I have a nearly 100 year old jade plant/tree with a trunk like an elephant leg. I rescued it from the last cattle ranch in our area of CA when the house was being bulldozed. That was quite a few years ago and it was close to 6 feet tall but I pruned it quite a bit in order to paint the house it's close to. They grow outside in So. CA and often they are used as bushes in landscaping here. It was very full, probably 3 or 4 feet wide and blooms heavily with hundreds of flowers every winter.
Wow! I've seen many videos and pictures over the years of jades growing outdoors in certain areas and I am extremely jealous. I wish I could have them outside here in Canada. It sure would be nice to see your Jade plant. Do you have an Instagram account or anything?

Shouldn't you use composted soil for this plant? (does Miracle Grow pay you to use their horrible products?) Anyway, great basic tips for transplanting, your recommending this 'soil' undermines your expertise-
So i have my grandmothers jade plant. Never knew what type it was and it’s never really been in a sunny area for over 5 years. I’m not good with plants and it was dying in the summer but now it’s fine and flowering. Still in the same location with not much sun. I found this video bc I noticed the flowers (1st time ever) and want to repot mine into a terracotta pot. And found your video very helpful. Thank you!
Gorgeous Jade plant! I use Organic Mechanics cacti/succulent soil and it’s yielded absolutely amazing results with all my plants. I had a 12+ year old Jade I got from my grandmother that looked nothing like yours. It ended up having severe root rot and large branches began to fall off. Now I have a ton of cuttings that I hope will root and grow happily in the right conditions so that the original plant it came from lives on!
That is so awesome. My grandfather had a jade plant and it reminds me of him everyday. I wish I could have gotten his plant before he passed away, but it is the memory that counts the most!
I have a variegated jade in a west window and it's doing fantastic! Has bright indirect light during the day with direct sun for a few hours in late afternoon and evening. It's still young, only about six inches tall, but has more than doubled in size since coming to live here last summer. I let it dry out before watering, then give it a good soaking. I only feed it half as often as the other plants and it seems to like that. I've also noticed that the more direct sun it gets, the more light colored 'stripes' it has. All in all, a beautiful sturdy little plantlet that I love! Thank you for the video... good information with an understandable presentation! I'll be back for more!

What a gorgeous Jade you have! I have a couple myself which I've been pruning them back to produce the Bonsai tree look. I feel a little as you said you did the first time you trimmed yours, I was so scared but I know I'll be happy w/the results and yeah, the cut stems grow back pretty quick anyway. I live in North Idaho and we have some dark winter days. Grow lights do work quite well with succulents. I currently have three beautiful jade plants and they definitely slow way down during the winter months so the watering also slows down. My succulents are currently quite happy with Bonsai Jack gritty mix. It has no peat moss. I add some coco coir to give It a bit more time to absorb the water but it doesn't hold the water like peat does. Thank you for this video. That is one gorgeous Jade!

I place a small patch of window screen mesh over the drain hole. Been doing that 25 plus years. No problems during this time. I also use packing peanuts for a bottom layer. Again, no problems to this point. I do this with all my outdoor potted plants also. Works for me. Love your Jade Plant. It’s huge! I killed my last one by never transplanting it. It finally gave up the ghost. Did save several cuttings from it so I now have 5 new Jades growing and about 12 new Jades my friends are growing. So it lives on. I’ll pay closer attention in the future. I am starting to use sand and perlite in my dirt barrel. I keep an old garbage can and mix two different potting soils, sand and perlite to the mix. There are the occasional tree bark pieces. A little decomposing never hurt anyone. This just works for me.
I love my Jade plant, it has survived years of neglect and is still going strong. I received it years ago, back then I was young and didn't look after it. It was kept on a windowsill and i only watered it about 2x per year. When i moved house it was kept in a dark room for 1 month and still survived. I'm now looking after it and it's doing incredibly well and growing. I've recently bought a couple for gifts.
...I just repotted my jade plant... First I did basically what you did I repotted the ball from the old pot into the new one and filled the new space with succulent specific soil. But I started having doubts so I looked up youTube clips about plant care without knowing the name of my plant and I'm worried I have now killed it. I repotted the lil guy again and this time gently "untangled" the root system from it's cramped up solid dirt ball from the original pot and I trimmed one or two small stringy roots that looked dead. The ends were all small and wiry and fuzzy which according to google searches meant a healthy plant. After shaking off 90% of the old soil around the roots I went to repot it with all new soil, trying to spread out the roots, and watered with about 1.5 cups of water and tapped the sides and pressed the top to try and get it more stable. After finding out the name of my plant and watching Jade specific care videos I'm pretty sure I did everything I'm not supposed to do 😭 is it going to make it what can I do should I re-pot it again without water or pressing down?
You are good either way....if it's not super root bound then I leave the roots intact. Lightly unraveling them is okay too. If you have seen any of my other videos, I have cut root systems of different plants in half (root pruning) and all have survived! After repotting a plant I will only water if it needs it. I have many more videos on jades and the way I know they need water is if the soil is dry and you can slightly bend the leaves. They should normally be firm and thick. How is your plant looking? Firm leaves, green....? Feel free to send a picture to my Instagram account (@everything_plants_ca) otherwise I'm sure it will be fine and just give it time to recover.

