    At 4:34 did you mean to write a plus? And if not can someone explain why?

      Yes!! You're absolutely right. Thanks for catching that mistake.
      Luckily, all we are looking for in the end is a way to make the terms of the transition dipole moment nonzero (we don't care about their sign). So I managed to get the correct selection rules even with the sign error.

      I'm not sure what you mean. The equation for the wavefunction? Alpha appears there twice
