  • Repairing a beloved Keen sandal using (black) Shoe Goo.
Easy repair - works GREAT. Expect YEARS of additional use from these sandals. Other silicone glues / adhesives will probably work fine, but Shoe Goo is specifically for shoe repair:

Thanks for this! I had a pair of Keens and a pair of Merrells do this at about the same time. Merrell customer service was AmAzing. Keen was zero help, basically said throw them away and get a new pair. love Keens, but they know all about this issue and refuse to make changes. Your video will help me by some more time without giving them more $$!

I've had my Keen H2Os several years. Pretty much city walking with occasional wet environments. No problems until I moved south to Mexico and started swimming with them in the rivers for an hour or so at a time. Stayed together for almost a year, but both are now flapping. Want to salvage them for old times' sake, plus the rest of the sandals are still functioning. I will follow the video and cross my fingers.

Keen must be using a substandard adhesive. Every pair I own has been repaired.

Indeed! EVERY pair has required the same sole delamination repair. Lousy construction and, poor customer service. Consider Merrell for your next purchase. For this style, one is better off buying a cheap readily available clone.

Me too. They should’ve fixed the issue years ago. Too expensive to have crappy soles that always come apart

The soles of mine are cracking apart. Still very good tread just splitting all over. I barely wear them.

This has been one of my most popular videos for some reason. None of them are monetized, just sharing information thus far. You should have no trouble if you follow those instructions loosely. Shugu is very easy to work with. A big thing to always remember with any adhesive is to use clamps. (This is even more true of something like Elmer's glue with wood).
You probably raise a good point about using them in water, especially brackish or saltwater, though I was hiking in a slot canyon in Utah / Arizona and freshwater and they fell apart on a long hike, putting me a bit at risk.

I have a bunch of pairs of Keens sandals. Luckily, got all but one pair when they made them right. Most recent pair, the soles started separating. I tried shoe goo, but it didn't hold. Tried liquid nails; didn't hold. But you showed me where I made a mistake - not cleaning the surfaces with acetone. Thanks.

I love my Keen sandals! In fact, now I buy Keen period. Sneakers, winter boots, etc.

This is really helpful. Thank you! We have preferred keens for many years in my family. I recently purchased a new/used pair for the first time. Unfortunately, the soles came apart upon first use. I will try this on the keens and my favorite boots (really don't want to throw them away) I tried to repair them with other glue.

I think I'll throw mine in the wash first to clean them. And then I'll try your Technique.

Thanks for the helpful video! I used Barge, but your video was still very helpful!!! After about 4 years and multiple pairs in my family, it seems that Keens only last about a year or two if you get them wet often, as we do.

I'm doing this today because my Keen soles separated....after 10 years. They have fence stain on them, and my wife wants me to replace, but they're so comfortable!

I've tried all kinds of Keens. Best so far is Newports in Bison leather, the back and side parts are all one leather piece, so don't have the stitching failure points you found in your nylon-strapped models. Strongly recommend. So far they haven't delaminated, either.

The bottom layer sole on one of the two pair of keens I have finally fell off while hiking a slot canyon in Utah, in sticky mud, which could have been rather dangerous. I looked at the pair you are referring to and saved it to my Amazon cart, but I bought another pair of keen. It appears that the Soule are more of a vinyl or plastic rather than rubber oh, and they have a cheaper look and feel to them. Trying to lower the bottom line and keep the price competitive apparently resulted in lowering the quality. I'll try to order a pair of those Newports once my backup pair of keen wear out, has it's always nice to have two pair of sports sandals!

Keen Newport leather sole detached when I was hiking in PCT. I used rubber band to prevent it falling apart. Very unreliable shoes for hiker.

    Good job.
One of my Keen Newport leather sandals ripped. The leather ripped from the base. I am reading a lot about Keen’s coming apart right about the time that the warranty expires.