Well I was given 3 very small plants and 2 died right away. The one is hanging on. Maybe with help from videos like this with such great information it will live
Great tip about cactus mix. I killed way to many Jade Plant. My grandmother was from the north west as it sounds like you are. And she grew amazing plants. Such as a Jade Plant.
I have a jade plant of 8 yrs an yes it’s rather big it’s growing out side an it’s doing mighty fine I have never grown one inside it’s very hard it’s also corky trunk which I love 💕 thank you for sharing

I remember watching this in awe and wanting a large jade plant. Today, I'm the mother of two extra large jade plants. One is 15 one is 18. Massive jurassic roots, very healthy, lots of babies .. its like a forest. I'm in jade heaven. 😍🥰💞💓😁🥰😍💓💓💓
Wow what a beautiful ceramic pot and Jade😍😍😍I haven't done well with jade plants(only tried twice) , but I think it's a combination of the climate here (cold outside so cold draft if I open the window to air out), the AC heater dries the air, and I used a pot which I should have sterilized after the last plant was in it.. and I ended up over watering it...I'm dreaming of owning a beautiful Jade like the one you have!!! Next time I'll definitely try with terracotta pots!
I'm repotting my Jade today. Mine is roughly 20 years old and hasn't been repotted for about 10, going from a 12" pot going into a 16" pot. Got 4 bags of miracle grow cactus, a bag of miracle grow perlite and a bag of miracle grow orchid course mix. Mixed to perfection and a plastic stopper for the bottom. Wish me luck with my attempt.
@@EverythingPlants I have had a jae before but put it out in full sun , treated it like a desert cactus and fried it. On to round 2 - just a standard Ovata and going to treat it much better now!
Beautiful plant. I have a jade that's been a bit one step forward, two steps back for me. Like many, I overwatered it, then to save it from rotting I took cuttings from the healthy stems and basically started over. It's doing well, but I'm sure looking forward to it becoming a larger plant. I successfully pruned it to achieve some branching, I think following an earlier one of your videos!

I planted two tiny jade plant trunks a few years ago and i neglected all winter long didn't even water once. It never grew bigger or taller. This spring it suddenly started to quadruple in sizes so now i potted it and it looked beautiful on my computer desk.

A beautiful plant, a really lovely one! My experience with jades (i have quite a few of large one) taught me that they do like lower pots. In your case - I would just try to wash the old soil out and fill the same round pot with a new soil. I would also prune it - so there is less greenery at the bottom and it looks more like a tree. But that's me. I also am afraid to put jades in deep pots. Wide - yes, but not deep. Saying that - you obviously know better what is it that your pant needs.. 😊
Thanks for all that information. I am by no means an expert, but learn as I go. I am olay with a deeper pot because it is terracotta and won't remain wet for a long time. If it was a deeper plastic pot then no way would I be using it.

I did have the variegated Jade plant, but I actually sold it. 😬 I have too many Jade plants and had to get rid of a bunch. There are a few in my collection that I just couldn't part with....they meant too much to me. So the white and green jade had to go. The care is identical, but I found this one to be a bit slower growing. They are beautiful and definitely should be a head turner.

That is awesome. The thing i learned besides basic care is that they love to be pruned. Snip a bit off the top and watch them branch out (in the growing seasons).
You have a nice style of video making. ~ I try to avoid using pots shaped like that ceramic one, for the reasons that you pointed out. ~ It was a little amusing when your discussion of the ‘simple’ act of how to water a Jade got ‘complicated’. Watering plants correctly is easy.......if all the factors are taken into account! ~ A couple of months ago I posted a video on giant Jades blooming. You might enjoy it.
Just curious, after repotting, have you still noticed issues with water absorption? You should really try to remove as much of the old soil as you can before repotting. Otherwise, your water is just going to mainly run straight through. And your plant's roots will not get sufficient water. Always loosen root ball before repotting. And if possible spray out roots, removing as much old soil as possible. Then your plant can sit out of any soil for about a few days to allow the roots to air dry. That way, if you had any root breakage, they can dry and heal before repotting. And always wait for at least five days before watering after repotting. That way you aren't taking the risk of root rot.
I know this is 2 years old, but I'm hoping SOMEONE sees this ... How would you store this plant after cleaning the roots off and letting it dry off?? I'm very new to this and any good advice is very appreciated. I know it's a stretch since this is so old, but thank you in advance 🙌🏻

I do soak my terracotta pots. I guess that if you use an old terracotta pot you need to soak it in 1/4 cup of bleach for 5 gallons of water for 30 minutes. If there's build up on the outside you can make a paste of baking soda and powder mixture and apply it generously, and wipe it off with a sponge. Also, to properly water succulents in containers, keep a bare wood skewer or chopstick inserted all the way to the bottom of the pot. When you pull it out to check for dampness, if the skewer is dry it's time to water it. Kind of like checking a cake or bread for doneness.
Thank you for that great tip! This is why I love this channel and other plant pages....people are always sharing techniques they use. I do wash/clean off older terracotta pots prior to using them with new plants. I will typically scrub off the pot and then use a water/rubbing alcohol mixture to kill off anything living on the pot. I have used bleach as well. Thanks for the support on my channel!!!
New subscriber and thank you for the tips. I have no plants in terracotta but this inspired me to try repotting one of my medium size jades in a larger terracotta pot in spring. I'm a decades long jade owner with a couple huge jades whose soil is as you describe (compacted down and have to water weekly so they may not be retaining water too well). Their pots are large enough so I haven't felt a need to repot, but is it wise to lift out and spruce up with all new better soil come spring?
Hello Kim and thanks for subscribing. I normally don't take a plant out unless it is no longer growing well and then you can look at the roots. I've seen sites say that mature jades should be repotted with fresh soil every 4 to 5 years. If you do repot it then spring is the best time to do it.
What a beautiful jade! I didn't even know that they can get that big. I love them because they help absorb EMF rays. I have several and your tips were very helpful. I'd love to hear more about having ladybugs in the house with a lot of plants. :)
I am not too sure if the lady bugs did anything for pest control or not, but the kids sure liked finding them around the house lol They are supposed to consume soft bodied insects for their diet.
Don't be afraid! This will 100% benefit your plant in the long run. It may start to lose leaves like mine has. It is no longer absorbing the water that the roots need. What exactly are you afraid of? Maybe I can help you through this process?!?!
As long as you don't chop up the roots too much it should be fine. Keep me posted and don't be too scared. I hack up my plants all the time. The most recent one that made me so nervous is my tetrasperma.
If you get dried out soil that won't take water you can mix in some surfactant or some dish detergent that is not of the anti-bacteria kind and it will help re-hydrate the soil.
I am so jealous right now. I have purchased about three jade plants. They don't look as good as yours. I guess I must wait a few years for them to develop.

