  • Former IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. (Ret.) Jonathan Conricus served in the Israel Defense Forces for 24 years as a combat commander in Lebanon and Gaza. He is now a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies focused on the Middle East. PragerU CEO Marissa Streit challenges Jonathan about Israel's military response to Hamas and its humanitarian efforts in Gaza following the attacks of October 7. If Israel is victorious, what would that mean for the future of Gaza?

The discussion in this war is absurd.
First. Israel acted selflessly to live in peace with the Palestinians in Gaza. It was more than a decade ago when Israel itself relocated thousands of individuals living in Gaza with lethal force from their homes to follow the agreement, which obligated the Palestinians in return to stop any kind of aggression towards Israel. The Palestinians had the chance to build a safe, functional, and prosperous livelihood. But the first thing the Palestinians did in return was to elect a government that enshrined the goal of destroying Israel in their constitution. The elected government followed through with its promise. Since its founding, thousands of rockets have flown into Israel. Dozens of civilians died in terrorist attacks. Millions of aid funds - intended for civilian purpose - were misused to build rockets, tunnels, and other nonsense. The crimes committed on October 7th like raping women, killing children, or kidnapping a baby, was Humus has been doing for years.
Secondly. Israel behaved more humanely in this conflict than any other conceivable party in any imaginable conflict. It allowed Palestinians to work in Israel, receive medical care or even migrate into their country. During war, they warn civilians where their military is operating. They admit collateral damage and apologize for it. They saved Sinwar’s life giving him a lethal brain surgery. They treated the daughter of Haniyyas daughter for her complex disease in Israel. While Humus was building rockets and tunnels with all the foreign aid, Israel supplied their civilians with free water and electricity.
The situation is clear. In no other conflict the responsibility for the suffering has been so one sided and clear - in no other conflict have the perpetrators been held accountable so weakly. People with voice and power who claim to reject war have the duty to unequivocally name the culprit of this war and do everything in their power to eliminate them. Everything else is responsibility for the resulting suffering and will extend it.

I think that one reason why Israel was lulled into some complacency was because people in the border kibbutzim and villages thought they had began forming meaningful relationships with their Gazan neighbours who came to work in Israel.
Israel, the IDF erred, but you erred on the side of your humanity I would say.
No-one in our world would or could imagine that one's neighbours would use years and years to 'educate' their children, train their teenagers, pray daily and teach them to actually hate Jews, and consider killing them as their highest achievements. No-one.
Jews as well as Christian have been taught for centuries that there is always hope when life is bad and consequently, when one sees signs of improvement, especially on a social level, one will almost automatically ignore the propaganda that proclaims the opposite, for why would anyone just wish for others to die for no valid reason?
We all thought we were moving beyond racism, gender and sex discrimination, ethnic cleanising etc. We all thought these were nasty human behaviours of the past.
Well, October 7th 2023 taught us that there are are still a lot of issues that have to be put on the table and clearly spoken about, defined, agreed upon and what's more, acted upon if we do want a better world.....And no-one, no-one should bend over backwards to please a bullies, least of Israel. For 2000 years you all pray: Net yeat in Jerusalem. You ARE in Jerusalem and you are supposed TO KEEP IT. If the earth is a body, Jerusalem is its heart; not a big organ, but a vital one.

The map I just looked up shows Khan Yunis about 5 miles from Rafah. That map shows Gaza being about 25 miles long from end to end and from ~6 to ~13 miles wide. Claims that people couldn't walk or be rolled in vehicles that far in order to get away from fighting were always ridiculous. That they should have expected to be given the opportunity after supporting a brutal attack on their next door neighbors was more than they had any right to expect.
