write down every purchase and every dollar, everyday and calculate it every week then every month so i can track my spending habits and analyze which category i might over spending then i will evaluate the budget for the next month
Hmm.. like most people my relationship with money is irrational and emotional. So I started psyching myself up. I looked harder at the things I value and my dissonance. Then I made changing my behavior pleasureable and the consequences costly (pun intended). I also set a timer on my shopping apps lol! Most importantly, I began following your IG and TH-cam. I truly appreciate your transparency. You have been a great motivator and you help reinforce the best in us. Thank you so, so very much!
What a great video, Christina. I tend to apply the "crash diet" approach to money too. I panic whenever I spend and this really can be a barrier (in a similar but different way from being in debt). The reason I do this is because I had a fear of debt instilled into me big time by my parents and grandparents. That has made me so overly cautious with money that I get really anxious about spending anything at all. I have that voice (like Dave Ramsey) shouting in my ear whenever I spend anything that isn't an essential, such as groceries and essential beauty products etc. I think it's finding a healthy balance. I'm not there yet, but I'm trying to get better at getting that healthy balance and at accepting that I too will want a coffee and a croissant once in a while! Please keep up the great content. I'm so glad I subscribed to your channel.
I actually got a pay increase but I pretend I didn't. I went on a soft no-buy challenge with my cousin as well. She's a terrible accountability partner but knowing I need to potentially tell on myself makes me think twice before I buy things. Edit: oh and I got a Kakebo. It has the side effect of forcing me to go through my accounts and actually write stuff down, having too many things to write is stressful so it stops me spending.
Ever since my stress spending skyrocketed during the pandemic, I've been making lists of the things I've bought so that I'm reminded of what I'm glad I bought and what I regret spending on. Really reminds me to think before I go through with other purchases
There are so many ways to mange and prepare for relaxing future, we just always have to keep doing our best because whatever we plant now we will harvest later good or bad
Your advice videos are changing my life! I've been saving and I haven't shopped in almost 10 days. I know it doesn't seem like a lot but for me it is because I am a shopping addict. I HAD to spend money every day
The thing that helps me a lot is having someone who tells me not to buy something. It could be your friend, partner, parent, etc. Whenever I feel the urge to splurge, my partner listens to me, validates the product I'm passionate about, but ends the conversation with 'but you don't need that right now, so I wouldn't buy it if I were you'. It gets me out of the 'but I need it right now !!' mindset and I often don't end up buying it.
Having those people in your life are so important! It's amazing how if you let yourself think on a purchase for awhile, theres a good chance you'll be able to assess if its something you need right now. Glad you have a great financially minded support system in place! 😊
I used to chain-smoke, was overweight and I overspend. I quit smoking 5 years ago, I'm back into shape & maintaining it, I believe it will be the same with money, takes a few approaches and one day it clicks 🌟 Greatings from south of France ♥️
How cool to have YNAB as the sponsor! Congrats! My secret to getting good with money was prioritizing savings and debt payoff over spending, budgeting and tracking my spending!
“Money secrets that aren’t really secrets.” So true! It’s a few simple steps that take a personal goal, planning, a bit of discipline & a lot of self kindness to slowly build better financial habits. Great vid, Christina! :) Had me laughing at the ‘stop judging me, Dave’ part. 😂
You articulate so many things that are spot on. Thank you for your transparency and motivation. One thing that has helped me change the way I spend money is by waiting on purchases when it’s time to replace an item, versus excessive spending.
Hooray!!!! YNAB!!!! I love YNAB and I’m SO so happy that they sponsored this video! I’m still a spender and I’m still working improving, but YNAB has definitely helped to see what’s going on and we literally couldn’t function without it. I can’t imagine life without it. Great video!
I agree, Dave Ramsey can be a bit TOO intense about some things. I think if you're getting out of debt and doing a pretty aggressive, focused tackle on your debt, you are going to get stressed out more quickly. A coffee, a tea, or a croissant, or a dinner date out here and there can really help to take the pressure off, and remind you that you are still able to LIVE.
Clicked so fast!! You have been coming up with just the right videos at just the right time! Its always a “yes! This is what i needed” moment these days when i see your titles! And the editing only keeps getting better every time!
Your videos have been so helpful to me! They came at a time in my life that I was ready to make a change and receptive to it. As for Everydollar app, I think Dave Ramsey is kind of a jerk. I read a few of his things and decided he was just too preachy and patriarchal. But I like the Everydollar app, it's free and easy to understand. The app itself is just an excel tracking sheet, and basically value neutral. I don't associate it with his lectures and don't feel guilty when I record data on it. It's just a convenient way to capture information. I may try out the other app at a later date, but I think I'm too early in the game absorbing the information to switch right now. But that's not the point. The point is to say THANK YOU for helping me get started.
