The thing I don’t get about books that want an instantly all in protagonist is why they don’t give her a bit of an edgy/over the top backstory herself to prop that up….she’s a demon or a supernatural mercenary and the world and her existence is chaotic and lurid or something. You could still invent scenarios or encounters that surprise and challenge and threaten her if you put your mind to it and wanted that spice of danger etc. you’d just need to be imaginative

Legit asking- is there any dark romance without rampant misogyny/preying on minors? Every time I start to read one, I'm turned off so much by the grossness. I just assumed it came with dark romance.
I wish people understood that "sex is a neutral act and isn't inherently sinful and we should destigmatised it" and "sex can be used as a tool for self harm and we should be careful to to equate all forms of promiscuity with sexual liberation" are not mutually exclusive statements
I feel like...the Lost Boys smoking their cigarettes weird could work if Winnie saw them do that and was like "wtf why are they holding them weird?" like showing Peter and the other Lost Boys aren't actually mature or grown-up, they've just been play-acting as way more edgy and grown-up than they actually are. then again, that would mean exploring the themes of like...innocence and maturity and stuff aaaaand...I don't think the author was interested in that, seems like
It’s so strange how the narrative treats Cherry. At the beginning Winnie tells us something along the lines “the thing is, when you give out sex so freely you are always invited to all the parties”. We are presented with this idea that promiscuity makes you popular, at least on a superficial level. Latter on all the boys are instantly seduced by Winnie and her overly sexual behavior. But when they talk about Cherry they are annoyed with her and call her “desperate”. The same guy who says he doesn’t like Cherry because she “gives it up too easily” is instantly overtaken by lust the moment Winnie lets out a moan when he grabs her by the neck. And the whole time all I can think is “how is Winnie’s behavior any different from Cherry’s? Why does the latter get treated so poorly and with such disrespect?” Lastly, I don’t understand how are they instantly so tempted and seduced by Winnie when they live in an environment where sex is so common. They act like they haven’t seen a woman in years. 🙄 I get it, the author wrote this book to fulfill a very specific kinky fantasy so I’m probably overthinking it, but the double standards and misogyny still bother me, I just can’t unsee it.
It's because Winnie a heroine (read: the author self insert) & Cherry is some other bitch (read: someone for the writer to abuse so that she can feel better)
Desperately don’t wanna play devil’s advocate in this instance but it might come from the forbidden nature of getting with a Darling girl since they’re off limits sexually and they can have Cherry whenever they want with no consequences. Regardless it is still gross how Cherry is treated since she acts just as promiscuous as Winnie does.

It’s been a long time since I read it so I can’t remember all the details, but I’m pretty sure it’s made clear that the Lost Boys really haven’t ever had sex with any of the previous Darlings. Like Pan made the “we don’t f*ck Darlings” rule because he was still in love with Wendy and so it would legitimately be weird to hook up with her daughter.
The timeline of this curse thing is really confused. The book and characters treat it like it's been hundreds of years (200 gets mentioned once, right?), but once you get details, you find out that Winnie is the 4th generation. So. They've done the kidnap-and-break-them thing twice before, since Wendy was the one to steal the shadow... Or maybe 3 other times if they went after Wendy's sister. So how do they have so many expectations, how have they "seen everything" after 2 or 3 times doing this? Also...4 generations is not 200 years. My grandfather has a great-grandson, and he's 86.
So glad you like them. I have great news!!! Not only will I be reviewing book 2... but 3 and 4 as well! Some lovely little weirdo commissioned me to read the entire series so happy holidays to us!
I feel like the dynamic the main character had with the SW neighbor is a dynamic she could of had with her own mother instead. Could of had some type of love hate mommy issue situation, instead of a neighbor giving a MINOR girl highly questionable "advice" But speaking of vampires that weren't in this book (which I don't think they could have saved it), my recommendation is Contract Bound by Elle Mae. It's an enemies to lovers and sapphic/lesbian. It has a second book but I haven't read it yet.

@@beej13 that is the issue. Peter Pan never wanted to be an adult. He is forever a child. The reason he took Wendy away in the original story is because she was leaving the nursery and into her own room (meaning she was no longer seen as a child). She left Neverland because she realized that she was ready to grow up. This story has absolutely nothing to do with Peter Pan other than in name only.