Prune it! Mine used to grow with all the branches drooping over the side of the pot. I pruned mine and it started to grow upwards like how I wanted it. Be sure to only prune it when it is actively growing. I started with any branch that was growing downwards got cut off. I once found a lot of them at a store called Tuesday morning. Hope you have one. They don’t sell online unfortunately. The other store are the neighborhood Ace hardware stores, they are expensive.
Everything Plants I do have a jade in my collection and it’s doing very well. Believe it or not a Jade was the first plant I ever had and I managed to kill it by underwatering it! Looking back it was the same problem as yours, the soil was too compact and no water was getting to the roots but also I just didn’t know any better.

Now that I have that pot of jade all your jade videos are popping up and this one made me laugh because that pencil was around 2 years ago :D It has no eraser now and is a lot shorter, but it's been there through all the changes (just kidding im sure you have more than one). Also, your brasil was such a baby!!!! So cute!! Crazy to see your plant space then and now :O Do you have a "how to seperate jade plants" video? There are six in my pot and they are all planted kind of along the edges but they are solidly tangled all the way through as I can't even get the moisture meter in LOL No signs of rot but I would kinda like to seperate them instead of having stone's hendge of jade
That's pretty crazy to see the basement when I first started compared to now. Unfortunately, I don't have a video on separating Jade's but I would assume it wouldn't be too difficult. Are you wanting to separate the stems?

Your jade plant is beautiful. I had a jade plant and it developed root rot after several years. So I started another one from the clippings. I have some trailing jade, weeping jade plants. Will these grow stems?
Yes. I mean the thick woody stems. I've ordered and received several succulents from Mountain Crest Gardens. I ordered a tray of 25 varieties of succulents, but I couldn't figure out which succulents were which by the chart they included in the tray. Also, I ordered some from Amazon. I had a birthday and Mountain Crest Gardens gave me a special. I ordered just a few more and they came with labeled names. I've so many now that I'm trying to figure out how to plant them. I'm running out of terracotta pots. I've thought about dish gardens. Also, I have a wide variety of other plants. I don't have a grow light, but I've placed them in south/east windows. I inherited my grandma's peanut catus. She said to place them in a north window. What I thought was a north window isn't really north. I've propagated them and they fill up the window sill. I give them away to the special people who are in my life. I guess that I'll just Google it. I've got a lot of trailing plants that I'd like to hang or sit on a high shelf. I've even thought about using Commander Hooks or small nails and have them climb on the wall. Are there some plants that you can't grow? I'm not able to grow African Violets, even though my maternal grandmother was very successful, Fiddle Leaf Figs and some plants your not supposed to kill, Sansevierias.
Beautiful plant. About how many cuttings make up that plant? I have quite a few 4- 6 inch tall rooted jades and thought about putting them all in one pot. Not sure if that's a good or bad idea. What's your thought? If yes, what would be the maximum number to combine?
I think there is about 12 separate stems in this pot. You can take any amount you like and I think they will be okay. Just remember that eventually these plants get pretty large lol. You can always cut them back or separate them down the road if you don't like the way it looks. Thanks for watching and hope to see you back!
I have a jade plant that I’ve had for about 8yrs. Unfortunately I knew nothing about pruning it and whilst it’s massive it has its branches bending down over the pot in all directions and then bending again upwards. They must be about 40-50cm if straightened. I watched your pruning video and am wondering if I should hard prune to make it grow straight. I also use a watering globe and it’s grown so much in the last year using it, it’s also on a frosted south facing window. What do you think I should do, small prune or hard prune? Your plant there is amazing!,
That is completely up to you. The hard prune was the scariest thing I've done to a plant, but good thing jades are so resilient. The rule of thumb I used was to prune off anything growing downwards. Prune the amount you feel comfortable with. You can always cut more, but once you cut you can't take it back lol
My large jade is suffering. I can see it on the leaves - squishy, white spotted, and the soil is as you described. I planned to repot so appreciate your video! Silly question... what did you do with that rock? I suspect you used it as a stopper at the base of your terra cotta pot. Wouldn't that prevent drainage and cause root rot? I think Jades can endure lack of light pretty well. I like in the UK which means almost no light during winter and I have had mine for 2+ years and she's going strong. I have no grow lights.
Jades and most other succulents will grow slower and stretch out if not getting enough light. That is awesome to hear that yours are doing so well....I'd love to see a picture of your plants. Take care.
I just want the whole root system out of my garden! Any ideas of how to remove it, and what with would be great. It's been in 16 years, so it was fairly high!

I didn’t know you can’t put rocks at the bottom.. 😩 I repotted all my jade yesterday and they all (7 containers! Gah) have one layer of rocks at the bottom- not very deep at all and carefully placed to not block any draino age holes. Now that I know you aren’t supposed to do that… would you please recommend either pulling them all up and redoing it (nervous for the shock on them and it’s a lot to do over..) or leave it for now and replant in a year and skip the rocks then?? I had originally found your page to see what you suggest for watering after replanted pots. Online mostly says don’t water them for around a week after repotting- and one said do water so I wonder what you think?? Hope you see this 🤞🏼 and thanks for your help and time!
Hello Dinachka. Yours will be fine as long as there is drain holes....not to worry. I only water them if they need it and that includes repotting, otherwise I just leave them alone. I hope this helps! 7 containers of jades....you sound like me 😂
Great question and the short answer is I probably should have chipped away at more of the soil. I did remove some to the soil on the bottom and I removed a lot of those rocks off camera. I also didn't want to lose or disturb the structure of the plant. The roots on the bottom were free and untangled, so I figured I would just leave it alone. Kind of like a risk vs reward decision. I repotted mine and did remove a lot of the soil and believe me, it was a big mistake. The weight of the plant just made it impossible for the soil to hold it in place. It took months and a lot of strings/sticks to get it to stay up straight but it never was the same.

