This one seems to have slipped under the radar of many film score fans because the movie had such a limited release in the US. As usual, Goldsmith's music is the best thing about it--there are echoes of the other scores he was doing at the time, including OMEN 3.
"New recording"? You mean "only recording." The actual master tapes of the score as heard in the film were lost. This reconstruction by the City of Prague Philharmonic under Nic Raine is the only version available.
Yep. When I heard this, I immediately thought of the "Final Conflict" score. This movie was released in 1981, just like Final Conflict, so I'm sure some cross-inspiration might have been happening.
But ... Did the producers tell Jerry Goldsmith that the film was set in Italy and not in the U.S.A.? and above all that it was not Rambo? the action music is over the top for such a bland and boring movie, MUSIC TOO AWESOME.

This is great! Not surprisingly, considering this is from 1981, I hear Final Conflict vibes throughout.

Leigh Phillips who had to reconstruct the score for its rerecording was NOT happy to be repeatedly exposed to Franco Nero's butt....

Jerry’s music is usually too good for whatever he’s scoring. Sometimes I think he picks movie bombs on purpose to emphasize this.
The book is excellent. Unfortunately it was turned into a hopeless screenplay. It might have worked better as a miniseries @@commandercaptain4664
