Tauranga person here. Kiwi's have a lot of cultural significance, but especially for Maori. Hippos and capybara or a random zoo animal may have some cultural significance at home but I'd suggest not as much as the Kiwi to NZers. The legend of the Kiwi is that Tane Mahuta asked for a bird to become the guardian of the trees, and none would, until the Kiwi stepped forward. His legs were shortened and his wings taken so he'd be close to the trees to guard them. Quite the sacrifice. Kiwi aren't just an animal in the zoo or an exhibit to us. They're Taonga, a living treasure.

Spent 44 years in the Merchant Navy, ( finished Chief Engineer) visited 76 Countries over 220 ports. Looking forward to seeing some of the Ports you will be visiting that I have been, was in Auckland a few time, as well as Wellington, & Lylttleton.
What an amazing time you are having! Those fish and chips looked so fresh and delicious. It's clear to see how much Benj loves New Zealand and the memories he has from travelling there with his family.

Made me laugh when the tour guide said they got their nickname because of shoe polish. Living in a tourist destination myself we locals often make up stories for the tourists. They got the name kiwis during the war correct but it was because of the kiwi bird on their uniform badges

So glad you are enjoying your adventure and your time in NZ. We are English but moved out to NZ in 2005 and love it too. I loved the way you pronounce 'Kapiti' when you had your ice creams lol as that's where we lived until last year when we moved to the South Island. Anyway safe travels, have fun Mr and Mrs Lever! x

Every time you say Arcadia, i think of resident evil the movie because they were looking for something called the Arcadia and found out it was a ship. Just found your channel. Congrats on your upcoming marriage. My husband was in the US NAVY and when he came back , I had a vacation planned on a cruise ship. He looked at me and said, “Seriously?” I said, “It’s different being on a cruise with the Navy. You don’t have someone coming up to you asking if you would like a beer!” 🤣 Ww were newlyweds when this happened. I actually hadn’t thought of him being on a Navy Ship for 6 months. Luckily, he did have a great time!

I'm glad your enjoying NZ but personally I believe Taupo is more beautiful than Rotorua. Ive also eaten at that restaurant and it was crazy busy and the food was ordinary. Ah well enjoy the rest of your adventures.
Kia ora! Im a watcher from Rotorua! I actually worked at the agrodome a few years ago! The sulfur pits are amazing and are kinda dotted everywhere in rotorua. Very jealous of your cruise! Its amazing.

So glad you are enjoying your adventure and your time in NZ. We are English but moved out to NZ in 2005 and love it too. Every time you say Arcadia, i think of resident evil the movie because they were looking for something called the Arcadia and found out it was a ship. Just found your channel. Congrats on your upcoming marriage. My husband was in the US NAVY and when he came back , I had a vacation planned on a cruise ship. He looked at me and said, “Seriously?” I said, “It’s different being on a cruise with the Navy. You don’t have someone coming up to you asking if you would like a beer!” 🤣 Ww were newlyweds when this happened. I actually hadn’t thought of him being on a Navy Ship for 6 months. Luckily, he did have a great time!

I'm glad your enjoying NZ but personally I believe Taupo is more beautiful than Rotorua. Ive also eaten at that restaurant and it was crazy busy and the food was ordinary. Ah well enjoy the rest of your adventures.
Kia ora! Im a watcher from Rotorua! I actually worked at the agrodome a few years ago! The sulfur pits are amazing and are kinda dotted everywhere in rotorua.

I have never fancied a cruise myself but it’s interesting to see how they operate and how it works when you stop over. Are there many other people your age at all or mostly elderly? Not that it matters I guess as I prefer older people anyway but just wondering what the general vibe is like on board 😊