Trying to repot my big baby now.. as some of her leaves were getting very light green and too much shedding. Moved her to a better window and now transferring to a 50L pot. .. this is really hard work Got new compost, etc. Now I'm trying my best to follow your instructions
Don’t water them too much...it’s getting tall faster but not pretty... because of a long gap in the stem every leaves growing....just water it if you touch the top of the soil dry...my mother in law have 10 years old jade plant before she died in 2006...when I came here 2016 I cut some branch and planted it ...now I have a lot all of my windows...very easy to grow only leave can grow too just put on the soil and spray just to moist...or simple just put it on the top of the soil...and it will grow...
Did you water it after repotting? I've heard that you shouldn't after repotting, but I wonder if that applies to my case. I got my Jade plant a few months ago and I've noticed the soil was always very dry and clumped together. About a month ago I tried to aerate it but I guess it did nothing because multiple leaves are very pliable and a bit droopy now. I want to replace the soil tomorrow and I'm thinking I SHOULD water it at the same time because of the state that it's in. What would you recommend?
Hello. I lightly watered the top of the soil mainly to let the soil settle. I will give it a good soaking in a few days. I would maybe try and loosen up some soil or enough that there is roots lose on the bottom. I didn't show it very well in the video, but I did untangle the some roots at the bottom. Once it is in a slightly larger pot the roots will search out and grow. Does this help?
Mine has lost a few leaves so far, but unfortunately I don't have any solid advice. Make sure it gets a bright spot in your house and only water when the soil is dry.

Hi My Jade is about 35 yrs old, and alot of sticky drips are coming out of the leaves, what does that mean? I plan on repotting it in the summer, and let it enjoy my back deck. Its very big and heavy.
How do I know if it needs water? The symptoms for a dry plant are similar to those of a overwatered one, repotting it would be a huge undertaking, the plant is 20 years old and last time I changed the soil was about 5 years ago

Hello! I don't know if it is noticeable in the video, but this new pot is slightly wider than the previous one and much deeper. It should have plenty of room to grow. It should be okay for the next few years and I'll reassess the need for a larger pot in the future. What size pot do you have your Jade in?
@@EverythingPlants My jade pot is 15”w x 11” tall. There’s about 3” between the trunks and the edge of the pot. Is that good? Mine isn’t as dense as yours, but has thicker trunks. I’ve never really pruned it bc I’m scared! But, I have taken clippings to start new jades. It even flowered this Winter! Mine is south facing too. I live in Alberta where we have alot of sun, but cold winters. Should I think about re-potting mine to help it grow bigger?

I got a cutting of a jade as a housewarming gift in July 2019 from my great-grandmother's plant (it's at least 30 years old). It was growing well (albeit a bit leggy) for about a year or so and is at least a foot long now, but I noticed the growth slowed and I started to get a fungus knat problem this autumn after I moved home and no longer had a location to put it with decent sunlight. FYI, I'm based on the south-coast of the UK and live in an apartment where all of my windows are north-facing, so it's slim pickings here!
I tried repotting it twice recently - once in December into some cactus & succulent soil, and then again a fortnight ago once I found the knat problem persisted into the new media (which clearly wasn't as well-draining as advertised) and I wanted to start afresh with a new mix with perlite & grit added and in a terracotta pot with a drainage hole. In between these two repotting sessions I had also attempted a rather desperate knat culling using diatomaceous earth (where I removed some layers of soil, sprinkled in some of the earth, then used a plastic spoon to work it into the soil below and repeated this as I replenished the soil up to the surface). I have now discovered that in doing this, I severely damaged some of the roots - there's only around 1/2-1/3 of the roots left! I'm devastated.
I also realised that I stupidly watered the jade immediately after repotting (both times) so some of the older leaves have begun to droop and lose their shine, as well as feel slightly spongey compared to a new baby jade I bought myself last week.
Do you have any advice as to how I can help it recover? I think the leaves are waterlogged and the plant is in dire need of light, so I've bought a full-spectrum LED grow light and am planning on forgoing any watering for at least a month. Other than that, I have no clue what else to do! I know there is always the option to prune off all the branches and propagate these into a totally new plant arrangement, but I'm reluctant to do this unless totally necessary given the sentimental value of the plant.
Sorry to ramble, just finding myself turn into a crazy plant lady with each day since I realised about the damage I caused. Again, I'll appreciate any info you can offer. Take care! 🙂
i repotted my jade plant today and i wish I saw this video beforehand! I think the terracotta pot I selected is too big/deep and I'm afraid to repot it a second time into a smaller pot. I'm wondering if I just water it less frequently, and make this the soil dries out -- that the larger/deeper terracotta pot it is currently in will be okay? Do you have any recommendations? I've killed a few in NYC indoors and finally got it. I brought it with me when I moved to California. Doing well indoors so much I had to prune it and have a second one. I came here because I inherited an outdoor jade. It's old, not very bushy but the soil is rock hard and I'm afraid to repot it. It gets so much sun the leaves are mainly red. It needs pruning badly but very hesitant to trim off anything because the stems aren't very thick to cut from. Any thoughts?
Hello David. I think you are putting off the inevitable....REPOTTING! HAHA I think some fresh well draining soil will do wonders for the plant. Is it just too large to make it an easy pot? Get some help if needed, but I think this is what you need to do before the seasons change and the growth slows.

