      As a former music teacher I get it. That send off rarely happens unless you are a beloved football coach or something. One thing I can say about school budgets for the arts....you'll never see a weed growing in a football stadium...they'll cut the arts first. We have a musically ignorant nation who also thinks the Mona Lisa was painted by Taylor Swift...

    My dad spent his career as a music teacher. All my brothers and I had him as a band teacher. When he passed away, I heard from SOO many of his former students telling me what an impact he had made in their lives. I saw this film when it came out in the cinema, and I cried my eyes out. It’s such an underrated film. Great cast, and great story. I had a teacher when I was 11 who noticed that I was awful at math and still counted on my fingers. I was almost about to go to high school here in Australia. He got my mother to come to the school and explained what was happening. Every day he roneoed (yes, old purple smelly, wet roneo copies) of maths tables and got mum to grill me at home. Then every morning I went in early and he tested me. I have never forgotten him. I’m now 66.

    • @dggydddy59
      @dggydddy59 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's an interesting word you used there, roneoed, completely unfamiliar, so much so that I assumed it was a typo. But once you described it, I realized what you were talking about was what here in the US was called a mimeograph. Just another instance of one thing having multiple names depending on where we are. Good day to you!

I've seen it more times than I can count, and I still cry every single time they play the American Symphony at the end. I loved this so much when it came out because I wasn't a teacher but I was a sports coach. I coached kids for 18 years just as a hobby and favor to a private school for free. The biggest satisfaction I ever got was after 10 years or so one of our players who was shy, quiet and a had no friends when we started gave me a big hug at the end of the season and told me thank you. She left our school that year with a dozen new friends and confidence to go forward in life. It still makes me tear up when I think about it 34 years later. This song has been on my phone since 2008.

When my wife was pregnant with our son, I used to play music through headphones on my wife's belly just like in the movie. I would play all my favorite songs. Well life imitates art. My son was born deaf. I struggled in the early years coming to terms with this. The scene where the mom screams "I want to talk to my son" wrecks me every time. Just a gut punch to my soul. I was 22 when I first watched this movie in the theatre and was the last person to leave after it emptied out as I'd been weeping so hard. My father and brother, newly estranged that year are estranged still. Through many years, that have flown by like the career of Mr Holland flew by and I was always the go-between, trying, but failing to heal the breach. In the early Noughties I gifted my well worn DvD copy of this film to my Dad. I watched it with him thinking he would see the parallels with his own life and have some kind of epiphany. It didn't happen. It went completely over his head. 2 years later, I emigrated to Aotearoa New Zealand from England, leaving them both behind and still estranged. It's been 25 years since they last met, and this movie makes me weep every time. Always because its such a good movie, but also because it reminds me of my failure with those two. I wept all over again sharing your first encounter with this genius of a movie, mainly because you grasped the themes so effortlessly and so well in the way that I wanted my own father to grasp them. I've gone on too long , but that's a major part of the reason I had to put an entire planet and all 12 timezones between them and my still aching heart.

    • @dggydddy59
      @dggydddy59 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What a sad, sad story. And I know people have told you that there's no failure on your part here, but it's very true. No one can force another person to change the way they feel and obviously there are very strong feelings driving your dad and brother apart. Getting as far away as possible was undoubtedly the smartest thing you could've done, for everyone. That's all I wanted to say. Best wishes to you.

    Because of dad's attitude towards rock and roll, I mainly listened to what he liked. I was an 80s kid, but I didn't hear much of the music from that era. A bit like you and movies, etc. At home, it was classical, celtic folk , pre rock 50s, as well as old country western music. In the 90s, we left him. He was abusive. One of my sisters moved in, and I introduced to her to my generations music. In return, she introduced us to older artists. Most of which Mum loved, too. Except for the rock/heavy metal type of music. She didn't try and stop me listening to it. But I had to wait until she left the house before I could turn it up. Amongst my siblings, you can either play an instrument or sing with a mezzo-soprano voice. My sister who moved in with us, and I are the singers. But I have a neice who has a trained Soprano voice. She also plays the piano, cello, and violin.

