  • In today's video, Liam applies some shiny gauge bezels to his Porsche 944. The Porsche 944 dash was missing something in Liam's mind, so he decided to purchase some gauge bezels to install to see if that would make a difference. While we were in there, we also replaced the gauge bulbs to make them a little brighter...

    *So, gauge bezels... yes or no? What do you think?* 👀

      I think the bezels are a definite yes. Keeping them chrome would be best in my opinion.

      Absolute no, usually trashy 944s have them.

      Have it as stock in my Toyota. In certain angles it reflects and you go blinded, so my rec is no. But maybe the Porsches gauges is deeper and don't get sun reflecting.

    I just finished my dash. LED bulbs, new odometer gear, an hour and a half of scrubbing the inside to clean the dust that seemed to bond with the plastc.
    And the gauge bezels! Mine arrived silver because there wasn't an apparently easy way to order black. I painted mine a shiny black, then super-glued them in.
    Fantastic!

    The factory uses a silver coating on the reflector tunnels that fades with age. Someone has tried to fix this with the foil. I used aluminium tape on mine and with LED bulbs it was fantastic illumination for at night and the dimmer switch still worked. I also use gauge bezels, added mine last year.

      Okay that's great to know. So it wasn't us going mad then.

      What kind of LEDs did you use so that the dimmer still works? I'm trying to find some to improve the lighting a bit without the bulbs burning up the surrounding plastic

    I’m retired now…I both flew in the Navy and “drove” ships back and forth across the Atlantic. And I have to say, watching this video, I came as close to getting motion sickness as I ever did during my time at sea. Still, I liked this video….I certainly liked the idea of adding the bezels…..and your color scheme (Baltic blue with Linen leather interior) is the exact scheme of my ‘90 S2 Cabriolet. But one thing about old cars, once you start disconnecting / reconnecting plugs and wires that have been happily attached for 20-30 years, you’re asking for trouble. So I think I’ll bypass this “for looks only” modification…but black does look better than the chrome. I wish you guys well….great video showing how to disassemble the dash, should I ever have to….and I most certainly hope the “attack of the electric gremlins” isn’t in your future! Best wishes from this side of the pond, gentlemen!

    the bezels need to be thicker and taller to really give that classic feel...and satin black....then customize the gauges themselves and it would be quite nice

    I think it only looks a little off because there isn't much chrome in the interior, so it stands out a bit. But that's just my picky opinion.

    • @TheBackRoads
      @TheBackRoads  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think you're alone in that to be honest. I'm still undecided myself, it definitely adds to the interior but I'm not sure if it sits correctly.

    Hi guys I have a 1986 944 and I cant get it to start I've replaced everything and still won't start any ideas guys .

    • @TheBackRoads
      @TheBackRoads  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends what you've already replaced. Always start with the DME relay in the fuse box. If that doesn't work, make sure all the sensors in the engine bay are properly secure and connected. If that doesn't work, start looking at fuel system.

      @@TheBackRoads thanks for your reply I have fitted a new pump and filter I even put new injectors , new crank potion sencer and crank speed sencer , new leads , rotor arm , disstibribitor cap and a new coil as well as a new d.m.e switch but there's no power going to the coil when you turn the key so all the dash is lite up

    • @panvomacka9079
      @panvomacka9079 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adriancowlard1463 I went through a similar scenario but still used an old cable from coil to distributor. It was the culprit in my case, one connector burned out abd gave insane resistance. But i'm sure you changed that with all the other leads. Fingers crossed it's not the DME board. Check for moisture there (passenger footwell). If coil is OK and no power goes to it, i dont have other idea besides some bad wiring :-/

    I'd say they would look better in black. That silver looks out of place. No other interior trim is chrome or silver on 944's

      in my 944 i have the dash trim strip in body color (silver/grey - PO did it and i quite like it) as well as the center part of the seats (had to re-uppholster them so i matched the trim). Thinking of adding silver bezels (not chrome) to match the trim as well, or maybe grey faces of the dials. Still not sure but more inclining to the bezels. Trying to keep it sensible, inclinig a little bit to a resto-mod idea.
      Plus there's grey stitching on the black leather seats, wheel and stick, otherwise the interior is all black