I need some advice. Im trying to repot my jade plant, because it was in a tiny pot. BUT no mater the size of the pot I chose, the plant keeps falling out of the pot. It doesnt stay under the soil, it falls out. My plant is kind of growing on the side & not vertically (I think it lacked water at some point). it right next to a window, and its growing very fast.. but how can I make it stay in a new pot (I put rocks on top of the soil to keep the plant in, but it is not a good solution, makes mold)
That is a frustrating situation. If the stems are flopped over then most likely they were too heavy or grew too quickly. It is very difficult to give any advice without seeing the plant, so feel free to send a picture to my Instagram account everything_plants_ca otherwise I think you are left to try pruning or using stakes to prop up those stems. i noticed this morning that my potted jade plant has moss on the surface of the soil. I only water it weekly, it's located beside my west window. is it bad or good?
A west window is good for a jade. Does the soil you use mix in moss? It should be okay as long as you let the soil dry out completely and be sure to check the lower soil.
Thanks Eleni! I think i gave it a bit of water as I know it definitely needed it. I have read that try not to water immediately after repottong to give a chance for damaged roots to heal. But I would say that if it needs water then definitely give it a bit. I'm not a professional, but this is simply just my opinion on what I would do.
I was carrying some fencing across the back yard and I tripped and some of the fencing fell onto the second huge jade plant I have,there is now a rip near the base of it and I just feel horrible. Is there any way to help support it
I hope you are okay as well..... I am not too sure if you can secure it back into place or not. You might be better off removing it and letting the end harden over then stick it back into the soil. I am probably not the best person to be asking because this has never happened to me before.
Hi! I just potted a small cutting about 3 weeks ago.. i observed the leaves have brown/black small scabs (it seems like oedema to me ) can you please suggest me something so that i can save my plant? 3 leaves have fallen already I’m scared to lose anymore :(
I have a nearly 100 year old jade plant/tree with a trunk like an elephant leg. I rescued it from the last cattle ranch in our area of CA when the house was being bulldozed. That was quite a few years ago and it was close to 6 feet tall but I pruned it quite a bit in order to paint the house it's close to. They grow outside in So. CA and often they are used as bushes in landscaping here. It was very full, probably 3 or 4 feet wide and blooms heavily with hundreds of flowers every winter.
Wow! I've seen many videos and pictures over the years of jades growing outdoors in certain areas and I am extremely jealous. I wish I could have them outside here in Canada.

When using decorative pots with bodies wider than the rim, I always pot into a smaller pot that slides down in the pretty one - except when I don't
I always knew if it got large enough that I'd just break the pot.

So i have my grandmothers jade plant. Never knew what type it was and it’s never really been in a sunny area for over 5 years. I’m not good with plants and it was dying in the summer but now it’s fine and flowering. Still in the same location with not much sun.

Gorgeous Jade plant! I use Organic Mechanics cacti/succulent soil and it’s yielded absolutely amazing results with all my plants.
I had a 12+ year old Jade I got from my grandmother that looked nothing like yours. It ended up having severe root rot and large branches began to fall off. Now I have a ton of cuttings that I hope will root and grow happily in the right conditions so that the original plant it came from lives on!
That is so awesome. My grandfather had a jade plant and it reminds me of him everyday. I wish I could have gotten his plant before he passed away, but it is the memory that counts the most!
I have a variegated jade in a west window and it's doing fantastic! Has bright indirect light during the day with direct sun for a few hours in late afternoon and evening. It's still young, only about six inches tall, but has more than doubled in size since coming to live here last summer. I let it dry out before watering, then give it a good soaking. I only feed it half as often as the other plants and it seems to like that. I've also noticed that the more direct sun it gets, the more light colored 'stripes' it has. All in all, a beautiful sturdy little plantlet that I love!

I live in North Idaho and we have some dark winter days. Grow lights do work quite well with succulents. I currently have three beautiful jade plants and they definitely slow way down during the winter months so the watering also slows down. My succulents are currently quite happy with Bonsai Jack gritty mix. It has no peat moss. I add some coco coir to give It a bit more time to absorb the water but it doesn't hold the water like peat does. Thank you for this video. That is one gorgeous Jade!

I place a small patch of window screen mesh over the drain hole. Been doing that 25 plus years. No problems during this time. I also use packing peanuts for a bottom layer. Again, no problems to this point. I do this with all my outdoor potted plants also. Works for me. Love your Jade Plant. It’s huge! I killed my last one by never transplanting it. It finally gave up the ghost. Did save several cuttings from it so I now have 5 new Jades growing and about 12 new Jades my friends are growing. So it lives on. I’ll pay closer attention in the future. I am starting to use sand and perlite in my dirt barrel. I keep an old garbage can and mix two different potting soils, sand and perlite to the mix. There are the occasional tree bark pieces. A little decomposing never hurt anyone. This just works for me.

I learned it the hard way putting rocks at the bottoms doesn't help. Very good video, I like jade a lot.
Which plant did you lose?
I love my Jade plant, it has survived years of neglect and is still going strong. I received it years ago, back then I was young and didn't look after it. It was kept on a windowsill and i only watered it about 2x per year. When i moved house it was kept in a dark room for 1 month and still survived. I'm now looking after it and it's doing incredibly well and growing. I've recently bought a couple for gifts.

...I just repotted my jade plant... First I did basically what you did I repotted the ball from the old pot into the new one and filled the new space with succulent specific soil. But I started having doubts so I looked up youTube clips about plant care without knowing the name of my plant and I'm worried I have now killed it. I repotted the lil guy again and this time gently "untangled" the root system from it's cramped up solid dirt ball from the original pot and I trimmed one or two small stringy roots that looked dead. The ends were all small and wiry and fuzzy which according to google searches meant a healthy plant. After shaking off 90% of the old soil around the roots I went to repot it with all new soil, trying to spread out the roots, and watered with about 1.5 cups of water and tapped the sides and pressed the top to try and get it more stable. After finding out the name of my plant and watching Jade specific care videos I'm pretty sure I did everything I'm not supposed to do 😭 is it going to make it what can I do should I re-pot it again without water or pressing down?
You are good either way....if it's not super root bound then I leave the roots intact. Lightly unraveling them is okay too. If you have seen any of my other videos, I have cut root systems of different plants in half (root pruning) and all have survived!
After repotting a plant I will only water if it needs it. I have many more videos on jades and the way I know they need water is if the soil is dry and you can slightly bend the leaves. They should normally be firm and thick.

Yes, just snip off a branch and most people say to let it callous over for a couple days then literally make a home and stick it in the soil!

Wow what a beautiful ceramic pot and Jade😍😍😍I haven't done well with jade plants(only tried twice) , but I think it's a combination of the climate here (cold outside so cold draft if I open the window to air out), the AC heater dries the air, and I used a pot which I should have sterilized after the last plant was in it.. and I ended up over watering it...I'm dreaming of owning a beautiful Jade like the one you have!!! Next time I'll definitely try with terracotta pots!
Hello. Just make sure it get plenty of light, in a well draining soil and don't over water.
I'm repotting my Jade today. Mine is roughly 20 years old and hasn't been repotted for about 10, going from a 12" pot going into a 16" pot. Got 4 bags of miracle grow cactus, a bag of miracle grow perlite and a bag of miracle grow orchid course mix. Mixed to perfection and a plastic stopper for the bottom. Wish me luck with my attempt.