@@beej13 If you only use names, but nothing else that derives from the mythos, you are not doing a reimagining, you are just putting a skin on your book. You could change the names, and it would not affect anything about the story whatsoever. It feels like a cash grab by just using the names from the story and saying, “Put me on a shelf next to Neon Gods!” The question becomes if Peter Pan is supposed to be a symbol for childhood, (especially as a response to how childhood is viewed in Victorian England) what is this author saying about childhood by using these characters in this fashion?
I’m kind of obsessed with author’s making analogies like the tree on the lake, where they have made a presumption about the meaning of the thing that no one else has made. I read a story once where the main character knew to avoid something dangerous “the way trees know to grow away from power lines” like… you know trees have to be cut that way right? Trees grow into power lines all the time and put the lines at risk, not the trees. Like that could still be a cool analogy about cleaving off the part of yourself that reaches for danger(?) if the author knew that, but they clearly didn’t.
Among everything else, you focusing on the wrong use of the singular "means" had me wheezing, this is the review I didn't know I needed. Thank you for your service.
The things that drives me the most insane is how clearly the author didn't spend a single SECOND thinking about the timeline and backstory of this whole thing. I just... can't!

Also...4 generations is not 200 years. My grandfather has a great-grandson, and he's 86.
Nothing like quality snark to accompany my morning coffee and inspire me to write better than... this.
I’m glad we could start this day together ♥️🤓
Door wouldn't treat me like this
Door would NEVER

The voices you do for the characters are *chef’s kiss*
BOOK 2!!! BOOK 2!!!!! Your reviews are incredible.
Could of had some type of love hate mommy issue situation, instead of a neighbor giving a MINOR girl highly questionable "advice"
But speaking of vampires that weren't in this book (which I don't think they could have saved it), my recommendation is Contract Bound by Elle Mae. It's an enemies to lovers and sapphic/lesbian. It has a second book but I haven't read it yet.
Listening to this for the second time and I just realized that this book is literally just an ACOTAR fanfic. There are so many parallels
"Zade... Is that you?" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I give these fools... 2 out of 5 Zade Meadows
@@weirdobookclub it just caught me off guard cus I was like "didn't I just hear a review about a dude with face scars and 2 different eye colors?"
Then boom, on cue "Zade is that you?" And I spat laughed because it was like oh yeah, that guy!! 🤣🤣🤣
I have found my corner of the internet. It’s right here on TH-cam, listening to you talk about these books, all the while kicking my feet and cackling like a lunatic.
I love this. I love you. Cheers. ❤️
I love the way you announce each chapter! The different ways your exasperation comes out makes me laugh 😂
Also, Peter Pan is supposed to be a pre-teen…soooo🤢
Right! IM CONCERNED
He's an adult in this book. Don't look for problems in this, they're ALL 18+😊
@@beej13 that is the issue.
@@janamalene0129 yeah, but that is the dark romance point. It isn't supposed to be exactly like It.
@@beej13 If you only use names, but nothing else that derives from the mythos, you are not doing a reimagining, you are just putting a skin on your book. You could change the names, and it would not affect anything about the story whatsoever. It feels like a cash grab by just using the names from the story and saying, “Put me on a shelf next to Neon Gods!”
The question becomes if Peter Pan is supposed to be a symbol for childhood, (especially as a response to how childhood is viewed in Victorian England) what is this author saying about childhood by using these characters in this fashion?
In one night??? He made crossaints IN ONE NIGHT???
The island *is* magical…
this comment deserves more likes lol
It wouldn't have changed much if the author had just made her 21. But they just had to make it (extra*) creepy by making her barely 18.
when you were talking about having a toolbox and was like “how do you think these got hung up?” But one of them is up with duct tape 😂
It is WASHI TAPE Victoria, don’t do this 😂😂😂
i’d rather be alone in a room with frankenstein’s monster than any of these male love interests.
“Every ounce of brain and boob” killed me immediately
I read this because a friend rec'd it and I got halfway through the third book and it just gets so much worse. It's written… very interestingly
Omg it gets WORSE?! Im happy for yall (and the reviews this will bring) but scared for me lol
Oddly considering the topics of the books involved, your reviews have become my 'comfort channel' 😊
Im looking forward to lots more!
