I met Eric once, onstage, after a concert in The Stadium Dublin Ireland. 70s. It was one of Eric's drunken nights. He had broken a string earlier. I was at the side of the stage and asked if i could come up to find it as a souvenir. His manager gave me permission to come up and look for it. Carl Radle helped me to find it and did. What a gent. Asked him a couple of question about the tour and he never tried to dodge me. The manager came over and I heard him say to Carl " he'll be the death of me someday " obviously referring to Eric. I asked the manager if he could get me an autograph. He sent a stagehand back to get Eric's autograph. A few minutes later Eric appeared with pen and the front page of Hotpress magazine ( which he was on ) in his hand. He got Carl, Roger Forester, Jamie Oldaker and the supporting artist Freddie White all to sign it. Then he signed it himself and said "there you go kid, how's that" in a slurred voice. The greatest moment of my late teenage years. I've followed his career ever since through thick and thin. He was so nice to me. I'm so glad he made it through the madness and is the happy family man he is now.
Great story and memory to have! My dad used to go see him on Friday and Saturday nights in London in 60s when they used to play places like the Marquee Club etc he used to be right into the blues and saw all the guys back then its what got me into blues and rock when I was a kid..
@@gerardbyrne7929 I remember the gigs at the Dublin Stadium, when I saw Eric play that venue he had the same musicians you mention, with him, Carl, etc..but it was Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance band, that opened for him, as I still have the offical programme from that concert...Back in them days the Dublin Stadium was the place to see, hear, and afterwards meet your heros..I also met JJ Cale in that same venue, Rory Gallagher had also come along on that same night to see, and talk to JJ Cale after the gig..Dublin Stadium was one of the best venues to see, hear, and meet up later with the bands from Chuck Berry to Sonny Terry and Brownie Mc gee...Great memories in Dublin...Eire
I met and had a few words with Eric, he was with Pattie Boyd at the time..Believe me just a normal nice man, who took time to talk..A few years later he played a small venue with full band , no stage floor level , roughly 200 people in the hall, it was a warm up gig for his American tour at the time, and to promote a new album, it was a gig to remember...Great he is still around..
I know a Lot of people in EC’s small circle . Met his band many times. All very cool good folks. Never met him though . He leaves the venue very quickly .
If interested check out, "1981 Irish Tour a look back" Eric Clapton . These dates in Ireland served as a warm up for a massive US tour to promote Another Ticket album. Albert Lee, and Gary Brooker were in his band at this time..There were no reviews and very little detail re this short tour, I got to one of these gigs it was in the local youth center with no more than 200 people, and no stage, and Eric and band was in top form on the night...he also took time to mingle with the crowd before and after the gig...A night to remember...

Shame to see them get older and lose so many of the greats in recent years! Let's hope Clapton around and making music for some years yet!!🙏 Cheers from London 🏴🇬🇧
E.C. has dine so much for others. What a wonderful example of unselfishness and empathy for humankind. So courageous when it came to the vaccines. Thanks for all the great music!!
While waiting to cross 55th St and Fifth Ave. In Manhattan I once overheard parents speaking to a child in such a thoughtful way I abandoned my usual disinterest of other pedestrians and looked up to see who these folks were. It was Eric and Lory, and they were speaking to Conor, while just waiting for the light to change like everyone else. Who would have thought such a tragedy was iminent just a few months later....😥😣
An uncle of mine recounted his story meeting Eric in the 80s, also in NYC. They were staying in the same hotel and my uncle saw Eric in the lobby, he ran to catch Eric in the elevator, he even held the door just to get on. It was just Eric and my uncle in the elevator, n my uncle turned to him n said “I’m your number one fan.” Eric looked him in the eye and said “Thank you” and got off before my uncle did.
I'm notoriously shy and private, and have gone out of the way to avoid even local public celebrities. One person I'd love to chat with even for a half a minute would be EC, but I doubt I would do more than wave and smile. It's nice to see he's rather laid back and polite. Pretty spry, too.
I remember a friend and co worker telling me after going out for lunch in NYC and returning to the office that she had seen Clapton on the street walking with his guitar in a case back in the early 1990's.....she was starstruck and couldn't believe that he would walk around in NYC... .
I met EC in Rhodes Greece 2007 we chatted for about 5 minutes about the cream reunion in 2005 which I attended he was reluctant to stop and chat and insisted no photos
Sux to be famous sometimes Guessing lol Check out his buying back of Bobby Whitlocks royalties from the dominoes . W o Bobby’s knowledge . Also the amount he gives to charities , especially The Crossroads Center. EC gets up to around 100 guitars , he auctions them all off for Charity. He screws up like all humans . Yes. But his charitable work might surprise you.
Eric Clapton by chance happened to have a seat right next to me at a concert at The Beacon theater. I had no camera and cell phones had not even existed so I have no photo proof. he asked me if I knew the name of a particular song. The concert was the backup band for Paul Simon;s Graceland album. Crazy right.
the price of fame comes with a certain amount of baggage, seems Clapton remains less hostile than others, e.g. B.Dylan has a very short fuse for others who know not the rights of privacy, tanks for sharing
Eric I hoped would pop into the gig we played in Ripley Surrey Uk the day before his daughters wedding…. We were raising money for the village hall (his home village)…. Unfortunately he didn’t rock up…but his half Sister popped in, said i was a “great guitarist” and “quite hot”… yup!! That’s my claim to fame 😂👌🏻….the band said they’d never hear the end of that tail…. A few years later I burned out… haven’t seen those “mates” since…. Needless to say the band broke up…. Ahhh Rock n’ roll 🤘🏻
Yes he did…but that was THEN back when he was an addicted racist and believed England should be governed by white men lol. I’m sure he’s changed…🙄 let’s ask Robert Cray
Eric will always be my musical hero but I have issues with his stance on covid some things that point towards racism which I find bizarre in his later life
Fantastic musician and person. He is and has been generous and humble, hope he remains long years around, he deserves it. Cheers

Every time one of those great musicians dies, I tell my wife, "it's the end of an era". Too many eras ending lately, unfortunately.
Eric has been warm to strangers for such a long time. If I ever came across him, I'd probably be shell-shocked and stand still for a long time.
Me as well...Eric.blends in...I think I wouldn't even notice him

@@danwebb4418 I know! I've read about plenty of such instances in his autobiography.

I've seen Eric perform 4 times, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1994

To be fair Clapton would refer to himself as someone of no significance. "Just a guy that plays guitar"