    I was a trumpet player in school (middle school through college) including high school and college marching band. I saw this in the theater when it came out and it definitely resonated with me being a band kid (I was in middle school at the time). Funny enough, we actually played “The American Symphony” in high school band one year during concert band season. One of the publishing firms arranged it for school band so that was a fun one (no electric guitars though like in the movie, lol).
    Also, you are definitely right about marching band, it’s not a one person job. Maybe some of the really small schools that have tiny marching bands could get away with only the director and student leaders assisting but most had at least a second staff person that handled some of the visual and drill elements. Sometimes even more staff though along with volunteers to handle a lot of the logistics. College is even bigger, my college band had about 4-5 people on regular staff under the director along with student leaders, grad student assistants, and additional staff that only worked game days.

    I've played the Trombone since the summer of 1995. I loved jazz band, but my favorite was marching band. I was 2nd chair in the symphonic/honor band here in Houston, Texas. I remember my junior year in high school (2000-2001), we went to the Battle of the Bands (marching bands) that was held in Washington D.C.. We were one of 33 bands that competed. Before the entrance to the stadium, I rolled my foot on the sidewalk. Boy did that hurt! My band director asked if I was able to perform. I said there's nothing that is going to get me out. So, we performed our 4-show competition show. I mention this because, like you said, there's a lot that goes into marching band. One aspect is you have to roll your feet on the outside part of your foot as you march. Try doing that with a broken ankle! Lol. That's what happened to my ankle. I broke it when I rolled my foot off the sidewalk...ouch! But I sucked it up and performed. We finished 4th place in the competition. Well, sir, thank you for your great reaction!!!

But she had to listen to his music and watch movies when he wasn't around. I was her little surprise package. She was 44 when I was born. The youngest of 8 kids, 6 girls, 2 boys with 1 set of twins in the middle. No, we're not Catholic. Mum had problems with medication (they had an extra strong effect on her), and Dad refused to do anything. My eldest sister was 23. There was an 11 1/2 year age gap between the second youngest and I. He was the youngest of my brothers, and he loved having a baby sister. My two eldest sisters were married and having kids. I'm starting another comment.

    Interesting tidbit about this movie....all the individuals that were portrayed as being deaf in the film are actually deaf in real life

    Saw this when it came out. A bit flawed, but as a Dreyfuss fan I loved it nevertheless and will never forget the scene where he sings Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" to his son in front of everybody. Also, nice surprise cameo by Julian Lennon (wrote Cole's Song).

    Save for two years in high school, I was in band from 4th grade to the end of college. All of my band directors were different, but they all affected me. The one with the biggest impact, though, was my junior high director Mr. Kobe (pronounced Koh-bee). He was a real martinet, very strict and demanding. But, he produced one of the best bands in the entire damn state. We won competitions year after year in both symphonic and marching bands, and many of my fellow players did well in solo competitions. I wasn’t nearly as talented, but I always enjoyed the work and results. Kobe could scare the crap out of you, though. One day in practice, everyone was just too restless and screwing around. He finally just tossed his baton in the air, stepped off the podium, walked a few steps back to the table and chair set behind him and sat down, glaring at us all for a full five minutes. Within the first minute, we were dead silent and just waited for him. Finally, he stood up, grabbed his baton off the ground, got back on the podium, and said in a lethally quiet tone, “Now that I have your attention, let’s try that again.” We got back to work.

    He reminds me of my high school band director who was a great teacher and made us believe in ourselves. Even looks like him a little bit.

    I really loved this movie when I saw it and it really good though it seems to have declined a bit in my mind over time.
    The Rowena thing was a bit odd when I was young, but maybe ages a bit worse now. Thankfully nothing really happens and it's fairly innocent as these things go. (I think in that era there were shows and films that had High School teachers going way further than "chaste kiss on cheek" and sometimes sided with doing so.)

    I don't think this movie needed the Rowena subplot. It's interesting how it's played as a temptation/marriage crisis story for the most part, when, while important, there are obviously a lot of other issues with it.