Before you apply the shoe goo, or better adhesive, I'd suggest you scuff them up well with some sandpaper anything between 25 and 120 grit, really scrub the surface well with soapy water, wipe down with rubbing alcohol, and after applying one of those adhesives recommended, use some strong clamps to apply as much pressure evenly throughout to make the adhesive work well. If you don't have any clamps, you might put a board on top of it and some heavy cinder blocks on top of that, or just drive your car, four-wheeler or riding more on top of that board to play a great deal of pressure to it for at least several hours.

@@daphne5179 I'm guessing your shoes are over your old, but you never know if you go on the website and find a way to submit photos and tell them how much you love your sandals and previous ones you've bought etc, if a human being in this country reads it, you might score on a replacement pair.

If your Keen sandals delaminate like this or strings unravel etc. during the warranty period, be sure to file a claim online on their website, as I got a free pair by doing so. Sadly, they probably outsource customer support and find it cheaper just to quickly give away another Chinese or other foreign country cheap labor produced pair, rather than repair or spend any time talking to you on the phone.
I do love them though, and it was great getting a second pair just for some unraveling strings that I was able to repair.

@@ronbenfield6182 No one caught that till now, thanks for the edit. I just bought a pair of Keen Bison at a family shoe store for around $119, because I needed them out in Idaho. That was two weeks ago and Amazon had them for only $85!

Every single pair of my Keens has had sole separation. From a utility standpoint theyre a great shoe but ugly. So I always buy the ones on clearance.

I have had maybe a dozen pairs of keens in my family, and although we have loved wearing them, every pair has come unglued. One did so in the middle of a long tubing adventure losing the whole bottom in the water. Another episode was near the end of a descent from a long mountain hike. I would have been even more pissed if it had been on the uphill climb! I will NEVER buy another pair they are so pricy and made so cheaply and CANNOT be trusted. I began wearing them years ago when a friend made near to a 1000 mile hike in a pair. The quality took a nosedive somewhere in the last few years...Im really trying to find a good substitute....buyer beware!!!!!!! Never Again!!!!!

2018AUG25 UPDATE: Repairs still holding up, but remainder of original glued portion came loose, and top began tearing where strap is embedded. I re-glued entire loose section, including tear; I clamped repaired sections while they dried/hardened, & put piece of a plastic shopping bag between clamp's pad and Keen so clamp wouldn't stick to glue. Yet another extension of life. Hopefully the new sandals are better glued and w/ tougher or reinforced rubber so straps don't tear them. I've used regular clear silicone caulk on some soles. Anyone find much difference between silicone caulk/glue and Shoe Goo, or silicone marine glues?

My heels wore out, I had no clue there was a Warranty on Keen Sandals. I still have the sandal, however I can't prove when I purchased them. I love the sandal but the hard black heels on both shoes wore out, they're slanted off to the outside of the heel, now the solf tan heel has worn even worse. It's making me walk funny.

Did the repair work and do you recommend Shoe Goo?

    • @musicbymark
      @musicbymark  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Shoe Goo is really good stuff specifically formulated for that purpose. However, like all adhesives, you need to have the surface extremely clean. Ideally wipe it down with acetone, but even soapy water or rubbing alcohol a better than nothing, and of course it needs to be dry. I've had some shoe Goo failures where it's hard to clean the area like on my echo dress shoes where the soul was hollow and the patches would amount to plugs of shoe Goo that would fall out. Keen souls are solid, so you have more surface area for adhesion. What I do for additional adhesion when there is a chunk of rubber missing or a hole in the shoe bottom, is drill some holes approximately 1/8 in diameter into the solid soul at different angles and take a little bit of fiberglass insulation mixed in with the shoe Goo and I poke some of the goo and fiberglass into those little drill holes for additional grip and that seems to work pretty well, but I haven't had to go to that extent with the Keen sandals yet. My repairs definitely extended my sandals lives an extra 1 to 3 years.
