Suppose there are 10 longs and 50 short positions open in the market. Now with this, only 10 positions can be closed, since there are only 10 longs in the market. What would happen to the other 40 open positions?

why? a short position will also be need to be closed then only short covering happens and rest 40 will be closed and OI will be decreased.

you said in call unwinding or short covering open interest decreases. but simultaneously you said if some body sell somebody purchases , so number of contract remain same, it sounds contradictory, please explain
