    Just got my Olympus om10 this week. I wanted something small and portable and was glad to find something that was also a great performing camera. Looking forward to developing my first roll.

    I know the owner of a vintage camera store. He's an old guy like me. :-) All he shoots with is Olympus film cameras. And needless to say, he can shoot with anything he wants. Epic camera collection in his vintage store.

    The OM-10 was my first ever camera purchase in 1982. It cost a fraction over £100 brand new and the shutter adapter thing was an optional accessory I bought but never actually used. Like you, I'm overwhelmingly aperture priority by choice and with this camera, although I was given my Dad's light meter, I never really needed it because the camera itself metered very accurately. I found the manual focus method was very reliable for landscapes (almost always shot at f/11) and I've never truly needed a fast focusing camera at any time since. The 50mm f/1.8 kit lens was excellent, although having made numerous attempts to adapt it to mirrorless cameras (mainly micro four thirds) subsequently, I failed to get satisfactory results. The small size was a big advantage, although I didn't realise it at the time. It's ironic that the design of many digital cameras mimic film varieties, but hardly any are as diminutive as the OM-10.
    I learned how to process film at my secondary school in the 1970s, but never tried it at home. I think if I'd done so, my photography hobby would have taken off properly more than thirty years sooner than it actually did. Perhaps I also ought to have printed my pictures larger to encourage me a bit more. To be honest, the digital experience is far more to my liking and certainly I became fairly proficient as a photographer quite quickly after buying a Panasonic Lumix G1 back in 2009. Between times, my OM-10 gathered dust, but did make a lasting impression and has been a big influence on my photography style and general approach. Keep it simple!

    I found an OM-10 today in the thriftstore! Had to give it a clean, test out all the functions but it seems to be working although the lens could use a more thorough cleaning because there's some particles and dust in it. Either way, happy with it and looking forward to start shooting with it!

    This is a very nice camera. I have the OM-D EM-10 Mark III, which is its digital equivalent. The OM-10 was considered primarily an amateur level camera back in the day but there is nothing wrong with preferring this camera to those farther up the line. Often amateur level cameras are smaller, lighter, and more user friendly. Of course, the photographer and the glass are the most important factors. I grew up with manual focus and use manual focus cameras exclusively when I shoot film. It does take some getting used to but it is good discipline.

    • @Arianna-zx1ro
      @Arianna-zx1ro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree! I'm definitely starting to get used to quickly(ish) manual focusing but still learning for sure. I had the EM-10 II for about 3 years before upgrading to the EM1 but the EM10 was an awesome camera.

    If I may add, the OM-10 is a beautiful camera. The esthetic is also a part of it. I have two OM-10, a OM-30 and a OM-2. All are in perfect working condition.
    The lenses are good quality, and an adapter to a Canon or Nikon (probably other brands as well) is cheap.

    Some people say that Olympus gear is the poor mans Leica, I say Leica is the rich mans’ Olympus. My OM2 was a gift from my parents on Christmas when I was 16 years old. Im now turning 63 and it still running perfectly. Over the years I have added Zuiko primes lenses but the 28mm f2.8 basically lives on it. Great for street photography!

    Great review. I would say though honorable mention to most OM models such as 2,3,4,20,30,40..I think they all do aperture priority and most would do manual and with the shutter selection in the usual spot, not an add-on module

    It is surprisingly easy to develop black and white film at home and you do not need a special space to do that. I waited way to long to start develop my own black and white film. By the way my Nikon FE and FE2 have the lock option on the shutter button, and it is a nice option because I have scrapped some shots with my Pentax K1000 which does not have this option

    It's actually no problem at all to develop film at home; all you need is developing tank and a changing bag. I've developed in the kitchen, bathroom, hallway, cellar, even outside if conditions where right (temperature wise).
    But to make actual darkroom prints, that I can understand, that's all another ball game, a problem I'm facing myself.

    I have an OM10 that is showing faults in the electrical part. I use the adapter to manually set the speed. Can you tell me if even without the electrical part working this adapter works normally to set the speed? Or if without the electrical part, how fast is the camera shooting.

    As a noob taking this on vacation are there any of reliable general aperture setting you would suggest for portrait? Landscape? Close up?

    • @Arianna-zx1ro
      @Arianna-zx1ro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ooh fun! for portraits and close ups, i usually stick to around 2.8. I find that 1.8 is great but can often be TOO shallow of a depth of field (ex. when taking a photo of my dog at f1.8, her nose will be in focus but eyes will be out of focus already). As for landscapes, i stick to higher numbers (around 8 and 11). I find that I still want it open enough where my shutter speed is relatively fast. When capturing the "moments" (ex. people, pets, etc.), i usually stick to around 2.8-4 again in lighter environments so I can capture motion without motion blur (unless that's your cup of tea). Hopefully that helped!

    The OM-10 is a dreadful camera. (I'm sorry - I almost never comment negatively to someone's video, but I hope to save someone's frustration and money by deterring them from wasting their money on this undependable camera.) The electromagnetic shutter often fails, so the camera is useless without the manual adapter. I had mine repaired twice before I realized it just wasn't worth the trouble. Also it has a lot of plastic internals - it's just not a quality camera. The Zuiko lenses are terrific, so save some frustration and get an OM-1, 2, 3, or 4. I have an OM-4ti, and in my opinion, that's the Olympus camera to have. The 1s and 2s are also very good, but more basic cameras without automatic exposure.
