    Glad I'm not the only one! That's exactly the sound mine makes. I've been removing it in post but would like to figure out how to eliminate it at the source. Now that I watched this I'll try it in some other spaces and see how it does. Thanks!

    Man, I know this video is a few years old but I want to say thank you for this video. I've spent countless hours of testing and research trying to figure out what was wrong with my setup and why there was a faint buzz in the background exactly like this. It seems I need a new mic. This could be an issue with any mic. I have had my client report this same buzzing noise with their Shure SM7B, their ATR2100X and their Blue Yeti. They all do it in certain environments. You take your chances with any mic.

    • @Hindsight101
      @Hindsight101  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is true but a lot of people use this mic because of the quality and cost. I also have an SM7B and doesn't produce this issue in the same environment, better build quality. So my whole point of the video is sometimes you lose out on features or quality for the price you pay.

    I fixed this by buying a higher quality XLR cable with good shielding (2534) by Mogami not all XLR cables are built equal in terms of interference with electrical cords or other things around the XLR I tore apart my old cable and found that the copper shielding was thin almost like several single strands of hair. Other alternatives include Canere 4e6s and even AUDIO BLAST HQ4

    20 year sound guy veteran. These loops are frequent. Two solutions that will work:
    1. What ever you have the mic plugged into (soundboard, computer, whatever), grab that thing's power line, and clip off the third ground prong. Do this at your own risk. I am not recommending this, just saying that if you do this, that will eliminate that buzz.
    2. Try plugging into to a different outlet on a different circuit. Of course this would require you to know which outlets are on which circuit, but the general rule is each room is it's own circuit. The real way to test it is to go to your circuit breaker box. Which ever outlet's lose power when you flip one switch those are all on one circuit. Just move your set up to a different circuit.

    My q2u's headphone jack is not functioning anymore in just a week. I can't monitor the audio through USB. Turns out the mic's USB output, headphone jack, and on/off switch are fragile. I advise you to never unplug your headphones and USB cable after you plug it in or you could purchase some extension cables for the mic so that you won't keep plugging it in.

    I'm having the same issue, and this video has been one of the only sources of information and affirmation of the problem. My Q2U works perfectly on the other side of town. It has this same buzzing issue in my home and two other homes in my neighborhood that I've tried. I've gotten so much useless advice and no solutions whatsoever. It's absolutely over the air EMI, nothing to do with hardware or anything physically connected to the mic. I'd love to know if there was a way to shield the mic to get it to work (but still to be able to use wi-fi).

    • @Hindsight101
      @Hindsight101  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a snippet from the website I posted in the description of the video:
      Question: "In one small area of my studio near my mains circuit breaker/electrical panel, I have some type of electrical interference and all my microphones except the Neumann mics have hum when turned in a certain direction. If I turn the mics 90 degrees, the hum disappears.
      The Neumann mics (U87s and U64s) have no hum in any direction and work fine. So, before I write to the other mic manufacturers, I want to ask you if you use a special kind of shielding in your mics that prevent this type of hum from electrical interference."
      Answer: The likely source of the problem is a hum field in your studio caused by the AC power lines.
      Any type of dynamic mic, like the Shure SM57 or SM58®, contains a voice coil that is very susceptible to picking up the hum field. Nothing can be added to these mics to control this.
      Some dynamic mics like the Shure SM7B contain an internal hum-bucking coil that reduces hum pick-up. Reduces, not eliminates. Other dynamic mics, like the Shure Beta 58A, have more effective shielding around the voice coil that also reduces hum. ALL dynamic mics will pick up this hum field to some extent.
      Condenser mics, like the Neumann's you have or the Shure KSM mics do not have voice coils. These mics will perform much better in a hum field. But many of these mics have output transformers that, like a voice coil, will also pick up the hum.
      If the hum field cannot be eliminated, stick with high-quality condenser mics with transformerless outputs. Shure KSM mics are condenser mics with transformerless outputs.