Yay, thank you! I'm glad to be a comfort of any kind :)
There are FOUR of these?!
The things that drives me the most insane is how clearly the author didn't spend a single SECOND thinking about the timeline and backstory of this whole thing. I just... can't!
I see this in a lot of the books I read in this genre. It isn't a genre based issue of course, I am just up to my eyes in dark romance so I have more insight right now.
Wait I just realized
Peter says he can't fly anymore, but he kidnapped her
HOW-
How did he leave neverland without flying??
So, I have been lurking and watching your videos. But when you did the impression of him speaking with the smoke in his mouth, I choked and subscribed.
How many times have I repeatedly watched this video?
Yes.
i had SO MUCH FUN lmao you outdid yourself!!!!!
I have been sent by Reads with Rachel and I am not far in but I’m not disappointed!
Also reading that synopsis has me laughing so hard!
4:37 I am dying here!
This is hilarious!
12:13 I am reading this book and cracking up!
16:58 so the shadow things is actually in an anime called one piece and it is interesting.
If you're looking to read something you genuinely might like, I cannot recommend Hunger Pangs by Joy Demmora enough! Werewolf/Vampire slow burn praise k*nk with Jane Austin meets Terry Pratchett vibes. First book I ever enjoyed a ballroom scene in!
I suffered through all 3 books. ON AUDIO 😢 christ on a fruit roll up that audio was ear splitting. Cant do ohysical books so, yeah. The cringe kept me going, and I'd read certain parts to my husband just to see his reaction. 😂 omg that series was... sometning. Thanks for your review!
Same, they were so bad but I had to keep going to see how much worse they got 😂
5:24 no nO NO STOOOOP WHYYY
To think that I expected not weird comments about underaged individuals from a peter pan book where the character outright calls her boyfriends "Boys"
The author is probably middle aged and old enough to be my aunt, stop it 💀
How do you only have 2k subscribers???? I was thoroughly entertained, thank you for this quality commentary.
I love videos like this that aren't condemning kinky books in general, but are instead talking about the issues within a specific book and how they reflect larger harmful tropes.
Coming back 3 months later to say that if you write a book about SUPER explicit sex about someone who JUST turned 18 and writing about them the way this author writes about Winnie, I'm calling the police
Edit: as a twin, STOP THIS TWIN INCEST BULLSHIT. AAAH. AAA. AAAAAAH.
19:27 - ok it's been a while since last time I did a spit-take but here we are. Had to wipe coffee from my stylus but it was worth it. XD
PS: Wait, didn't the extract mention Hook? Am I the only one who expected him to make an appearance? I guess he was there just to say Pan was the real villain without mentioning him directly.... But why would you mention a character if he's not going to appear in your book? Weird.
PPS: So sorry to hear you've been having a hard time. Hope things improve soon!
your editing and voice acting is a treat, thank you for this 😂
Hey so, I just saw this audiobook on spotify premium and almost WASTED my listening hours on it, thank YOU for this review
"It has 192 pages"
Oh, at least its short!
"And is book one... of FOUR-"
Oh no. Oh good God no.
1:20 in and I am already strapped in and ready for this ride. As always, thank you for your suffering
Happy to do it for my peeps 🐥
The Child Thief by Brom is a good Peter Pan retelling! it’s not spicy but it’s dark + gory and has a lot of cool mythical creatures in it
Not the Island boys jumpscare 😭
1. I would love for you to read/review the sequel holy shit
2. If you’d like a really good really queer Peter Pan book with some romance, Peter Darling by Austin Chant is amazing and made me cry 💕
i’m literally 10 minutes into this video and already the writing is groan worthy i can’t imagine subjecting myself to read the whole thing. youre so brave i could never.
Oh my god? I’m so excited to have stumbled across your channel! Your way of talking about the book is so fun! I’m excited to see what else you’ve got!! The perfect thing to put on while working
your reviews are honestly doing SO much to inspire me to finish my dark romance. if they can get published, then my dumbass can too!
this doesn’t help but wendy’s daughter is named jane, according to the original text. so the family tree goes wendy, jane, merry, winnie
Took this book off of my goodreads want to read list while this played in the background. Kinda poetic if you think about it.
where are they getting all these cigarettes?? is someone on neverland growing tobacco? does pan go into town to pick up a carton every once in a while? does he have an id? does he have money? the logistics of this have distracted me for half this video
lol...just popping in to say anytime i see you pop up on my feed, it's an instant watch 😂
The fact that it took me a long time to realize this was a retelling of Peter pan 😭😭😭
Is this book supposed to be sexy?!
