I must confess to being a gardening Philistine. When my English Lavender "goes over" I just give it a fairly short haircut down to around 10-12 inches with the hedgetrimmer, & it's been rewarding with great blossom year after year.

I've just planted four French lavenders bought from our local Morrison's in pots and although it might be a bit late I've also pruned them back to about half size; fingers crossed the planting and pruning will be beneficial; I didn't even know lavender needed pruning until I watched your video. My lavender is about 5ft 5" ,tall and 4ft wide. Its about 16 years old. I never really touch it except for taking some stems in summer autumn. Soil is alkaline and a little stony.Its magnificent. I had it in a little pot for a long time, and it was half dead. I got an allotment and it was the first plant I put on it. It took off with such gusto, and happiness, I am still in awe when I see it. 😊
Mine is younger and the flowers just came out a month ago im afraid im not pruning till the ends of november, I don want to upset her, I hope it lives as long as yours!

I'm new at gardening, im guessing i did the following incorrectly: took out a full lavender bush from the roots and planted on the other side of the garden which has very hot day sun with wind early evenings, its 2 weeks now and bush is brown and dry even though watering the whole garden daily...? I feel like I’ve tapped into just the right place for some much need divine lavender wisdom. I’m struggling but yet I keep trying. I can get growth, but I’m not getting a bushy return the following spring. Believe me, I’ve been at this for a while. Lol I’ve sheered/trimmed well back after bloom. Not sure if I should trim in fall, preemptively, or in spring. I have been experimenting quite a bit. I just can’t seem to get enough compact or bushiness to my my stead or hidcotes. Do you ever use fertilizer of any kind? Much appreciation for skills!

Thank you for posting. New gardener here. I am in central Florida and it's still hot. Also we get a lot of torrential rain here in the summer, alternating with brutally hot summer sun. Ok to prune now in mid August? It's looking brown and leggy and stopped flowering awhile back. It's in a pot so maybe it's feeling a bit squished, hard to say. I trimmed about 1/4 of the way down last week and it doesn't look too happy about it. Ok to go forward with trimming it further down? And what's the best way to fertilize lavender in a pot? (preferably something not too toxic because I thought I might try making tea or something from it). Thank you =)
In the States your local County Extension Service’s Master Gardener program is a good place to get location-specific gardening advice. CES is usually ran by the state ag college, which I suspect would be Fl A&M. (It’s Tx A&M in Texas & Or State U. in Oregon.)

It was gifted to me about a month ago, and it was doing well until about week ago. The tips of the leaves started to BROWN on one side. Now about half of the plant is browned, and a couple places droop while other parts thrive. The only directions I was given was to keep moist and hot, give good light. I put it on a South facing window sill. How often is it supposed to be watered? How do I save this plant? Would it help to repot it? How big does the pot have to be? What kind of soil does it need? Vicky Victoria Jolina Modelling Iliaens search for how to propegate lavender ! usually lavender has some new green growth and you have to make a sharp clean cut on these new stems and remove 2 sets of leaves and let with 2 gems from the lower leaves exposed to dig it in rooting hormone and stick it in soil and let atleast 2 sets of leaves on top and make sure that ur pruners are clean and u will deep it the first bottom stem in rooting powder found in stores and u will follow the instructions about preparing and creating new plants from the mother plants take as much as possible because the sooneer u do this the higher chance u can create new plants. Water their sandy rocky lowly fertile soil do not exagerate on the compost or organic matter and make the soil a mix always make as drained as possible and never overwater it. But u will water and make more umid to the new stems in cups that u make and try to keep them atleast a few weeks 2 or 3 with sticks to hold a plastic around the cup and the new tiny plant and do not let it get direct sunlight only indirectly otherwise it will kill the plant. After this 3 weeks i will slowly introduce each day some minutes to sun little by little with patience with everysingle one and then they will be new plants ans transplant them into new big pots to get stronger with GOOD DRAINAGE otherwise no drainage and no loose sandy rocky soil it will not help the plant WITH PH around 7-8 alkaline and with either lime mixed in the soil do not overdose it but give it a good hand of it ask for some help in garden center or if u choose mix many dried egg shells that it will be mixed with the soil and eill slowly make ur soil morr alkaline. If u feel like doing all the process it is possible but requires some care atleast for the first month for the stems to root. Get this ! Lavender gets old after 8 years... after 15 years the plants get extremely old and usually may die or really slow it down almost completely if u are lucky 20 yrs she might still give some growth and flowers but this is the limit of the plant ur dad went to the place where there are many other lavenders do not worry they go but they always will rebloom ! Thanks for worrying for him @ Btw the normal lavender must be the Lavandula Angustifolia Officinalis which is the english or traditional lavender usually she is kinda green and gray in winter andvery long both leaves and stems ! Try buying some new plants at the store those tiny ones and give them a good pruning to grow beautifully ! many blessings to u ! Almost forgot do not FERTILIZE with any liquid ur lavender just mix compost with sand in their soil once a year after the pruning to their preparation to bloom in spring/summer and make sure the soil is not clay oe heavy it needs drainage and watered gently slowly and it needs to get dry to the plant get stressed the more stressed and in suffer this plant is in poor soil no water and full sun the better and stronger it gets but if u overwater and make the soil too fertile u will kill them do not let them in shade just aclimate the plants slowly but in the end let them in sun happily