    I feel like I wasted money in buying this mic, i can't use it anywhere in my house to stream with a desktop, the buzz is so offending I've used USB and XLR, it definitely has to do with the circuitry I'm the house, i now use it as a spare for kareoke on my Bluetooth speaker that has XLR, really wanted to enjoy this mic

      You can buy adapters that will help with the interference

  • @SianaGearz
    @SianaGearz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So what have they managed to do wrong? Does the issue occur over XLR and USB both, or only over one of those connections? Normally on an XLR microphone, there's a connection from Pin1 XLR to the body, and from body to the ball head, this shields the microphone from e-fields. Furthermore neither Pin2 nor Pin3 of XLR can be connected to Pin1, else the shielding is partially defeated, the noise can couple through. Furthermore impedance from Pin2 to Pin1 and from Pin3 to Pin1 should be the same, otherwise also noise pickup can be induced.

      PS. I might give it a chance by swapping the usb cable, maybe there's the problem. I have to get another one like that first though.

      @@AhaOk2398 also have you tried to use XLR? I know that's not what you want to do but just trying to see if it's the mic or something else

      @@Hindsight101 I don't have any interface or know someone who has, I bought it purely as USB mic. I think I might order some cheap interface like Behringer UM2 and in case it doesn't help return it (in my country you can return what you bought during 30 days if you bought online). Thing is -- will such cheap interface help.

    Good video. I just received from BestBuy my Samson Q2U last night. In less than one day I came into a issue which puzzles me. I'll try a bulleted list of my issue below:
    1. Connected Mic to Samsung Galaxy Note 9 via Samsung's USB adapter.
    2. Mic worked awesome.
    3. Meanwhile, I plugged in earbuds through the Q2U's headphone jack while the mic is connected to the cell phone....I could hear myself with no latency through the Galaxy Note 9 just fine.
    4. No issues, I was able to hear myself through my headphones with no latency.
    5. I then connected the mic into a Samsung Notebook 9 Pro laptop.
    6. Plugged in headphones through the Samson Q2U's headphone jack.
    7. I heard myself just fine with no latency.
    8. Just out of curiosity, I launched Windows "Sound" from [Control Panel], the Sound applet that has the four tabs "Playback", "Recording", "Sounds" and "Communications".
    9. In the "Recording" tab, I right-clicked on the Samson's microphone setting and selected "Properties".
    10. I then selected the "Listen" tab.
    11. From here I placed a check inside the checkbox "Listen to this device" to see if the usual latency that Windows 10 provides was there. Indeed it was.
    12. I DESELECTED the checkbox "Listen to this device" so that I can return back to listening to my voice through the Q2U's headphone jack as before....and NOW I can NO LONGER hear my own voice coming through the Samson Q2U using the Samson's headphone jack.
    If I UNPLUG the Samson mic from the USB all together and then plug it back in, upon the Q2U "booting up" I can briefly hear my phone through its headphone jack for one second and then it disappears. This happens now even when I transfer the Q2U over to the Galaxy Note 9 device as opposed to experiencing this just on the Windows device, so it seems the symptom follows the hardware of the Q2U rather than stating it's a Windows 10 issue.
    No matter if I plug the Q2U via USB through a Windows laptop or another mobile device or a cell phone, etc.......when listening to through the Q2U's headphone jack I can briefly hear my voice and then it mutes.
    Yes, the on-device On/Off switch on the Q2U is set to on. I've played with that, too, in different variations, tried plugging in the mic in different orders-of-operation, etc. I still can no longer hear my own voice anymore at all through the Q2U headphone jack. The microphone itself still records just fine.
    And lastly, yes....the volume switch on the Q2U is also engaged to high to ensure I don't have the volume all the way down.
    Please help. I've only used this microphone literally less than 10 minutes out of the box. lol
    Thanks.

      Have you tried a different pair of headphones/earbuds?

      Also try slowly plugging in the headphones and see a what point, if you hear anything.

      Thank you. They actually work now by me having deleted the onboard USB drivers and reinstalling them. Weird, as the symptom still presents itself on the cell phone. But it's working now. I can hear myself in real time on the laptop. Thanks for being awesome.

      @@FunTimes.7 I don't know if its still relevant but you should not enable the 'listen to this device' in the recording tab but instead, on the playback tab of the Q2U

    I have to say that is a good mic but that little flaw is a problem.

      Entiendo su punto y podría haber incluido todos esos detalles y hacer el video mucho más largo. A los espectadores generalmente no les gustan los videos largos. No tiene que creer en mi palabra, pruébelo usted mismo. Quería compartir mis experiencias en caso de que otros tuvieran el mismo problema.