I think giving yourself grace during the first few months of budgetting is important. Things are going to be a bit dicey as you learn what you actually spend money on/where things need to be shuffled around
Can I just say, I've listened to a lot of budget videos on TH-cam, but your one seems to be the only one I find doable xxxxx thank you so much for making this video lovely xxxx much love xxx
Happy to hear you discovered Ynab. I needed to get rid of debt and covid made it really clear that I wanted to build an emergency savings fund of two to three months salary. Budgeting has really been helping me to achieve these goals and ynab makes budgeting and tracking my expenses a lot easier. I also am enjoying the age of money aspect. I keep watching that graph and am looking forward to the day my money is 30 days old as I believe thats a real game changer. So every time I want to make a purchase I ask myself do i really need it, how will it affect my money ageing goals and Ist it worth it? Then I wait a few days. Sometimes I conclude that an item is worth it but most of the time I find it’s not.
Oh my word...YNAB!! I have been a Quicken user for 25 years. It is a great tracker, but I need budget help, too. I had never heard of this before your video, and I am already doing a deep dive. I see this being life changing. Thank you!!!
I love following you on you tube and was excited to hear you talk about YNAB. I’ve been using YNAB for over a year and it has really made a difference in getting my spending under control. Yes, there is a bit of a learning curve, but so worth it! online tutorials are so helpful for learning the system😊
The more we talk about money and how it impacts our lives, the more we're allowing ourselves to truly live in confidence and wealth instead of living in fear or in a scarcity mindset. I think what you're sharing is so valuable and inspiring, Christina. Have you ever thought about becoming a finance counselor? 😊♥️
Great video Christina! What a great partnership in YNAB. So awesome when the sponsor fits your content so perfectly. Can you do a video about your time management/productivity? Maybe a part 2 to your bullet journal video? I find it amazing what fabulous content you put out while still working full time.
As you, COVID give me the motivation to do a budget and respect it …it’s begin to be my new obsession …not all good but working to find my way it’s a learning process. The retirement coming fast and I freaking out to get there really poor…so i have to change my relation with money and let go all the regrets for the past.
Also, cash-flowing everything has made a huge difference. Our mattress that I want to replace would have been a year ago if we were ok with payment plans. But when I have to hand over $1500 for a new mattress, I’m waiting until my current mattress is at the end of its life! Carries over to cars, furniture, etc.
ynab is absolutely AMAZING! and there are TONS of videos here on TH-cam to help people get an idea of how they can use it and set it up! 👏love how you are using it to ditch R*msey
Thanks for sharing - I have gotten so discouraged doing FPU. I'd set my budget and go oh, look I have $X in my account on payday so I can go ahead and pay bills a, b, & c then realize I cut myself short for say groceries or gas for the rest of the two week period because I forgot bill z was due too without having a good way to think about the timing of payments. I will definitely give this app a try! And it's reassuring to know I'm not the only spender that has felt like I just need to make more money (and I like your crash diet analogy - I don't think a single $20 dinner out will make or break me for the month).
I've been using YNAB going on 2 years, and I deff think its more flexible and customizable than a lot of other apps out their...and like you said more sustainable....After you finish paying off your debt (with whichever mindset/ideology/track) you're kinda like "now what?" and thats when YNAB really starts to shine...
YNAB completely changed my finances and my mindset around money. this year we got an unexpected 15k bill that we were able to cashflow with YNAB. it relieved a huge amount of stress (although it still sucked lol)
Hi Christina! What is your advice when you really mess up with spending and how to get your mind back on track to put it behind you and move forward and not dwell
I dwell a little bit but am learning to just keep going. It’s an opportunity to assess if what I overspent on is something I commonly purchase (ie maybe I need to add a line Lin the budget for it), or if it was a one-off then it’s something to learn from and keep going!
I am in still in process of figuring out our finances. Tried financial advisor who built customised excel sheet to manage our family spending and budget. That helped me understand on what we actually spending but did not help to create some finantial plan. Than i tried WBA - it is paid online program (based in America). I learned from them lot of great tips for managing money, for creating yearly budget, I even built my own yearly budget but... sticking with it is another thing 😁 I am improving slowly in managing our finances, but still not 100 percent there 😊
So awesome to see you wearing your Mom's Levi's. I think you look bombshell 🔥 also, in your most recent videos there's so much confidence, contentment and simplicity in the best sense, all of which kinda reminds me of Meghan Markle's strong and positive vibe. Hope you realize it's a compliment, as I obviously don't know how you feel about her :)
I use numeology. In our birth chart we all have a number, which tells us how we best support ourselves financially. The number is different for every person depending on the day you were born. I also look at my Human Design Chart. So yes, that´s my secret :)
I like to cherry pick the advice that I find useful. Dave Ramsey has some good points and a boatload plus some that I’m not in agreement with. I like YNAB’s disposition far better but the age your money thing doesn’t jive with my brain. My problem was discipline and I felt much better teaching myself with pride and failing too than letting any guru shame me.
Love it! 😊😘 my secret are 4 bancacounts (everyday, fun, saving/Invest and taxes and so) and i can only use the money in everyday and fun for holiday sport and so
I think it's important to have similar attitude towards spending and saving as your partner, when there is family, and also all this minimalism videos from you, or Signe Hansen ans some other great tubers taught me to ask myself do I really need something or it's just impulses
His plan really did change my life, but the more I learned about the man himself...he just kept breaking my heart 💔Love YNABs philosophy and approach for sure!
What’s a way you were able to change your relationship with money? 💸
write down every purchase and every dollar, everyday
and calculate it every week then every month
