Estrid is no longer a novice - Vlog 187 - Beth Endurance

  • Avon Valley Endurance ride was one of the most cheerful, lovely atmospheres I think I've ever felt at a venue. Literally, every single volunteer was so helpful and smiley. The vets were accommodating and chatty and everything just had a really nice vibe. So great work from the Avon Valley team as I feel there's always a bit of frantic paddling beneath the surface to pull these things off but above water all felt calm, smooth and welcoming.
    At the start of the season I had planned to try and get the required 3 40km Novice rides to upgrade to Open done before June, in previous years this is when we've had super hard ground and I hoped that I could beat the weather and get our goals done early, but I also had an option every month up until September if for any/many reasons we didn't complete/get to a ride. We were a little behind due to not getting to our first scheduled ride but we are now mission complete on upgrading Estrid to open.
    She finished her 3rd 40km at 13.1kph in fairly muggy, hot weather, and although the ground was quite hard in places, there was enough grass coverage and loose dirt to make the going at Avon Valley pretty good. She's been placed top 3 in the Performance Formula for every event too! So although her heart rates are high, her natural speed makes up for it.
    I was very impressed with her. Throughout the year she has been excellent on course, super up for it and forward going but we've struggled to stay calm at the venue. At the end of her first ride we couldn't wash her down because she just freaked out about it so we just waited before vetting but this time not only did she have a full wash down with a sponge, she also tolerated an endurance style cool down with buckets poured over her. Not only that but she had slosh bottles out on course too! A huge step in the right direction.
    She also didn't shake at the final vetting at all. She was still pretty wired, but she stood stock still for her heart rates and did a lovely trot up. Our first trot up of the season was across 2 lanes as she made a beeline for another horse but this time it was straight and quite enthusiastic....we definitely looked like we might run over the vet at one point.
    Estrid even chilled out enough at the venue to stand still and have a little snooze, even with lots of horses and vehicles coming past. She wasn't tired, she pulled me all the way back to the field once we got home and hooned around with Tissy so she was genuinely just chilling, which was lovely to see.
    She's been under saddle a year now with light but consistent work so she's going to have some time off to let her brain process, mooch around being a horse and let everything rest before re-assessing what to do with the remainder of the season. Depending on the ground, weather, my finances, etc. I will either just continue to take her to social and pleasure rides, and as many new venues and experiences as possible or I will aim for a two-day 80km at the end of the year.
    I don't remember the last time both my horses achieved their goals for the season but it is a great feeling to have them ticked off, with so much time to spare too!
    Thanks for watching,
    Beth

    I'm a pretty new viewer, started with your earliest vlogs but couldn't help also choosing a second starting point (Estrid's first 40K) so that I could see how you're getting on now.
    What a chill vibe for an endurance ride, felt like you were just taking us on a longer-than-normal hack! Well done to yourself and Estrid (as well as your dad for the crewing - got a good giggle from him sneaking the bucket up to Estrid's nose ha). It's wonderful to see her looking so much calmer at an event and exciting to know you'll be moving on to longer distances now!

      That's what I love about Endurance, it is generally very relaxed and you can do your own thing.
      😆 it makes me laugh that she humours him and just snorts water everywhere 🙈 x

    Congratulations!! Comparing this outing to your first few rides, it's amazing how far she's come! I was worried if she'd ever come to terms in that video where she came off the trailer soaked in sweat and shaking uncontrollably! Awesome job Dad for his crewing expertise! And the hamburger might have been delicious, but it just wasn't up to your normal post- ride picnic standards! 😂

    Three cheers for Estrid! She's doing so wonderfully (even if I am behind here xD), and settling into herself. Congratulations!
    Funny story about Heart Rate Monitors, brought to mind watching Estrid in her polar belt lol: Myself and my stallion recently did our first full loop around our area (almost 5 miles total distance and loads of new experiences for him) training ride.
    I forgot to put the polar horse belt on him (with a garmin heart rate sensor instead of the polar) before saddling, so put it on after we got home, but accidentally dismissed the prompt to add the heart rate monitor to my garmin devices. Sat out there going through the pulse-down motions of hosing, feeding hay, putting him next to his fence-crossed girlfriend. "Why the heck is your heart rate not dropping?!"
    Then I took off my watch and the heart rate vanished. It was me the whole time lol. No doubt he was probably below 60 well before I figured out why "he" hadn't dropped lol

    Omg! I was just thinking about when you first got her, the first time you took her anywhere, etc, and you have done an amazing job!! She is a different horse! I am thrilled to watch your journey together.
    Quick question, here in the US for a 25 mile ride (about 40K right?) we have a vet check with mandatory hold at the halfway point. Do you not have to do that? I mean, either way is fine. It's just interesting. 😊

    • @bethendurance
      @bethendurance  ปีที่แล้ว

      We only have half way vet checks for rides over 48km.
      She's really come on and gained so much confidence, I'm really proud of her ☺️ x

    Thankyou for talking about crew! I have been worried about it because usually I'm on my own or only have my mum to help.
    I was wondering what advice you have to encourage horses to drink, one of my horses drinks really well. And recovers quickly but my other will not drink away from home. I even bring water from home for her.

    • @bethendurance
      @bethendurance  ปีที่แล้ว

      I give mine quite a few options out the danger buckets for training or competition. So plain, electrolyte and mollased sugar beet water they tend to drink one of them eventually.
      If not I feed a really sloppy mash to make sure they're getting some liquids. I tend to find its mainly practice of offering at the same time every time I ride, they eventually get it. X

    Well done Beth. What is your training schedule with Estrid? 58bpm is a bit high especially for her breeding,

    • @bethendurance

      Thank you 😊 it's actually not her fitness, she's just nervous /scared. Her HR didn't come under 90 at the venue for her first pleasure rides so under 60 is a big step forward for her. At home and on course she has quite a low HR x