Yes my love, yes it is.
And it haunts me
@@weirdobookclub this video is the one that finally made me become a patron. You’ve sacrificed so much for us mere mortals
Couple hours after turning 18 getting kidnapped ✋🏽💀 and she’s being chill??? MA’AM WHAT IS THIS???
I'm half way through the video and I just have to say, this is the most entertaining thing I've watched on TH-cam in months. I have paused the multiple to put my head in my hands and yell "NO." Thank you for subjecting yourself to this book, and for making this video.
i thank the algorithms of yt for introducing me to your videos. now i won't have to suffer alone with these plots and enjoy your jokes.
thank you for the giggles!
Just wanted to say your sense of humor is literally SO GOD DAMN FUNNY. I find myself laughing out loud several times in every video I’ve watched of yours. I’m not even a romance genre fan in any way but I watch these videos just for your reactions 😭
I just realized on this rewatch that you said birds have anuses, but I'm pretty sure they don't. They have a cloaca instead, like reptiles do.
I figured that out after I cut the review and just said “f it” and left it in 😂
Ah, oh well, it suits the book anyway
these books are so bad that they are a goldmine for this kind of content. Very excited t have found your channel through this.
I cannot wait for you to read about croc and hoo kin the next book. croc is the most absurd character (somehow more absurd than like some of the others?!?! ) and... god these books are just hilariously strange and bad that they are a guilt pleasure. it's like the characters don't really have any unique personalities, they just get like a drop down menu of actions to choose and always choose the strangest action.
also, also, also I need y'all to know at the end of book 4 the author said this series is over with Winnie but the world isn't and the next series will be a continuation of this series following hook and croc If im not mistaken. it never ends lol
Is... is Cherry a redhead... cause she has the "hair/freckles"... and her name is Cherry.... hhhhh*how original*
Also as someone who is short, nothing enrages me more than the non-stop focus on an itsy bitsy teen tiny woman main character.
We love your reviews so much! Sorry you keep having to subject yourself to these terrible books, though. Your sacrifice is greatly appreciated.
The cut to the jar of... "honey" falling on Pooh Bear's head somehow hit me more viscerally than anything in the actual "dark romance".
I can just take some time to appreciate the effort she put into cutting out all the swear words for the whole 1hour long video like thank you for this much effort like THANK YOU
Doesn't really matter but I think Brownie is meant to be a Brownie Fairy without a name. Brownies are house fey, kind of like Dobby in Harry Potter
the 'island boys' lives rent free in my head
my absolute fav was hook...I love watching your reviews. Not only are they actually honest and not just gushing over badly written rubbish. But the humor is great and much needed from the ones i've watched so far.
“Zade?! Is that you?” Omg.. 😂🤣
-so this author is a fan of both Supernatural and Reign… Cass and Bash? Lort.
-Are we getting Vampires?!?
Castiel would never. (Unless Dean needed him to.)
Absolutely just the worst disguised smut I've ever seen. Just call your book smut and no one would care about the shoddy writing and nothing plot. Ya know? If your plot is 'how to get from sex scene A to sex scene B' then it's just porn. I wish authora would just own up to it and stop trying to be something they're not
I feel so bad for how much I laughed at this rant review 😂 you are amazing! And freaking hilarious! You are just awesome ❤
Your Winnie voice was spot on (probably not the authors idea…but how else do you read those lines?!)
You and withcindy are wonderful to listen to tear books apart
You have earned a subscriber from this video alone, bc I read this series and liked it for the sheer fact that I 100% didn't take it seriously XD like... I knew it was a terrible book when I went into it, and it fulfilled that lmaoooo
I know I'm 8 months late but after being recommended your video for the 3rd book I HAD to come here as I have read this one. You're so funny, my pelvic floor after 2 pregnancies can't take it iykyk 😂
Also, you taught me a couple of things, I really enjoy your sarcasm and how yoj analyze the stupid plot points that make no sense. Good job ❤