Nice video, thank you. I have a question. I was given quite a lot of lavender bunches to hang up and dry. I haven't ever worked with lavender before. I layed out some paper and went to bundle them up and noticed a lot of tiny, almost microscopic bugs everywhere and what looks like tiny aphids and several other types of tiny bugs. My question is, Is there a proper way to hang and dry them and get rid of the bugs in the stalks?
Our lavender doesn't look like any of the ones you showed. It looks like a bushy mess. I had no idea how to make it look more uniform. I'm glad I watched this. I'm not sure which type of lavender I have, but am I correct to assume that this is the way to prune all lavender? I'm on the east coast of the US, and the plants I purchased said 'English lavender' but I think that might be any number of lavender now that I am watching this.
Prune the 'squat' angustifolia (often referred to as English Lavender, but there's no such thing really) and the spiky x intermedia lavender (often mistakenly referred to as French Lavender) immediately after flowers are over.
Thank you for this. I bought and planted lavender (I'm in Tuscany) in early June. Some of the stalks were already long. I now find in mid July that they are grey and spent, while other shorter, blooming stalks are coming up. Should I prune the spent ones and leave the others? Thanks so much.
Hello I have an English lavender in a big container (first year I bought it in spring).. Should I still prune now? Also should I cover over or around with straw mulch to protect the lavender in winter please. Thank you Natalie
You can still prune lavender very lightly at this time of year. You can mulch, but not too close to the base of the plants as this will create still moist air around the base, which through the winter could give rise to botrytis (grey mould).....lavenders nemesis!
Hi. I am a 1st time lavender planter. My plants were very small when planted in July. I live Norway. We just experienced a 0.05 celcius last night. I haven't pruned all 12 but only 3 yesterday. Now I'm afraid to prune the rest for fear of further damage if frist comes tonight or later before the plants have time to recover from pruning. Is this correct? Thank you in advance!
I have a 5 year old lavender that is growing crazy long but sprawled out on the sides and hardly any in the center. It's a northwestern US English variety. Any ideas as to why it is so floppy with no straight center growth?
Good video; I agree that the sound could be louder though. I have a (stoechas) lavender plant; but I'm not sure how best to prune it - please could you give me some advice? The problem is that I forgot to prune it for a couple of years, and now it's almost a standard - i.e. there's a bare stem about a foot long, and everything now grows off that one spindly stem. Please can you tell me how best to prune it?
Leggy stoechas are tricky to correct! Several periods of light pruning are best. Always leave a hand's width of green above the bare wood and do this principally after flowering in June and maybe again in late July.
TheAtomicTurnip i would just go with it if it's got a good stem and push for a tall standard, they look great with the heavy flower heads! just prune it a bit for training, stake it and grow the clippings as cuttings in pots. come next year you'll have plenty to replant when you pull out your standard and pot it as a show piece. I did that with one stoechas that went a bit awry when some school kids stomped on our garden, ended up with this extremely fancy standard blows my mind when it flowers and a complete hedge from the cuttings...
Hi I was in hospital from beginning of August and it’s now mid November and I am home but I missed pruning my huge lavenders in August. Is it too late for me to prune them now??
Abbie D I was just watching another video on when you should cut the lavender and in one of the comments there was the same question. The answer was that it is too late now and it’s better to do it in early Spring

angustifolia 'Maillette' is renowned for being the best in Europe and quite readily available. It has a sweet scent. If you want a stronger and sharper scent then go for x intermedia 'Grosso'
Any later and you risk the new, tender shoots being killed by frost, which will then rot on the plant and make the plants susceptible of disease. You could prune later if there is no danger of frost where you live. I live in the subtropics and I prune whenever I feel like it. My plants flower year round!

