    This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage PHEV, plug-in hybrid compact SUV. The Kia Sportage PHEV is priced so well, comes loaded with standard features making it a tough one to beat for value! We have the base model for $44,995 CAD/$38,490 USD and you won’t believe what you get. A 12.3” touchscreen with Navigation, a 4.2” instrument cluster, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto a wireless charger, heated and ventilated front seats, quilted leatherette upholstery, a power driver and passenger seat, driver seat memory, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats and a power liftgate. Hold on there’s more…. Advanced forward collision avoidance, lane keep and follow assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors. In the US, there are a few differences, on the base trim Kia Sportage PHEV you get a 12.2” instrument display but you’ll have to move up to the top trim for $42,990 USD to get a power passenger seat, driver seat memory, ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Looking for a few more features? The Canadian top trim of the Kia Sportage Plug-in will cost you an extra $3,400 ($48,395), that’s where you’ll find, projection LED headlights, a 12.3” digital instrument cluster, Harman Kardon Sound System, a surround view monitor, remote park assist, highway driving assist and rear parking collision avoidance assist. These features are also available in the US. The Kia Sportage PHEV has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an electric motor, a 6-speed automatic transmission and a combined 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. 55 km/34 miles of EV range, standard AWD and a 13.8 kWh battery. It earns a combined city/highway rating of 2.8Le/100km, 84 MPGe. With the battery depleted it gets 6.7L/100km, 35 MPG combined. This Kia Sportage plug-in hybrid qualifies for the Canadian Federal rebate of $5,000 and incentives in participating provinces. Unfortunately, the Sportage PHEV no longer qualifies for a tax credit up to $7500 in the US. New rules have come in to affect, both the vehicle and battery need to be made in the US to qualify.

    Great video, guys.
    USA here. You guys are winning Up North!
    Down here we have fewer features, no incentives, and $6000 market adjustment.
    Plenty of us placed orders, based on the previous $7500 incentives. Poof💨! Gone!
    We’ve enjoyed ours for 1 month, with no real issues until 2 days ago, when we experienced a very dangerous situation in my 2023 Sportage PHEV X-Line. I was going 65 mph, on the highway, and activated cruise control. The car set the cruise speed to 110mph on its own, and began to accelerate. Cruise worked fine before and after the 10 minute period, when the car wanted to go 110mph.
    Kia was notified and have received my video of the occurrence. They have contacted me already and I am awaiting further follow up.

The format you both follow while filming your videos is very structured, easy to follow and most importantly it includes all the information that us consumers need when researching vehicles we are considering buying. I specially love how you always include numbers for the US market. Defiently the best TH-cam vehicle review channel!!! Well done Zach and Andrea!!

      I couldn't agree more with Jose's response and we both were watching yesterday coincidentally... Saturday thus. 👍
      I further wish to add my consideration on Andrea's & Zach's share of their views on this Canadian model.
      I just want to have a new fresh & recent review like this was coz I want to be updated yet again as DD in preparing myself prior to fetching my GT-PlusLine (Top trim) with All Season 19" tyres and outfitted with the electric retractable towhook (KIA model).
      Another thing are the rear lights, our version (Dutch in Europe) are full LED too as oppose to the Americas version. My "KIA Ora"... I've already chosen to ordain her this name (a Kiwi cultural greet), is a 2022 model that was ordered in March and it has already arrived in October 20th. I fundamentally wished & requested to have it delivered in January 2023 but was earlier informed that it may be in December (lucky me) while I wanted a month later... Reading from many FB Groups grouching away on their loooong waits (avg 8-18 months), I changed my request and accepted the Christmas package instead. It helped me saved two full months of Lease payment as a result... Yayyy!!! So, November it became and this 30th it shall be.
      In conclusion, I'm a 70 y.o. Retiree that testdrove the EV6 325 bhp too in Sept 2021and decided the Sportage is the choice over the Tucson, Santa Fe, EV6 & Ioniq5 as well. This model is adequate for just me and my wife and the two Puggies (H&H) partying behind in their given boot parlour.
      Why the PHEV one then asked and not the full EVs...?
      We don't travel much as of late and no need for a fast revver either hence, comfort and safety features to meet our traffic we have in Europe and esp. the charging costs and looonggg queues at the charge terminals on the highways... with all these considerations accounted, a PHEV is the right choice for Seniors, esp. when we have our own "Easee Home" (Norwegian model) charge terminal with 7,5m cable installed inside our garage and with load balancing coupled to it, FOC energy is plugged out from our 60x PVs @315kWh each. Hopefully never to use or depend on the highway chargers for the next 5 years of Lease but we opted the 3-years to be in time for the next generation for a full EV model.
      Luv both yr reviews with greetz from The Netherlands...

    Spoke to local dealership. You can’t order a Sportage PHEV. I then followed up with Kia Canada who confirmed dealers are NOT taking factory orders for the PHEV. You can wait for what’s sent to the dealers that’s built by Kia and have it allocated however that’s 18-24months due to the backlog of orders Kia is trying to fill. Why advertise a vehicle that you can’t buy!!?

      Absolutely right!! My biggest concern is that by the time your turn comes around, you've already watched Andrea & Zach's review for the 2024/2025 models & you'll realize that you've wasted your time and deposit, waiting for a car that no longer provides the same value that you initially placed the deposit for.

    Another fine review, and you were bang-on at the very end when you said to put your name on a list and wait. My order for its Hyundai twin, the Tucson PHEV, was placed on November 19, 2021, shortly before Hyundai Canada stopped taking orders for them. Hyundai Canada's most recent update to me said it would get built in December 2022 (then shipped from Korea). The build date slipped three times since the order was placed. I would imagine that Sportage PHEV purchasers will be in for an even longer wait.

