    You understood what most of the software engineers take years to realise which is career/expertise management and not fall for the "safety zone cushion" trap and that is very very difficult.

    you say you are only entry-level, yet you seem to already be expert in system design. how did you learn all that without the years of experience building them at scale at Google, etc?
    also yes, great summary of politics. i love to code, but politics makes me hate PMs and hate my job. non-techs just take all the credit and get the promotion.

    • @jordanhasnolife5163

      Perhaps building real massive systems in practice have other concerns than theoretically such as counting the number of dev hours it takes to build versus just throwing more money at vertical scaling

    Wait so why quant finance? Why not an early stage startup that’s growing fast? Unless you really cared about the money. But if it was learning you were after, I think a startup would have greater dividends in that regard.
    Would like to hear your thought process, if you considered the exciting startup/rocket ship route

    • @rtusiime

      Thanks for the response. Quick follow up: I’ve always worried that the stuff you learn in quant finance isn’t as applicable outside the field? Say i wanted to eventually start my own company, do you think the learning at a quant firm is comparable to the learnings at an early stage? (Basically is the quant firm still a better bet since you don’t have to trade off money, but still learn a tonne, compared to an early stage startup)

    • @jordanhasnolife5163
      @jordanhasnolife5163  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@rtusiime I think that's hard to say and it's very role dependent! Assuming that you're talking about being a software engineer (as opposed to a trader or quant researcher), you could have many different types of day to day projects. You might be writing exchange facing code, or you might be doing more infrastructural work. All of this to say, I don't really think working one particular job is going to make you better suited to "start your own company" one day, but perhaps you'll gain some niche knowledge in your particular domain that does.

    Great video! I'm a new grad who JUST started my position a week ago and I wanted to originally do full stack but I think my manager is putting me through the exact same data pipeline job where i use SQL. Hopefully i don't get pigeonholed in that for TOO long or else I'll probably end up finding a new team after. Do you think it's okay staying a year here for the experience and my resume even if I don't want to get stuck doing SQL? It's a rotational program for a big company so I get to switch teams guaranteed in a year if I wanted.

I imagine the difference in hours per week to pay ratio is worth it for front loading the technical growth. Enjoy your travels 👍
