d46Gdo/w-d-xo.html. Just keep in mind that I live in a very dry and hot climate.
You must have some huge trust fund going to be able to afford all those
Nawww these aren't expensive enough to need a trust to purchase!

Hello! Just wondering if you're using a translator to English because the translation is really hard to understand. TH-cam has a pretty good translator so you can write in your first language and I should be able to understand it. Let's give it a try!
Incredible, great collection
Thank you so much, Daniel!