Beautiful plant. I have a jade that's been a bit one step forward, two steps back for me. Like many, I overwatered it, then to save it from rotting I took cuttings from the healthy stems and basically started over. It's doing well, but I'm sure looking forward to it becoming a larger plant. I successfully pruned it to achieve some branching, I think following an earlier one of your videos!

I planted two tiny jade plant trunks a few years ago and i neglected all winter long didn't even water once. It never grew bigger or taller. This spring it suddenly started to quadruple in sizes so now i potted it and it looked beautiful on my computer desk.

A beautiful plant, a really lovely one! My experience with jades (i have quite a few of large one) taught me that they do like lower pots.
In your case - I would just try to wash the old soil out and fill the same round pot with a new soil. I would also prune it - so there is less greenery at the bottom and it looks more like a tree. But that's me. I also am afraid to put jades in deep pots. Wide - yes, but not deep. Saying that - you obviously know better what is it that your pant needs.. 😊
Thanks for all that information. I am by no means an expert, but learn as I go. I am olay with a deeper pot because it is terracotta and won't remain wet for a long time. If it was a deeper plastic pot then no way would I be using it.

I did have the variegated Jade plant, but I actually sold it. 😬 I have too many Jade plants and had to get rid of a bunch. There are a few in my collection that I just couldn't part with....they meant too much to me. So the white and green jade had to go. The care is identical, but I found this one to be a bit slower growing. They are beautiful and definitely should be a head turner.

That is awesome. The thing i learned besides basic care is that they love to be pruned. Snip a bit off the top and watch them branch out (in the growing seasons).

You have a nice style of video making. ~ I try to avoid using pots shaped like that ceramic one, for the reasons that you pointed out. ~ It was a little amusing when your discussion of the ‘simple’ act of how to water a Jade got ‘complicated’. Watering plants correctly is easy.......if all the factors are taken into account! ~ A couple of months ago I posted a video on giant Jades blooming. You might enjoy it.

Just curious, after repotting, have you still noticed issues with water absorption? You should really try to remove as much of the old soil as you can before repotting. Otherwise, your water is just going to mainly run straight through. And your plant's roots will not get sufficient water. Always loosen root ball before repotting. And if possible spray out roots, removing as much old soil as possible. Then your plant can sit out of any soil for about a few days to allow the roots to air dry. That way, if you had any root breakage, they can dry and heal before repotting. And always wait for at least five days before watering after repotting. That way you aren't taking the risk of root rot.
I know this is 2 years old, but I'm hoping SOMEONE sees this ... How would you store this plant after cleaning the roots off and letting it dry off?? I'm very new to this and any good advice is very appreciated. I know it's a stretch since this is so old, but thank you in advance 🙌🏻

I do soak my terracotta pots. I guess that if you use an old terracotta pot you need to soak it in 1/4 cup of bleach for 5 gallons of water for 30 minutes. If there's build up on the outside you can make a paste of baking soda and powder mixture and apply it generously, and wipe it off with a sponge. Also, to properly water succulents in containers, keep a bare wood skewer or chopstick inserted all the way to the bottom of the pot. When you pull it out to check for dampness, if the skewer is dry it's time to water it. Kind of like checking a cake or bread for doneness.

I do wash/clean off older terracotta pots prior to using them with new plants. I will typically scrub off the pot and then use a water/rubbing alcohol mixture to kill off anything living on the pot. I have used bleach as well.

I'm a decades long jade owner with a couple huge jades whose soil is as you describe (compacted down and have to water weekly so they may not be retaining water too well). Their pots are large enough so I haven't felt a need to repot, but is it wise to lift out and spruce up with all new better soil come spring?
Hello Kim and thanks for subscribing. I normally don't take a plant out unless it is no longer growing well and then you can look at the roots. I've seen sites say that mature jades should be repotted with fresh soil every 4 to 5 years. If you do repot it then spring is the best time to do it.
What a beautiful jade! I didn't even know that they can get that big. I love them because they help absorb EMF rays. I have several and your tips were very helpful. I'd love to hear more about having ladybugs in the house with a lot of plants. :)
I am not too sure if the lady bugs did anything for pest control or not, but the kids sure liked finding them around the house lol They are supposed to consume soft bodied insects for their diet.

Don't be afraid! This will 100% benefit your plant in the long run. It may start to lose leaves like mine has. It is no longer absorbing the water that the roots need. What exactly are you afraid of? Maybe I can help you through this process?!?!

If you get dried out soil that won't take water you can mix in some surfactant or some dish detergent that is not of the anti-bacteria kind and it will help re-hydrate the soil.

These are typically found in sandy type soils. I'm not too sure how it would work with just sand, but you could sure give it a try!

Prune it! Mine used to grow with all the branches drooping over the side of the pot. I pruned mine and it started to grow upwards like how I wanted it. Be sure to only prune it when it is actively growing. I started with any branch that was growing downwards got cut off.

I once found a lot of them at a store called Tuesday morning. Hope you have one. They don’t sell online unfortunately. The other store are the neighborhood Ace hardware stores, they are expensive.

Everything Plants I do have a jade in my collection and it’s doing very well. Believe it or not a Jade was the first plant I ever had and I managed to kill it by underwatering it! Looking back it was the same problem as yours, the soil was too compact and no water was getting to the roots but also I just didn’t know any better.

