OMG! Thank you thank you thank you!!! Sooooooooo much I’ve watched a million videos on this stupid airdrop thing not working and I’ve tried them all but this video! 🤯🤯🤯 is not repeated tutorials! I never knew about image capture or just thinking to drop from the phone straight to FCP! Genius! Thank you now I can finally finish this editing! You’re amazing!
So great to hear this, Lisa! And I'm so glad you have a new, reliable option for offloading your footage. And definitely feel free to import directly into FCP - just remember it'll copy the media INTO your library. Which is fine! Just need to remember that that's where it goes after import. Happy editing!
Fortunately I knew all of these methods but I learned them the hard way with lost of struggle. Wish that I had a video explaining things easily like yours, great video! I mostly use airdrop because it’s the most convenient, even tho often it takes about an hour for large files. I am so tempted to upgrade to the new iPhone from my 11 pro, but no USBc port is a deal breaker, fingers crossed for next year
Do you have a video for inverse... rendered video back to iphone. . airdrop is 50.50 . . sometimes it will save a 50mb render video mp4 or h264 to camera roll... other times it saves to icloud and WILL NOT let you download to your photos app. there are no reddit or youtube articles on this yet
Am I missing something (yes?)? When you do your image capture and select where you want it to go (@4:15), at the bottom of the finder window is "New Folder". Why did you have to go to finder itself and create a new folder there? I have never seen where "New Folder", when it was there, wasn't available to do just that. Create a new folder. ??? If I'm being dumb, you're welcome to say so, at my age, it won't be the first time. TIA.
Not being dumb at all! And your instincts are great for thinking of how to simplify the process. You'll notice that I'm not just creating a new folder but I'm copying and pasting a Finder Folder Template I've created into that new folder - which is something can't do in a Chooser window. I could have created the New Folder in the Chooser window but I still would have had to switch to Finder to copy and paste my Finder Folder Template *_into_* that new folder so I could "download" my iPhone videos to the correct folder within that folder organization. Great question - let me know if that clears it up!
I find myself mainly using the airdrop method - but it is annoying when the transfer fails and you have to start over. The image capture method is probably a better choice so you know it's not going to fail. No matter what through transferring footage from an iPhone is a slog of a process... Are you planning to do a meet up for anyone when you're in LA?
As do I! But when I've got multiple video files that are several minutes long, I just use Image Capture to reduce risk. Not sure if I'll do a meet-up when I'm in LA - I've got a pretty full calendar, and I'm hoping that VidSummit will act - in a sense - as a big meetup with fellow creators.

A HUGE Thank You for this tutorial!! This will definitely help me with my file structure. Question... Can Apple ProRaw DNG photo files be edited in FCPX for color correction/video matching? I want to mix both video & photos in a few projects. As always, Thank You for all of your valuable information! 👍
Hi Matthew. I use Filmic Pro on my iPhone XR. When I connect my iPhone to my MacBook Pro, I use Finder to access Files, where Filmic Pro footage is stored, to transfer my footage to my Templates folder. What is the difference between my method vs using Image Capture?
No major difference, really, when you're using Filmic Pro. I don't know that you can access your stored photos or videos the same way, though. I think you have to access them through an app. Obviously some of them sync to Photos via iCloud eventually, but if you *_just_* took the photos or video, Image Capture - for me - is the fastest/most reliable way to get them on my computer.
Thanks for this clear, informative video, Matt. I use Image Capture all the time to import from SD cards, but the MP4 videos don't show up in Image Capture. AppleCare Senior Advisor says Image Capture can't recognize MP4 files. Is that your experience also?
That is a great question! I will have to check - I’ve never imported from an SD card using Image Capture. I’ve only ever used it to snag videos from my iPhone. Curious to try it out though!
Ok I’ve used image capture a tonne but what about LIVE photos which can be converted to movies/ Moving images in iCloud/iohoto. If you take off your iphone don’t they just become static stills? So I usually use airdrop and only used image capture when I need to take a tonne of images off my phone
Yes, some features of the camera app on the phone may be lost when transferring via Image Capture. I need to double-check if Cinematic and Action Mode video properties are preserved when transferred that way...
Thanks for sharing this. I'll catch it a bit later when I'm back home. Just bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max and it's in the mail heading here. I've been researching which methods work the best transferring Apple ProRes files off the phone. I tried using AirDrop last night from my iPhone 12 Pro Max to my M1 Mac Mini and it took 17 min. to transfer a 30GB file. So I'm intersted in what you're showing. Thanks.
It'll still take a while to transfer ProRes files using Image Capture, but it'll be more reliable than AirDrop I think. The iPhone can't get USB-C/Thunderbolt fast enough!
@@matthewTobrien Thanks. Some one else had mentioned this method too. I'll give it a try once my new phone arrives. I got a great deal on my new phone and went with 512GB instead of 1TB deciding to wait for the USB-C port to go for that storage.
Solid plan - I think I'd probably go 512 at least on the iPhone 15 if it can transfer at typical USB-C speeds because I'd be tempted to capture to ProRes...
@@matthewTobrien You know what happened now. Last night while I was looking at iPhone 13 Pro Max listings where I had bought mine for a really low price, someone else had one listed for an equally low price and it was new and 1TB. So I couldn't help myself and bought it. lol :) So that's great. However now I'll have 3 iPhone Pro Maxes. A 512GB iPhone 12 Pro Max, my current mint phone. And the 2 iPhone 13 Pro Maxes, 512GB and 1TB. What was I thinking? lol :) Maybe I can open my own Apple Store. :) I have to sell both 512GB ones. Don't need more than one. But as I mentioned the 1TB one is new so I can keep it for awhile. I'll see if I can add AppleCare+ at the Apple Store 4 blocks from my house. Now I won't have to limit any videos I shoot in Apple ProRes and can transfer them at home when time isn't so much of an issue.
Once again a great video. I will try that transfer method tonight. When you use your templates as you do in this video do your videos auto generate in FCPX library. If so I am still doing something wrong
Not sure what you mean by "do your videos auto generate"... Do you mean do the video files I'm going to use in the edit get included in the FCP Library when I use my template?
@@matthewTobrien Ill use TH-cam file template as an example. I believe you have your FCP template in there too. When you put your videos into the file template and open your library in FCP do your videos already exist in the library or do you still need to import them? Had a disaster with my footage yesterday. Relying entirely on my iPhone for video and voice I had been using my ear buds between takes. When i turned my DJI gamble app on my music stopped playing. Like the templates. I have a different workflow that works for me, but I like seeing what others do in case I find it works better for me. As far as importing, I essentially do the same thing via the lightning cable. But since I use FilmicPro (though not sure for how much longer), I go into Finder and grab the files from the phone in FilmicPro's folder. The big difference is I don't get any kind of progress bar. I just have to see that the files have completely transferred before deleting them from the phone. Just like you, I found AirDrop very unreliable with large files. Hell, I find it unreliable going from my iMac to another device depending on how I'm doing the sharing. Since the 14 Pro didn't get an upgraded port, that was a major reason I didn't upgrade to it. Plus my 11 Pro pretty much covers everything I actually need.
I couldn't agree more with all of these points - I haven't started using Filmic Pro so for me Image Capture is my go-to method for those video files. I'm certainly hoping the iPhone 15 has USB-C...
