It also contaminated the lake waters. The factory eventually was closed but after the lake was severely polluted. Resort development at balige hasn't helped. Samosir has no original forests left on it. The asahan hydroelectric plant added it's share of degradation and threatened to destroy the forests of the asahan by flooding it...that was stopped as it is a biodiversity hot spot and travel destination. An international airport was planned here but canceled. After all that who would fly around the world to come here.

There are many clans on Lake Toba, the clans are descendants of ancient ancestors, I was baptized there and the priest was Swiss, maybe now they don't exist or are rare. There are also many women there who married Caucasians and were given surnames by their parents, so it's not surprising that many Caucasians can speak Batak.
