    My fix for bloody shins was accidental. For several months I had to lift in a place where I couldn’t drop weights so I didn’t drop the bar while lifting. It meant lifting a bit less weight but I lifted then lowered the bar to the starting position. This corrected my deadlift and no more bloody shins. Hope this helps someone.

    Hardest part of the deadlift for me is "squeezing my chest up." Does anybody have any (correct) cues to help this? Also, thanks as always for the great instruction, Alan. This video is probably one of my favorites from you recently, partially because its a subject that needed to be touched on, but more importantly (IMO), you point out that some of your older instruction videos have flawed cues/instructions (Ex.narrower stance on OHP rather than your current advice which is a shoulder width/ slightly wider stance) and correct them. This updated information is much appreciated, as I watched your early videos religiously when learning to lift, and recommended them to others. Keep up the great work!

    great vid! I now understand the last thing i'm doing wrong with deadlifting. Which is i don't let my shins come forward when i sit my hips down. This causes the gap of an inch to stay between the bar and my legs for the entire excercise which makes it harder than it has to be.

    For someone who bleeds occasionally when I deadlift I agree that it can be excessive at times. But I’m a sumo puller which puts my shins on the gnurling rather than the smooth part so I find it More acceptable. Also if I do bleed I make sure to clean the bar thoroughly afterwards.

    My shin scraping issue was due to not starting with the bar over mid foot. I didn't understand what this meant and would split my size 13 foot in half with the bar. Once things started to move and align where they needed to be I'd have a barbell swinging into my shin. Once I started setting up one inch off the barbell it was no longer an issue.

  • @drednac
    @drednac 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The only concern that I have with the deadlift is the back angle. The more horizontal angle the more stress on the back and the more strength you need to keep your back straight during the movement.
    I ruined my back twice with a light weight.
    Lately I started doing sumo deadlifts and it feels much better to me I can have more vertical position of the back and finally feel like the most work is done with my lower body and don't feel as much of stress on my lower back. I think it has something to do with my hip bone (which is very narrow), I have also started to squad in the wider stance with much better stability and stronger back position. I was thinking all the time there must be something wrong with my form all the time, but I think it's more about my personal physiological limitations (bone structure maybe lack of flexibility, muscle imbalances).
    Alan, maybe you could do video about sumo deadlifts.

    This applies to all lifts. You don't OHP or do pull ups unless you have a crater for a chin, don't bench unless your chest looks like train tracks, don't curl unless your shoulder (and hip) are constant hue of black and blue. Face pull until you have rope burns in your eyes. Only way to train safely.

  • @MrNathe9999
    @MrNathe9999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Alan, very good video as always. 2 things I feel like adding to it:
    1) The cue of "falling back" is not a good cue. The cue of actively pulling the bar to your shins, especially at the begginning of the deadlift is a good cue, atleast it was for me and for a couple of lifters I gave a bit of advice. It helps you to keep the bar in contact with you, not letting it to go away. It keeps you to stay in position and not to make laverages any worse. Also, helps you to activate the lats and therefore making whole back tighter, especially the upper part.
    2) What might also help to not destroy your shins during the deadlift is wearing leggins or high socks or both. There is a reason why IPF has the rule that you have to wear high socks for deadlift.

    Shin just bled (minor) from deadlifting (after watching video). Was deadlifting without straps and grip started slipping at the top, so I tried to quickly bring the weight down (steel plates over concrete at home, so I am not going to drop it).

    I find it easier to be in correct position with a hook grip than over under. When using over under I am likely to scrape my chins but not when I am using hook.

    Both my shins and knees bleed. My shins usually bleed at the start and my knees at the end. This varies though. If I use a different bar, I will not bleed. The bars I bleed on have really rough and sharp knurling. I basically use your techniques but my fix was just sleeves and chalk.

    the real epiphany moment for me was at 4:20 . maybe I'm just high though. In all seriousness, stay "bent over" at the hips and just straighten your knees until the bar is above the knee, then straighten the hips by pushing them forward.

    I never had a problem with it running my shins. It always rubbed the tops of my knees when I went down with the bar.

    I got a bloody shin one time. It was because I dropped the 300-pound bar and there was a 2.5 lb plate on the floor and Wendy plates on my bar hit it the direction of travel was deflected 90° into my shin. It was like being hit with a baseball bat. At first I thought it was because I rolled the bar when I let it go and the little plate on the floor was hidden under my bar where I couldn't see it. So on the next lift it happened again. I continue to lift the rest of the night but I was a hurting unit for the next three days

    Brilliant video, as usual - But damn, you are making me jealous of those blue Adidas Pretereo 2's, impossible to find now, especially here in the UK.