Now that I have that pot of jade all your jade videos are popping up and this one made me laugh because that pencil was around 2 years ago :D It has no eraser now and is a lot shorter, but it's been there through all the changes (just kidding im sure you have more than one). Do you have a "how to seperate jade plants" video? There are six in my pot and they are all planted kind of along the edges but they are solidly tangled all the way through as I can't even get the moisture meter in LOL No signs of rot but I would kinda like to seperate them instead of having stone's hendge of jade

Do you mean stems as in the thick woody stems? I'm honestly not too sure with those trailing/weeping jades.
Yes. I mean the thick woody stems. I've ordered and received several succulents from Mountain Crest Gardens. I ordered a tray of 25 varieties of succulents, but I couldn't figure out which succulents were which by the chart they included in the tray. Also, I ordered some from Amazon. I had a birthday and Mountain Crest Gardens gave me a special. I ordered just a few more and they came with labeled names. I've so many now that I'm trying to figure out how to plant them. I'm running out of terracotta pots. I've thought about dish gardens. Also, I have a wide variety of other plants. I don't have a grow light, but I've placed them in south/east windows. I inherited my grandma's peanut catus. She said to place them in a north window. What I thought was a north window isn't really north. I've propagated them and they fill up the window sill. I give them away to the special people who are in my life. I guess that I'll just Google it. I've got a lot of trailing plants that I'd like to hang or sit on a high shelf. I've even thought about using Commander Hooks or small nails and have them climb on the wall. Are there some plants that you can't grow? I'm not able to grow African Violets, even though my maternal grandmother was very successful, Fiddle Leaf Figs and some plants your not supposed to kill, Sansevierias.

I have quite a few 4- 6 inch tall rooted jades and thought about putting them all in one pot. Not sure if that's a good or bad idea. What's your thought? If yes, what would be the maximum number to combine?
I think there is about 12 separate stems in this pot. You can take any amount you like and I think they will be okay. Just remember that eventually these plants get pretty large lol. You can always cut them back or separate them down the road if you don't like the way it looks. Thanks for watching and hope to see you back!

I have a jade plant that I’ve had for about 8yrs. Unfortunately I knew nothing about pruning it and whilst it’s massive it has its branches bending down over the pot in all directions and then bending again upwards. They must be about 40-50cm if straightened. I watched your pruning video and am wondering if I should hard prune to make it grow straight. I also use a watering globe and it’s grown so much in the last year using it, it’s also on a frosted south facing window. What do you think I should do, small prune or hard prune? Your plant there is amazing!,
That is completely up to you. The hard prune was the scariest thing I've done to a plant, but good thing jades are so resilient. The rule of thumb I used was to prune off anything growing downwards. Prune the amount you feel comfortable with. You can always cut more, but once you cut you can't take it back lol
My large jade is suffering. I can see it on the leaves - squishy, white spotted, and the soil is as you described. I planned to repot so appreciate your video! Silly question... what did you do with that rock? I suspect you used it as a stopper at the base of your terra cotta pot. Wouldn't that prevent drainage and cause root rot? I think Jades can endure lack of light pretty well. I like in the UK which means almost no light during winter and I have had mine for 2+ years and she's going strong. I have no grow lights.
Jades and most other succulents will grow slower and stretch out if not getting enough light. That is awesome to hear that yours are doing so well....I'd love to see a picture of your plants. Take care.

Hello Chelsea. If this were my plant I would repot it first, let it establish itself and adjust to its new pot and then maybe in a month or so do some pruning. I am not an expert, but this is what I would do.

I didn’t know you can’t put rocks at the bottom.. 😩 I repotted all my jade yesterday and they all (7 containers! Gah) have one layer of rocks at the bottom- not very deep at all and carefully placed to not block any draino age holes. Now that I know you aren’t supposed to do that… would you please recommend either pulling them all up and redoing it (nervous for the shock on them and it’s a lot to do over..) or leave it for now and replant in a year and skip the rocks then??
I had originally found your page to see what you suggest for watering after replanted pots. Online mostly says don’t water them for around a week after repotting- and one said do water so I wonder what you think??

Hello Dinachka. Yours will be fine as long as there is drain holes....not to worry. I only water them if they need it and that includes repotting, otherwise I just leave them alone. I hope this helps!

You said the soil in the old pot was so hard and compacted. I was surprised to see you didn’t remove more of the old soil before repotting. How come?
Great question and the short answer is I probably should have chipped away at more of the soil. I did remove some to the soil on the bottom and I removed a lot of those rocks off camera. I also didn't want to lose or disturb the structure of the plant. The roots on the bottom were free and untangled, so I figured I would just leave it alone. Kind of like a risk vs reward decision. Hope this helps....LOL

I repotted mine and did remove a lot of the soil and believe me, it was a big mistake. The weight of the plant just made it impossible for the soil to hold it in place. It took months and a lot of strings/sticks to get it to stay up straight but it never was the same.

Don’t water them too much...it’s getting tall faster but not pretty... because of a long gap in the stem every leaves growing....just water it if you touch the top of the soil dry...my mother in law have 10 years old jade plant before she died in 2006...when I came here 2016 I cut some branch and planted it ...now I have a lot all of my windows...very easy to grow only leave can grow too just put on the soil and spray just to moist...or simple just put it on the top of the soil...and it will grow...
Did you water it after repotting? I've heard that you shouldn't after repotting, but I wonder if that applies to my case.
I got my Jade plant a few months ago and I've noticed the soil was always very dry and clumped together. About a month ago I tried to aerate it but I guess it did nothing because multiple leaves are very pliable and a bit droopy now. I want to replace the soil tomorrow and I'm thinking I SHOULD water it at the same time because of the state that it's in. What would you recommend?
Hello. I lightly watered the top of the soil mainly to let the soil settle. I will give it a good soaking in a few days.
I would maybe try and loosen up some soil or enough that there is roots lose on the bottom. I didn't show it very well in the video, but I did untangle the some roots at the bottom. Once it is in a slightly larger pot the roots will search out and grow. Does this help?
Not one leaf dropped off. Beautiful plant. Mine sheds alot. My moms is shedding so scarily and it used to be so big like yours. Any advice?
Mine has lost a few leaves so far, but unfortunately I don't have any solid advice. Make sure it gets a bright spot in your house and only water when the soil is dry.

