Part of the tunnel complex is believed to go back to the mid-19th century at least, but the current structure dates from the early part of the Second World War, having been built to protect the beach, a likely invasion point.
Sections of the tunnel are unlined, particularly the first length up from the original entrance, while other sections have either a brick wall facing or irregularly spaced brick piers and vaulted corrugated steel roofs above. Nearer the cliff face erosion has taken its toll and most of the machine gun post’s original 0.6m thick reinforced concrete front wall and brick facing have now fallen away
The post was initially manned by the 70th Battalion The Buffs until November 1940 when the 5th Battalion Royal Marines Commandos took over from them. Their local headquarters was in the nearby village at Curfew House on Kingsdown Road (now the Royal British Legion local headquarters and a private house) and to keep themselves amused they made practice attacks on local regiments.

People do not fully understand war unless they have been in it. The effort put into it all was truly amazing. Thanks for video guys.
you're right, i completely understand war, because i have played every call of duty!
The thing is the people fighting I. The wars haven't got a clue wot they even fighting for its on a need to know basis depending on rank
Lets not forget war makes MONEY in arms dealing!@@dominic8520
Yes till then they think it's pubg
عليكم. تجربة. الدخول. ليلا. لهده. الانفاق. الغريبة. 😈😊🙂😷
25 years ago I would visit St Margaret’s Bay. I believe the pebbles on the beach there have mounted up over the years as that emplacement does not look as high off the beach as I remember it. Good video, thanks for getting up there and showing us the interior.
Brilliant explore, didnt know these tunnels existed!! I am so interested in ww2, the old buildings, bunkers etc, find it all very fascinating, love history. You need to come to Scotland on a road trip, plenty of old, abandoned crofts and "big houses" as the locals will say. 😉😊
For all the likes I get in this comment I’ll actually do wall sits
Back in my grade school days we had a physical fitness program called the presidential physical fitness achievement award. Several times a year we were measured on our physical fitness. In order to get the award we had to be able to perform a certain amount of pushups, sit-ups, pull-ups, 100 yard dash, softball throw, and rope climb. Not being able to pull oneself and a very small pack up a rope, that’d be embarrassing.
When I was a kid on the 1950s there was a partially bricked up entrance almost by the road I recall. It leads to that gun nest and a lot more. We were caught and council bricked it in more solidly.
I love the history of places like that and the workmanship that went into it excellent explore nice one 👍👍💯
89th! The effort you guys to get to some places is staggering. The videos you put out shows that it’s worth the danger! Roger in Pierre South Dakota USA
Was heart stopping watching you ascend and descend but you all did well. Whoever would have guessed they were there xx
Cheers Gaynor, yeah was very sketchy just relying on that old rope! But we live to tell the tale 😁👍
Thank god xx
Wimps
Nice one Alex enjoyed that made me laugh again rey face climbing up 🤣🤣
Haha! Always a good laugh mate! Cheers mate 😁👍
To the brother struggling to climb. Use that amazing determination to lose the weight mate haha. Trust me it made my life so much easier, you'll love it feeling like a feather
That’s amazing hidden in the cliffs. Class.
Thanks mate 😁👍
How ironic - we were prepared then for an invasion that never happened and now..................... Very interesting video guys, never heard of this one before.
Thanks Angels One Five! And cheers for watching, glad you enjoyed 👍
That was a cool bunker , very straight and clean . Climbing in and out required some effort but well worth the strain . A big thank you to yourself and Steve and Ray for putting that one together , till next time , Stuart in Canada ..
Well done to Ray, this seemed more of a tricky climb than some of the other ones he’s struggled with. Looked like a commando coming down at the end lol !
Great video
He was very commando like until the 3 slip ups at the end 🤣🤣
Cheers New Forest Explorer 👍
Amazing find guys, my great uncle was one of the soldiers protecting our coast line with the Worcestershire regiment ❤
Excellent explore guys really enjoyed this video
Cool video mate don't think I could do that
Great video you wouldn't see me climbing Ray always struggling lol interesting video well done
Nice one, cheers Claire!
And yeah it is a bit of a challenge lol
1st class video to watch thank you take care kind regards from me kenneth🤩🤩🤩
Wow it’s a stunning landscape. I love your videos. They have mystery and adventure. They also take me along and also back in time.
Thanks for checking the videos out Linda! Glad you're enjoying them 😊
Thank you for sharing this, I'm long in the tooth now but still would love to see these places you go to. Spent two weeks 40 years ago when I was in my 30s going round Jersey with my father in and out every bunker, Fort tunnel we could find. Love this history so we'll done for sharing.