Almost forgot do not FERTILIZE with any liquid ur lavender just mix compost with sand in their soil once a year after the pruning to their preparation to bloom in spring/summer and make sure the soil is not clay oe heavy it needs drainage and watered gently slowly and it needs to get dry to the plant get stressed the more stressed and in suffer this plant is in poor soil no water and full sun the better and stronger it gets but if u overwater and make the soil too fertile u will kill them do not let them in shade just aclimate the plants slowly but in the end let them in sun happily

Early September and early May are best, but if weather mild and not too wet lavender can be planted into October and then in April.
Nice video, thank you. I have a question. I was given quite a lot of lavender bunches to hang up and dry. I haven't ever worked with lavender before. I layed out some paper and went to bundle them up and noticed a lot of tiny, almost microscopic bugs everywhere and what looks like tiny aphids and several other types of tiny bugs. My question is, Is there a proper way to hang and dry them and get rid of the bugs in the stalks?

Say I live in Thailand. Do I need a specific month to prune? Cos we dont have winter here.
Prune into the foliage about a third when flowers have gone over and when subsequent flowers go over in the same year.

Our lavender doesn't look like any of the ones you showed. It looks like a bushy mess. I had no idea how to make it look more uniform. I'm glad I watched this. I'm not sure which type of lavender I have, but am I correct to assume that this is the way to prune all lavender? I'm on the east coast of the US, and the plants I purchased said 'English lavender' but I think that might be any number of lavender now that I am watching this.
Prune the 'squat' angustifolia (often referred to as English Lavender, but there's no such thing really) and the spiky x intermedia lavender (often mistakenly referred to as French Lavender) immediately after flowers are over.
Is mid September too late to prune lavender?

You can still prune lavender very lightly at this time of year. You can mulch, but not too close to the base of the plants as this will create still moist air around the base, which through the winter could give rise to botrytis (grey mould).....lavenders nemesis!

Hi. I am a 1st time lavender planter. My plants were very small when planted in July. I live Norway. We just experienced a 0.05 celcius last night. I haven't pruned all 12 but only 3 yesterday. Now I'm afraid to prune the rest for fear of further damage if frist comes tonight or later before the plants have time to recover from pruning. Is this correct? Thank you in advance!
I have a 5 year old lavender that is growing crazy long but sprawled out on the sides and hardly any in the center. It's a northwestern US English variety. Any ideas as to why it is so floppy with no straight center growth?

I have a (stoechas) lavender plant; but I'm not sure how best to prune it - please could you give me some advice? The problem is that I forgot to prune it for a couple of years, and now it's almost a standard - i.e. there's a bare stem about a foot long, and everything now grows off that one spindly stem.
Please can you tell me how best to prune it?
Leggy stoechas are tricky to correct! Several periods of light pruning are best. Always leave a hand's width of green above the bare wood and do this principally after flowering in June and maybe again in late July.

TheAtomicTurnip i would just go with it if it's got a good stem and push for a tall standard, they look great with the heavy flower heads! just prune it a bit for training, stake it and grow the clippings as cuttings in pots.
come next year you'll have plenty to replant when you pull out your standard and pot it as a show piece.
I did that with one stoechas that went a bit awry when some school kids stomped on our garden, ended up with this extremely fancy standard blows my mind when it flowers and a complete hedge from the cuttings...

angustifolia 'Maillette' is renowned for being the best in Europe and quite readily available. It has a sweet scent. If you want a stronger and sharper scent then go for x intermedia 'Grosso'

Any later and you risk the new, tender shoots being killed by frost, which will then rot on the plant and make the plants susceptible of disease. You could prune later if there is no danger of frost where you live. I live in the subtropics and I prune whenever I feel like it. My plants flower year round!
