I'd have to agree with Karolina when she says what would they would be going back to cause at the end of the day they were just a bunch if kids with powers running from the law.
I'm really digging this current run of The Runaways, but I've had one question for it. Where did this whole Nico seemingly romantically liking Carolina thing come from. I've read the previous runs of the book and I only remember Carolina having a crush on nico before she got with Xavin, and Nico didn't reciprocate her feelings. Did I miss a point where this was previously established?
Hey, it was always hinted at in the comics that Nico regretted turning Karolina down, but the hints were inconsistent and there was never any follow up - in my interpretation, there was some creative hemming and hawing from BKV about how to resolve the Xavin / Nico / K triangle, and after he left I dont think any subsequent author was daring or forward thinking enough to make a queer relationship so front and center (or maybe unceremonious cancellations and authors taking too much of their sweet time were to blame). Because of the lack of closure, a lot of readers started writing off or ignoring the hints (fairly so). For hint reference, I would revisit the few issues right around when Karolina returns from space. There's a scene of Nico going through her clothes and questioning why it hurt so much to have her leave. She is also seen praying over her bracelet, and mistaking Gert for Karolina when she is awoken in the middle of the night. The above could be seen as ambiguous, but in combination with Karolina's return scene there are definite vibes. Nico asks where she and Karolina almost kissed, which is the same question she asked Alex to verify his identity in an earlier issue. She then is shown to be disappointed upon hearing K and Xavin are together, and Xavin jealously snatches Karolina's bracelet from an embarrassed/ demure looking Nico Later, Nico will be seen being not too fond of Xavin, even being ok with leaving them for dead. After that though, it's like BKV cant decide if he actually wants to break up Karolina and Xavin, and nothing happens - tho there is this scene I cant quite place chronologically, where Nico dreams her parents call her a slut for kissing a bunch of boys, to which Nico responds "I'm figuring out who and what I'm into". Seemed very gay to / my / gay ass :p And another scene where BKV teases the f out of us when he has Xavin shapeshift into Nico. Tho Karolina doesnt cheat, she reaffirms she never stopped having feelings for Nico, looking ashamed when she says "You know I find you attractive" and "I care about you more than youll ever know". Whedon picks up on these unresolved hints after BKV leaves the series. He has a scene with Karolina and Nico on the rooftop where Karolina strongly implies Nico isn't doing the work to figure her sexuality out. Nico cries over it in a cloud of rainbow dust and it's super gay. The jealous vibes between Nico and Xavin are also on full display in a couple scenes, and when Nico gets stabbed by a ninja or some shit Karolina is definitely the most distressed. Whedon breaks Nico and Victor up...but then leaves the series. After Whedon's run, there's definitely more hints under various authors. For instance, there is a scene in the Nico throws a dance party issue, where Nico interrupts K dancing with Chase. Nico and K cuddle up suuuper close while Nico tells Karolina to be true to herself. Their faces are like inches apart when Molly pops up, as if she has interrupted something. But then Nico hooks up with Chase? Which, funnily enough, is also what she did the / first / time K tried to kiss her. Could definitely be seen as running from her gay feelings. But then that arc was cancelled a couple issues later I think -_- So who knows what was or wasnt about to happen. The team leader being in a queer relationship with another protagonist like that would have been really before it's time anyway, so I wouldnt be surprised either way. I'm so glad they're going there with the current issues tho and finally bringing some closure to that whole storyline But while I think it is great the new creative team has picked up where the hints left off and tried to resolve them, I do hope they will actually have Nico and Karolina have a convo about things and find some narratively consistent explanation for what was going on in their heads during this time - because a lot of straight readers are gonna feel confused (Such as, I do think it makes a ton of sense for some queer people to not be ready to move quickly on their same sex attractions at such a young age, and to throw themselves at guys bc it feels easier and less shameful. Meanwhile, others move more quickly like Karolina...embarassment from a rejection from a 'straight' friend also maybe contributed to her jumping into other relationships and putting up an extra barrier between her and Nico - but having to head canon a very particular queer experience will leave a lot of people disappointed I think. The number of straight ppl - and some queer - that saw Nico rejecting the kiss and making out with boys as definitive proof she is straight just goes to show not everyone will come to that explanation on their own)