Hi My Jade is about 35 yrs old, and alot of sticky drips are coming out of the leaves, what does that mean? I plan on repotting it in the summer, and let it enjoy my back deck. Its very big and heavy.
Sticky leaves can mean mealybugs are present. Look closely for these bugs and treat immediately if you find them.
It is so healthy! Mine keeps getting mealy bugs 🥴 the only thing working is to spay them off with water and alcohol. Any suggestions?
The only other suggestion that I would do is change out the soil and maybe spray it down again.
I’ve heard that sprinkling ground cinnamon on the soil helps!

How do I know if it needs water? The symptoms for a dry plant are similar to those of a overwatered one, repotting it would be a huge undertaking, the plant is 20 years old and last time I changed the soil was about 5 years ago

Hello! I don't know if it is noticeable in the video, but this new pot is slightly wider than the previous one and much deeper. It should have plenty of room to grow. It should be okay for the next few years and I'll reassess the need for a larger pot in the future.
What size pot do you have your Jade in?
@@EverythingPlants My jade pot is 15”w x 11” tall. There’s about 3” between the trunks and the edge of the pot. Is that good? Mine isn’t as dense as yours, but has thicker trunks. I’ve never really pruned it bc I’m scared! But, I have taken clippings to start new jades. It even flowered this Winter! Mine is south facing too. I live in Alberta where we have alot of sun, but cold winters. Should I think about re-potting mine to help it grow bigger?
Submerge your pot in water till soil gets soft . Plant comes out easy .

Hi! I have a bit of a situation with one of my jade plants and am wondering if you can help. I've gone on a total binge of your jade videos since realising all of my mistakes and your plants all look so healthy, so any help or advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated!
I got a cutting of a jade as a housewarming gift in July 2019 from my great-grandmother's plant (it's at least 30 years old). It was growing well (albeit a bit leggy) for about a year or so and is at least a foot long now, but I noticed the growth slowed and I started to get a fungus knat problem this autumn after I moved home and no longer had a location to put it with decent sunlight. FYI, I'm based on the south-coast of the UK and live in an apartment where all of my windows are north-facing, so it's slim pickings here!
I tried repotting it twice recently - once in December into some cactus & succulent soil, and then again a fortnight ago once I found the knat problem persisted into the new media (which clearly wasn't as well-draining as advertised) and I wanted to start afresh with a new mix with perlite & grit added and in a terracotta pot with a drainage hole. In between these two repotting sessions I had also attempted a rather desperate knat culling using diatomaceous earth (where I removed some layers of soil, sprinkled in some of the earth, then used a plastic spoon to work it into the soil below and repeated this as I replenished the soil up to the surface). I have now discovered that in doing this, I severely damaged some of the roots - there's only around 1/2-1/3 of the roots left! I'm devastated.
I also realised that I stupidly watered the jade immediately after repotting (both times) so some of the older leaves have begun to droop and lose their shine, as well as feel slightly spongey compared to a new baby jade I bought myself last week.
Do you have any advice as to how I can help it recover? I think the leaves are waterlogged and the plant is in dire need of light, so I've bought a full-spectrum LED grow light and am planning on forgoing any watering for at least a month. Other than that, I have no clue what else to do! I know there is always the option to prune off all the branches and propagate these into a totally new plant arrangement, but I'm reluctant to do this unless totally necessary given the sentimental value of the plant.
Sorry to ramble, just finding myself turn into a crazy plant lady with each day since I realised about the damage I caused. Again, I'll appreciate any info you can offer. Take care! 🙂
i repotted my jade plant today and i wish I saw this video beforehand! I think the terracotta pot I selected is too big/deep and I'm afraid to repot it a second time into a smaller pot. I'm wondering if I just water it less frequently, and make this the soil dries out -- that the larger/deeper terracotta pot it is currently in will be okay? Do you have any recommendations? I've killed a few in NYC indoors and finally got it. I brought it with me when I moved to California. Doing well indoors so much I had to prune it and have a second one. I came here because I inherited an outdoor jade. It's old, not very bushy but the soil is rock hard and I'm afraid to repot it. It gets so much sun the leaves are mainly red. It needs pruning badly but very hesitant to trim off anything because the stems aren't very thick to cut from. Any thoughts?
Hello David. I think you are putting off the inevitable....REPOTTING! HAHA I think some fresh well draining soil will do wonders for the plant. Is it just too large to make it an easy pot? Get some help if needed, but I think this is what you need to do before the seasons change and the growth slows.

I need some advice. Im trying to repot my jade plant, because it was in a tiny pot. BUT no mater the size of the pot I chose, the plant keeps falling out of the pot. It doesnt stay under the soil, it falls out. My plant is kind of growing on the side & not vertically (I think it lacked water at some point). it right next to a window, and its growing very fast.. but how can I make it stay in a new pot (I put rocks on top of the soil to keep the plant in, but it is not a good solution, makes mold)
That is a frustrating situation. If the stems are flopped over then most likely they were too heavy or grew too quickly. It is very difficult to give any advice without seeing the plant, so feel free to send a picture to my Instagram account everything_plants_ca otherwise I think you are left to try pruning or using stakes to prop up those stems. i noticed this morning that my potted jade plant has moss on the surface of the soil. I only water it weekly, it's located beside my west window. is it bad or good?
A west window is good for a jade. Does the soil you use mix in moss? It should be okay as long as you let the soil dry out completely and be sure to check the lower soil.

Thanks Eleni! I think i gave it a bit of water as I know it definitely needed it. I have read that try not to water immediately after repottong to give a chance for damaged roots to heal. But I would say that if it needs water then definitely give it a bit. I'm not a professional, but this is simply just my opinion on what I would do.

I was carrying some fencing across the back yard and I tripped and some of the fencing fell onto the second huge jade plant I have,there is now a rip near the base of it and I just feel horrible. Is there any way to help support it
I hope you are okay as well..... I am not too sure if you can secure it back into place or not. You might be better off removing it and letting the end harden over then stick it back into the soil. I am probably not the best person to be asking because this has never happened to me before.

Hi! I just potted a small cutting about 3 weeks ago.. i observed the leaves have brown/black small scabs (it seems like oedema to me ) can you please suggest me something so that i can save my plant? 3 leaves have fallen already I’m scared to lose anymore :(
Could it be leaf burn? Did you recently move it to a bright spot?