    • @paulira7407
      @paulira7407 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on which state you live in, I'm going to say you will likely get the Kia before you get the Rav4 Prime. I have a 2021 Rav4 Prime and I was going to sell my Prime in order to get the 2022 Rav4 Prime XSE but I live in Texas. There is a guy on YT who has an updated list of Toyota dealers in the US and the amount of Rav4 Prime's that each dealer has received so far. Texas is a state that doesn't get that many Rav4 Prime's and therefore it looks like I'm stuck with my 2021 Rav4 Prime. I'm not complaining because it's a very good vehicle but I really wanted the 2022 Rav4 Prime XSE. I suppose I should feel lucky that I even got a Prime in the first place at MSRP in Texas last year.

    Another great review! Agreed! If you can get your hands on a Rav4 Prime, get it! it can be driven like a pure EV most of the time with its heat pump and stronger electric motors. Not to mention amazing resale value for the Prime. Sportage looks way more stylish and upscale than Rav4 Prime. With its amazing value, who cares if the ICE has to turn on when heating the cabin. Sportage PHEV truly give you a lot bang for the buck! well, can't get any of these vehicles anyways.. the wait time is ridiculous. we consumers nowadays don't get to choose the cars. We take whoever wants to sell the car to us,

    • @gregp.7148
      @gregp.7148 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's why you hang onto your existing car longer! These days you are also being hit with a 6-7% interest rate if you finance/lease most new vehicles. In 4 years you pay another 25% of the car's value to the manufacturer! That's just insane. Not worth buying (ie leasing/financing) a new car these days. And very few of us have the $40-50-60k to buy them outright.

    • @nickolastiguan
      @nickolastiguan ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It actually doesn’t make sense to use ICE for heat in a PHEV. Not sure if you have a hybrid, but even in extreme cold, the engine will turn itself off when the ECU thinks it is not needed; so it can take a long time to get heat. heat pump on the other hand = more efficient and almost instant heat. Not having a Heat pump was probably just a cost cutting decision.

    We bought the oh-so-similar Sorento PHEV back in June, and we are generally very happy with it. The obvious advantage of the Sorento is the third row. The subtle disadvantage: We have a 60-pound dog and she has some trouble staying on the 2nd-row captain's seat when we take a hard corner. I think she'd be more comfortable (and safer) on a 2nd row bench.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are SO right. We have a 2018 Sorento that's my wife's driver and the family's long distance cruiser. It's a top trim SX with numerous bells and whistles and my wife loves it. We've considered replacing it with the new PHEV version but nixed the idea when it became apparent that our 60+ lb 4 footed family member would have difficulty in the 2nd row captain chairs. And for some unfathomable reason KIA now offers a bench seat in only the lowest trims of the non-hybrid Sorento models. The Sportage may well be an option but it's certain we won't be purchasing our third Sorento.

    Good review. I too find that the Sportage is one of the most interesting PHEV offerings available right now but one thing not discussed here about the lack of heat pump is that in any kind of moderately colder weather you apparently never get in pure EV mode. People who want to experience the full EV mode shortly usually don't get to do it while other brands (with heat pumps) have no issue with it.
    Also the most generous rebate program in Canada (Quebec) penalizes the Korean twins due to its small battery.

    Great offering in the compact SUV segment. A few things I can't understand with the packaging is that you can get the red leather seats in the HEV but you cannot get it with the PHEV. When you get the PHEV, you get 19" wheels but you don't get that with the HEV. They are exactly the same vehicle other than one being a plug in version. Why don't they offer the same features??

    I live in San Francisco Bay Area. I purchased this exact trim a month ago and have been testing fuel efficiency. With full charging it can be driven just like a electric car, the engine never needs to be activated so crazyly high MPG. But when out of electricity, it only reaches to around 25 on highway, and 30 on city streets. I dont understand, I have been driving very conservatively. And the official number of Kia for this PHEV without electricity is around 35 mpg and I can only get around 25-30. I wonder if other owners have same problem?

    I prefer the Tucson PHEV, mainly because it is cheaper in the US by over 3K, also because it is a bit smaller.
    I do like the Sportage grille better and the larger infotainment is nice. Don't need the sunroof.
    The Sportage price gets close to the RAV4 Prime, with more standard features. The Prime has a better electric range, electric only power and better highway efficiency. None of these get the federal incentive anymore.
    Tucson PHEV seems to exist only on paper or I can't find one anywhere in a 250 mile radius.

    I really have grown fond of your reviews. I just have trouble trusting South Korean quality control. Anyway I've got to ask, why are you so happy when you find out vehicles have a standard transmission over an ecvt? I understand standard CVT transmissions typically are substandard from the get-go as far as longevity and reliability goes, but in hybrid vehicles, especially Toyota hybrid vehicles the ECTV is bulletproof and you have no mechanical drivetrain to maintain or wear out especially in an all-wheel drive vehicle.
    I guess I'm asking why you prefer a 6-speed transmission so often.
    Thank you and keep up the good work.

      More often than not CVTs make the car feel a lot slower than horsepower numbers suggest, especially when it comes to passing power on the highway. The result is an uninspired, boring, lazy feeling engine.

    Thanks for the great video. My wife is looking for a new car and this would be her 4th Kia. She loves them. She had the first model Sportage when they came to Canada. Unfortunately after calling 3 dealers we gave up. 1 to 2 years is their best guess. They have no idea how long it will take to get one. Ridiculous and disappointing. Hate to have to downgrade to the gas model and that is 4 to 6 months. I wonder if all the other PHEV's are in the same boat for availability?