Outright confirming it at that time would perhaps have been seen as pushing the envelope too far, yet they didn't want to just flat out sink it either, partly(i believe) so as not to dissapoint the people that shipped it and partly because they wanted to have the opportunity available in case they ever did decide to go down that route in the future(as is apparently the case now). So as a result, Karolina&Nico was stuck in this weird ambigious limbo situation for years. And yes, i very much agree with you that i hope the new team take their time to explain their backstory properly, i'm curious as to why Nico never made any moves on Karolina after Xavin disappeared but before Julie appeared, for instance.
Pretty much like all of Nico and Karolina's lines together were Nico comforting Karolina about losing Xavin. Even Julie was like "we should go on a date but omg would it be too soon bc of Xavin?" So the easiest explanation would be that Nico didn't make a move out of a fear it would come off as too soon or insensitive. But...yeah. Again, it is annoying as a reader to have to write fanfic in your head to explain characters' motivations

I gotta admit, while when I read the older runs of this book, I didn't interpret those moments you guys brought up as hints towards Nico liking K, I can see that yeah those could be hints. Only the writers truly know whether were meant to be or not. I think the reason why I didn't see them as hints was because she rejected K when she confessed to her, and never seemed to be confused about kissing who she wanted to kiss. But yeah if the current writer wants to go down this route im all for it, as long as like one of you guys said they sit down and actually talk about it so that people like me who didn't see those as hints wont be completely confused. And they could really do that because this series is more fit for scenes like that of any comic marvel's putting out currently. I'm just glad theres actual evidence for this relationship. Because one of my biggest pet peeves is when writers ship two main characters (guy or girl) with no previous hints of romantic interest out of nowhere simply because the loudest fans ship them. Prime example being KorraxAsami from lengend of Korra. I have no problem with the relationship, but as someone who has watched that series multiple times, and looked for any hints, I could not find any save for one scene a few episodes prior to season 4's finale. So yeah as long as theres prior build up im good.
I've been thinking about reading The Runaways, in case I just finished Vol. 1 and 2, and start reading Rainbow Rowell, I've been reading that Volumes 3 and 4 are pretty bad, so I just shouldn't read them????????????????????, are Civil War: Young Avengers and Runaways, Secret Invasion: Runaways/Young and Avengers Avengers Arena worth reading

This is the fourth. However, the first two runs were mostly lead by Brian K Vaughan, as a result, people refer to them as one "run". Xavin left earth in the third run. Watch my "History of The Runaways" all of this info is in that video.

Im a fan of the new series, but I feel this. There are times when it really needs to delve a little deeper, both into the characters' motivations and also into more complex plot lines. Yes, BKV's Runaways were never a super hero team, but each issue DID build on and connect to a unified and complex underlying plot. Rowell's plots feel a lot fluffier and episodic, like there is a lack of tightness even as she is tackling hella good shit - like bringing Gert back and the questions of time travel and fate, or Nico's power struggles and questions of guilt for not saving her parents and fear of becoming them. And while Rowell does an excellent job building character relationships (Gert and Chase is marvelous), I feel like sometimes we get jilted there too (for all the Karolina and Nico stuff, their dorm room convo in issue 3 was their most substantial/deep talk - and only Nico was being particularly real...to be fair, though, no writer ever has given Karolina and Nico much to say to each other) I really do want to see this series succeed. It is not all Rowell's fault that Marvel only gives her so many pages to work with. Now that it's been green lighted through issue 18, I expect to see a lot of awesome go down. And for 1-9, theyre absolutely worth catching up on meanwhile - if youre not waiting a month for each issue, the vague and or fluffy moments arent as likely to feel slow and distracting

Show: Runaways, simply beautiful. Unlike Titians, which could be better and more true to the characters cough cough.
Both runaways and titans were good and so was cloak and dagger.
