Buy the best that you can afford. Upgrade and add to your equipment as you go. I have wrapped my body in a poncho, slept throughout the night in a heavy rain and woke up dry in the morning. It doesn’t take much and the more experienced you get the easier it is.
Good choices and ratinal. Might have worked for me if I were 30 years younger but at 80, with mobility and medical issues I am no longer up to challenges. I still maintain my bug out bags and EDC kits and fire arms but only for a hunker down at home senario..
Not all Dollar Trees are the same. In my location in Oregon, some items on your list are unfortunately unavailable. Thanks for a great video, awesome content.
Used to use Sawyer filters but Walmart quit selling them and now has a $20 Red Cross filter that works with (Smart) regular water bottles plus has a carbon filter element. The 6x8 Poly Tarp at Home Depot is heavy duty, has grommets every 2 feet, you can fold a 2x6 floor and use remaining 6x6 in a plow point. While at Home depot you can buy a 2x10 foot roll of Reflectix, fold into thirds creating a 24x40 inch torso pad for ground insulation and duct tape the sides to keep pad folded in position, you will have a pocket in that Reflectix to stick additional clothes inside as extra insulation.
the Sawyer mini filter screws onto a soft drink bottle. I just checked mine with a 16 oz coke bottle and it fits. you shouldn't need another water bottle if you buy a couple of one liter sodas. A metal bottle might be all you need in addition to the Sawyer filter and a couple of soda bottles.
You can fit up to a 2L pop bottle or water bottle preferably. Bpa free if able. If you have a Wal-Mart nearby they have Sawyer mini and a bottle with it!
Hello 👋 my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing this informative and entertaining video. You did a fine job. All the best to you. Stay safe out there. Jason should enjoy those gifts. 😊
I would have bought bank line at Walmart instead of paracord. Especially for the time of year. Also, if you go to the tool aisle they have more and possibly cheaper paracord options. But overall that’s a good starter kit for $100!
Buying on a single day in peak season you did pretty well. Most of us start off with stuff like that (if not worse) when we were kid's so it isn't that big a leap if you were one of those kid's.
I like your philosophy of use criteria for these items JJ, but when I hear the term "survival kit" I think two things before anything else -- small enough to have with me almost always, and utilitarian enough to contain or gather the essentials. The 4-in-1 whistle is a good start. For water, the aquatabs and a liter plastic bag. Also, the Aquamira Frontier water straw -- good for 30 gal. AAA flashlight. Mini Bic. Small Ferro Rod. A few firestarters. Mylar blanket. Fresnel lens and small signal mirror. Wire saw (for use as a bow saw only!) SAK Alox Farmer, with blade, saw, can opener/screwdriver, and a wicked sharp awl. Several yards of kevlar cordage. All contained in a 4x5.25x1.25 in aluminum tin with watertight lid and secured with big fat rubber bands. And if it's not by itself in your pocket, it's in a small bag with bulkier supplies and small signal and clothing items like gloves, beanies, etc.
I found a 32 oz kleen kanteen in Walmart about a year ago and haven’t seen one since. But I’ve seen recent uploads this past month of people finding them at Walmart. I use mine daily whether I’m working or camping.
Walmart generally has a rope and chain section where you could have gotten a better choice of cordage for less. In any case, this was a pleasant video to watch.
Great job. Side note at Walmart, look at backpacks in the travel section, better quality and choices. Think outside the box for gear. Same thing with cordage. Look in hardware. Camping section is marked up more.
Great video brother. I don't think I would have done anything different. I've never herd of the wahoo before 😂😂. I think Jason will love his kit. I've definitely seen him get by with less before. He may even consider that to be Lamping. 😂
WELL I have read something about a sewing kit was your back up for your back ups..they knew how to make thread stronger and they gave you info on how to thread the needle and where to place your light at night to sew
Absolutely! Thrift shop FIRST, garage sale free boxes, ask neighbors about Boy Scout or camping items, look at every source of Mil-Surp, then, very last, get out Visa card for the Toys On Trucks at almost full-price. Adding cash to your kit will frequently NOT change functionality of item. #10 hobo stove cooker works as well as $80 titanium, with advantage of ABANDONMENT when you need space or weight in your pack. Titanium is Space Alien tech to always be hoarded carefully. Salvaged cordage that you won't trust to support you weight is great for a tarp or food bag haul-up. DIY fire kit made from candle stubs and flameless BIC will mostly work and only take a little time, but NO cash. Tarp salvaged from a free wrecked tent is light and good enough. Re-sew and re-seal if it isn't right. Having some cash and no debt gives you tons of options when opportunity strikes. I have plenty of North Face, Mountain Hardware, REI, MEI, MSR, Arcterix, USGI gear that I paid little or nothing for by being willing to fix a tear or wash the item. Thank goodness for fussy rich kids sporting daddies charge card to fund their camping trip with new gear every time.