So how did the original builders get in and out? Did they seal off an old entrance or something? Good video.
good vid mate
Cheers mate! 😁👍
Thats a place to bring a metaldetector, in the hallways, sometimes there can be coins, rings and othere things left behind :-) Cheers lads from Denmark
Great idea! Cheers for watching 👍
Well cool. Looked awesome. Great video.
Thanks Gail
Enjoyed that 👍. Seemed very dry in there compared to many WW2 bunkers etc no doubt due to its unique position in a chalk cliff. Looked like it was built only a few weeks ago.
One rope is for the rucksack the other is for you; it makes getting in and out easier
Here in Holland we have the marl caves, we explored them to. Every time so much fun😁😁
Thanks for sowing this.
Nice, the Marl caves sound cool, I'll check that out 👍 thanks for watching glad you enjoyed
Great Vid😁👍
Great vid 👍🏻 i've been in soo many bunkers around dover & deal back in 2005, wish i still lived in dover 😢
ODT3 thanks!
It was my first visit to Dover. Amazing place!! Will be more Dover explores coming so keep your eyes peeled 😁👍
Is it cool in there. Looks naturally chilly. Great exploring y'all.
Good job mate. You made it look easy. That tunnel that ends in the cliff drop 😰 Freaky. Love the underground bunker and it's position means that vandals can't get to it. 😁😎
Really cool! Thanks for sharing!!
As always, thank you for another great insight and knowing that you have a challenge to get there & watching Ray climbing up & down on these is interesting, Rays face! 😂, your like Spiderman! ❤️
Your welcome Victoria! Glad you enjoyed the video 😁👍
I've often look at that and wondered how far back it went. Well done, stay safe lads.
I know I haven’t been watching for long ( and going backwards) but I do worry about Ray, he seems quite fragile , I am so glad you look out for him and ask him quite a lot how’s he doing and offering help 😍
Yeah we all look out for each other, never leave a man behind and all that!
I wonder where the opening came out where you could hear voices. Absolutely brilliant explore, I was right there with you!
That was very awesome and brave 💖💖
Thanks as always Jackie 😁👍
@@VacantHaven 💖
Wow very interesting bunker, so glad you all made it down carefully on that rope 😂. Great video 👍🏼
Awesome explore !! 👏
Great climb guys - omg those ropes though 😱 you’ve definitely got guts …. amazing climbing skills!
Great to see inside the tunnels - Fab filming 👍👍
Thanks Trish glad you enjoyed that one!
Yeah, one hell of a climb relying on old rope 😬 but we live to tell the story, and make more videos 😁👍
Pretty hairy guys but we’ll done!! Unbelievable what’s in the cliff, how did they build it? Thanks for the vid x
Thanks Barb!
The army had a tunneling division dedicated to building these bunkers and tunnels. Amazing feat of engineering really
You bloody bloke using two ropes is dangerous
This is my home town, used to climb that as a kid lol lots to explore around here if you come again I'll buy you guys a beer for all your great adventures ...
Helmets might have been an idea on that one lads!
Go get'm boys!
I wish I were physically there to.
This is the next best thing.
Thank you for sharing.
Great vid though you could’ve taken the drone to the top of the cliff to show other ( blocked ) entrances maybe 🤷♂️🤷♂️👍👌
Were you as I was, a bit disappointed that there weren't any antechambers? Do you think they might have been blocked off? I can't see how these tunnels would have been to much help in case of an invasion....
Respect from northeastern Pennsylvania
Bit of oil in the sea there, could see the rainbow on the shore with the drone footage at start.
I think it might be the way I've edited or colourised the footage mate, I'll have a look
Yeah it looks a bit like oil, but it might be minerals separated out. I got a nice couple of hematite pieces from St Margaret's bay many years ago, from chalk that had fallen from the cliffs. One was like a reddish coloured bubbly blob and the other was like a spikey thing with four sided spikes sticking out all around it
a great vid
Thanks Kernow appreciate it mate 👍
Great explore lov seeing this video, wow... Can't wait for more!! Like this...
@@geofflee3090 thanks mate! Really glad you enjoyed it and will have plenty more to come 😁👍
Wow amazing great video
Awesome video vacanthaven 👍 👍 👍
👍👍👍
Oh my daze, that getting in & getting out part, but I’m sure not as bad as the person who went up with nothing & put those ropes there, another awesome explore mate 👋💀👍
Yeah it was sketchy relying on that old rope for sure! But big up the person who put it up for us 😉👍
Used to be a ladder 🪜
@@kyleharwood8186 would have been easier 🤣
Great show you 3 done brilliant 🤩 really looking out for each other please stay safe and take care always keep doing your great work thankyou so very much appreciated 👍
Nobody got wet.
Excellent work fellas.
Fascinating 👍
What strange things these boys are showing us..!? TY boys!!
Like these . My dad was in the RAF as a fitter . Saw too much in reclaiming crashed aircraft . around Lincoln .
