Thanks again, Julia. Just trying to figure out structure as far as What constitutes an ACT or scene. I'm GUESSING an ACT is similar to a chapter, but I'm very new at this.

I'd say that, usually, a scene is more like a chapter. It's a chunk of action and dialogue that's usually set in one location and focused on one specific idea. An act is a bit larger - more like a "section" of a book. Most contemporary plays have only one or two acts, maybe three. Acts are usually broken up by an intermission, but they don't have to. Acts are necessary to consider in longer plays because in live theatre, the audience needs a break every 90 minutes or so to stretch their legs or use the bathroom. (In a book, readers can use the bathroom whenever they want.) If you're able to read scripts (check your local library or bookstore or search online) or watch live or recorded performances, I think that's absolutely the best way to get a good understanding of how scripts are structured. :) Hope this helps!

Hi, Rivv Is Disturbed! Thank you so much for the comment! I started writing plays in high school, and I made these videos specifically for the high school students in my playwriting class, so I have a special place in my heart for teen playwrights. I'm so glad you feel that they've improved your playwriting skills! Feel free to comment again if you have any questions. There's no "right" way to write, but I hope these lessons can serve as a helpful starting place. :) Wishing you all the best on your play and all of your writing!

Hello, I'm currently a student from NYC studying playwriting in English. My teacher assigns your videos to assist us in the creative process, and I would like to say that everything you do is fantastic! I enjoy watching your videos, and so far, they have brought proper structure, meaning, and creativity to my play. Thank you for all the inspiration, and keep up the good work! I'm actually wondering though, what was the first play you had ever written about? Your ideas sound extremely intricate and well thought out! Have a fantastic day!

Hi, Sierra! Thank you so much for the comment and the question! I think my first written play was when I was a sophomore in high school, and it was a (painfully cheesy) story about high school friendships and romances. I don't remember much of the specifics but I'm sure I still have the script somewhere. I made up a lot of short plays as a little kid, too, and made my friends act them out with me. :)
Best of luck with your writing!

Hi Julia! Like everyone else here I am a student from NYC. My english drama teacher has used your videos to teach us and I have found them so helpful. For your exposition video I didnt think about writing about a character and their life before the play but I have written pages upon pages for each character and it has made writing my play so much easier. I appreciate you making these videos as they have helped so much. Keep up the good work! Im actually a lighting tech but your videos have helped bring a new perspective of theatre. I look at everything from a tech perspective but with your tips and tricks I have been able to make my writing better. Thanks so much!

Hi, Joe! Thank you so much for the comment! I'm so glad you've found writing out the backstory helpful - it's one of my favorite ways to better understand my characters and the world of the play. And hooray for being a lighting tech! I love and appreciate all the different aspects of tech so much, and I've always found that the more I understand any one aspect of theatre (even if I don't do it much myself), the more I understand how theatre works together as a whole. Best wishes!
