not everything that happens to us is predestined. It's a mix of what's coming to us due to our accumulated karma and what we do now , both consciously and unconsciously. Our actions determine what karma we accumulate. If everything was already written, then all the karma we accumulate would also be already written. Locking us into an unending cycle of karma and more karma because of the previous karma. The point of mukti is to break out of this trap and that is possible only if there is some amount of free will. Needless to say, this is just theory I've gathered over time. I'm very much a slave of my innumerable compulsions.

i'd ordered Lance Armstrong's book online. soon after I learnt that he had doped himself thru all the tournaments. never opened the book.
There are so many editions. Which one to buy?