Actually looking accross St Margarets Bay, at where Ian Flemming lived and wrote Moonraker. Good pub the Coastguard.
Dover is other direction around cliffe face. Mix of Napoleonic and WW2 tunnelling.
Too Awesome! 😉👍
Go Ray, go.
Where’s Batman’s batclaw when you need it huhhh. That rope look well dodgy! Must have been a bit hairy getting down. Don’t fancy that. Great video guys. Enjoyed. What’s next?
🤣🤣 yep, could have done with that!
My hats off to you guys I wouldn't do that it looks scary but great video thoe
Thanks! Yeah a very sketchy climb, but well worth it 👍
@@VacantHaven your welcome
That was brilliant scary thought
I could sense you was getting a little ticked off with Ray! More of a hindrance than a help on this one!
Great video, but helmets and fresh rope would have been a good idear.
I wonder why they sealed up the rest of the tunnel? Maybe it was starting to collapse so they blocked it off so nobody got hurt. What a cool place.
that bricked off bit is at the end of prom me thinks
Did the soldiers had to climb up the same cliff as you, or did they have a way in from the other side. Could not have been easy to get the weapons etc up those cliffs and into the bunker!
At around 10.28 ish seconds, there was writing on the wall in chalk saying "Dave D 1912".
Wow! More observant than me, cheers 😁👍
Why hold both ropes?
That seems a lot of tunnel just for a machine gun post. Why so much space?
Learn from an old rock climber. Never trust any in situ ropes you may come across. Might look OK until you see the remnants of it as you’re lying on your back in agony. Interesting explore though!😅
I chatted to a local couple there who told me that bunker was specifically designed to hold a flame thrower. A massive oil drum was positioned on the hill for this very purpose !!
A bit of context would help what, when, why...etc. An interesting construction needs explanation.
I think its Zelda Ocarina of Time that there is a square on the side of a cliff and i was so mad trying to figure out how to get in there lol i finally did but now i can't remember how i did it it was later on in the game i remember but this is what this reminds me off
Don't remember that part of Ocarina of time and I completed that lol.
Maybe one of the temples or something?
Cheers for watching 😀👍
Great! Can you please tell me where it is?
"Don't laugh that's the key!!!" 😂😅😂❤
Were did you get your information?
Was looking for the other two guys channel too
That was a very cool exploration. I enjoy watching your finds. Why the masks though? You are outside, in the fresh air, but wearing a mask. Or no mask, then when you get into the tunnel or bunker, one of you wears a mask
Thanks for the kind words Pete!
I always where a mask in bunkers and abandoned buildings as there is a lot of dust and particles in the air. Although not 100% protection, it stops the majority of stuff getting in the lungs!
Very funny climbing and wearing a mask😂
Many hrs spent making that bunker and tunnels.
4:35 That's an a** grabbing situation. ROFL.
hey vacant, steve n ray
Hey there Glyn!
wicked good job stay safe lol
I would have bought some climbing rope, carabiners and harnesses, helmet ..and an mand s sandwich..
Not as bad as the scene on the 'guns of navarone'.
How did they get all the material up there to build the tunnels it's amazing FJB
like the video✌
So we'll mannered ty
But it did go further... 2 dead ends.. nah man it went further
Wow
I believe this cave was re-purposed, as a military bunker. Not a very good bunker, when you think bunker, either. I think this cave was dug out, in pre historic times, and was occupied by soldiers during the war. It doesn't make any military sense, to use that much man power, to dig a relatively small hole in a cliff, by the beach. What exactly are you going to do in there, besides hide? It would be easy to destroy with large naval gun as well. I don't buy the official narrative at all. Thanks for exploring it though! It truly is amazing!!
That tunnel complex doesn't make much sense. It just seems to be tunnels with no 'rooms' for munitions storage or sleeping quarters.
how did they get all the bricks down there and where was cement mixed up? also how did they dig them out and where did al, the spoil go?
Anyone mention the amount of brick and concrete inside these corridors? The efforts to haul that up and the time with hammer and chisels perhaps a little powder stick here or there. Quite a bit of work. One opening to guard that a single rocket would end whomever would be there. Another question, why is that guy masked up? Is covid in that bunker or someone not showering often?
That cliff is chalk it would be fairly easy to tunnel but needed to be supported which is why the brick and culvert.
Well done lads enjoyed this and no MATT well done Ray started to enjoy some different URBEX send me some links please xx
Easy? We climbed up to Culzean Castle caves to party impossible to get back when tide in so 12hrs party free from police etc! 🏴🙏🏴
Was that a German helmet with bullet holes in it at the very beginning on the right side of the tunnel? At first I thought it was a landmine lol But then you pan back around to it again and it looks like a helmet with bullet holes at 5:49
