I've never flown a geared 600 'Cat, but I would imagine you could fill the hopper with lead shot and still get off in 1500 feet.....what a load hauler it must be!
Ag-cats are awesome. I love their looks and the sound when you see one flying along. Lol. The prop on this one does look uncomfortably close to the ground... Maybe it's me. Lol
I think i can...nope. I think i can, i think i can...nah. Go away 'n leave me alone!! Ohh allright then, lets do this thing. Seriously, what a strong, confident sound! Best soundtrack for anything really. That's proper music. Best wishes
This guy needs a bit of a lesson on cold starting 1340, 15-20 strokes on the primer, 6 strokes on the throttle, then wind her over, after 6 blades or so, mags on. Then after she fires, left hand ready on the primer to give it more if she dies.
Yes, I remember that. It was in Nicolaus, CA, a small mostly farming town north of Sacramento. Used to live there. On my way to school as my dad was driving down highway 70 I saw the plane down in the rice fields, with the news crew all around it. Once I got to school I learned the pilot had died. Probably the most interesting and sad thing to happen in Nicolaus.
600 hp of badass........ See, you CAN start a cold radial without having it backfire. The trick is to not have the throttle open too much which causes a lean mixture when it is cold, and lean means backfire. Just be patient, she'll come......
LOL!! You gotta LOVE all the responses from the armchair radial engine "experts" on here, who more than likely have never started a 1340AN-2, and have never actually flown anything with that engine on the nose... ESPECIALLY not an Ag Cat. Makes me chuckle every time I read!!
I do have a few thousand hours behind these "heavy metals" I've also hand propped them, yes the "armstrong starter" on occasion. Fairly low compression these, so its possible to swing them thu 2 compressions. Lots of priming, pull thru 10 blades or so with mags OFF, then with chocks in place, mixture rich, prop coarse, gnats cock on the throttle, and SWING.
I had real trouble starting one a few years back after maintenance...it went with full throttle and lean mixture...they'd reconnected the controls backwards....
The geared 1340 and three blade hydromatic were only use on two other aircraft that I know of, the single engine Otter and the Grumman Mallard, he will however find out that the geared 1340 isn't as reliable as the straight drive 1340.
It's a three bladed prop. The ag cat came with a two blade. This owner wanted to swing an extra blade so a gear box was installed to swing the bigger prop.
I never heard of any cold start like what you just described. I do 5 shots of prime, hand on the throttle. Pump the throttle as it's turning blades. Fires right up.
Radial engines are some of the best sounding engines.
I owned this plane many years ago. Loved the geared 1340. We did 2 geared engine conversions in our shop.

sounds great!
N8267K crashed in 2012 near Yuba City California and the pilot received fatal injuries.
This one is N8276K. It looks like it was damaged in 2004 by hitting a crawfish boat on the runway during landing?!?!

Is an Hamilton Standard 23D40 propeller and are you fliying without problems

Holy shit lol
Tall tail conversion. Possibly a hershey kit.
Cold start? May be idle?
More prime! lol We had same geared/hydro 3 blade on a Thrush. Contemplated that setup on my ag-cat with 295 hopper and light airframe bet she hops!
Awesome... gotta love those classic rotary piston engines... was that a Studebaker in the background.?
Bud Man ...Radial, not rotory.

Its about half way there until its due till its next overhaul
How do you hand start one of these? it takes a lot for me to pull the prop through in the mornings.
that looks like somewhere in Arkansas , the country side looks familiar .
@colinwinstanley . How do you know it's a she
The engine from the De Hav piston Otter
The prop os very close to the ground!!!
I thought it was going to take off 😂
Ya gotta love a radial....
nope a hudson
new prop?