You did great. I wouldn't have bought that whistle combo tool. Those are for kids. Other than that, Jason can't complain about HOW you did him a favor. Lol
I have found single wall water bottles at thrift stores, and more recently I found one oioin the side of the road at a bus stop, it had no lid but still a single wall somewhat wide mouth bottle that holds around750 mils
A couple weeks ago I stopped by harbor freight. I didn't make it past the hammock. Also picked up a 7" blade folding saw for 8.99. Haven't even pulled mine out of the sack yet. It'll be interesting to get Jason's opinion of it. Excellent vidya sir!
@@GBall_Vision yes sir. Always seem to be experimenting with something new. At 53 I've figured out what works for me but, can I make it lighter or smaller?
Just at a Walmart on 41 in Kennesaw yesterday. They now carry a mora 511 fixed blade in blaze orange. I believe the price was 17.97. I picked up the Chinese made Swiss tech Haltbar in VG-10 to try out. Choices, choices, choices.....
I bought a SOG aegis pocket knife marked at 9.00 on clearance. It rang ip for 5.00. I went back to grab the other one they had and a 20 something year old young man was standing on the isle looking at it. I told him it rang up for 5, handed him a 5 dollar bill, told him merry Christmas, and left with him grinning from ear to ear. That was a good day.
Water and quality sleep are the number 1 concerns for a short survival camping trip. Trying to secure food would be part of the challenge and fun. Starting a fire with dry wood and a bic only takes a little bit of intuitive understanding. Having a knife is probably more important for preparing animals into food than any other task. A light is a nice safety feature.
Also if you look around at Walmart they have a lot of the things you will find in the camping section. Like for instance, first aid you can find by pharmacy probably cheaper and cups go to home goods more rope options in a lot of areas as well. It best to take a look around for most the stuff it’s possible a lot cheaper for same or better products. Your mostly paying more because what it’s labeled as.
I'm not saying that Jason doesn't have decent gear... but he throws himself [and others] naked against all odds in his ''adventures''... and as a principal that's okay... I mean ''what if''... so the set that you bought for him, it will feel like a luxury... just ''premium''... Jason knows that... our ancestors were getting through with almost nothing, people around the world still do!... I understand that the industry wants to survive too... but not on my expenses... travel light, improvise, and adopt is the way I go... from what I see, that goes for you and Jason too... Oh JJ, you could have at least gotten him 2 Paydays! It is his birthday after all! But still, he'll know that you love him when sees that Payday you added to his kit. So fun to see you cracking up about the Wahoo! You were making me laugh! He could also throw all the gear into the pillow case and use the paracord to create a sling bag. What I would do differently, since I'm a woman, not an ultra-fit heat generating furnace (a.k.a. man) is buy one of those flimsy little mylar reflective survival blankets. I trade it for the whistle. I love your philosophy at the end. To buy what you can even on tight budget, even if the quality is not great. Then save to add/upgrade as you can. As someone who has gone over and over through times where I had disposable income to really tight times I know that when I had more money to spend I didn't always make the best decisions, and in fact probably made better purchasing decisions when I really had to think about, compare, read endless reviews/watch videos and save up for things. When I had more money I accumulated much more gear... but then just end up with lots of gear that I don't really use, and some of it I don't even really like. And later regret having spent the money on when the money could have been better spent on long-term food, off on adventures, and other things. So I definitely think your philosophy is good even when you have money, the most expensive stuff is not necessarily better. Like who really needs a $400 knife that's not going to do any more than a $15 Mora Companion?
Just my observation here. That "paracord" may not be the 7-9 string style it may be just full of long fibers. Now IMHO I wouldn't get the twin sheet I would have gone with a camp blanket.

Might should have checked out the hardware section and fishing section at Walmart. At my local locations, at least, they have different types of cordage in hardware. The fishing section, of course, has bankline but the 'score' there would have been that - at least my local (East Tennessee) locations sell bait knives that could also be seen as 'Mora wannabes' that are even less expensive than the one you got - or at least they were the last time I bought some for, I think, $2.98 plus tax - and, in fact, look very similar except the ones at Wally have black handles. I have bought several just to have extra utility blades around that I don't care about. As you might imagine they are hit or miss on off the shelf sharpness but touch up pretty easily when necessary.
A lot of individuals think they need to spend a bag of money for a survival kit. The idea of keeping it simple is key. A budget kit with modest skills is worth a high price kit with little or no skill at all.
Garbage is free. Such as two liter soda bottles for water, a metal coffee can for a pot, any type of rope will work for holding a tarp. Paracord is great, but you have limited needs for rope that needs to hold 550 pounds. Good luck on your next kit that is made up of 90% garbage.
You have to know which stores to shop Walmart is the most affordable Believe it or not And maybe we need more made in America again Supporting local growth jobs and controlling costs.
Love your channel. I'm curious, I live close to city,, But,,,,,,, I'm not far from State owned park land(woods with trails). If in a $&!+ hits fan situation, and can't get anywhere else living in an apartment, would you think going to state land and digging in and staying down until things seem to get better? I'm getting anxious with how the world is spinning round these days. We are 90 minutes from our bug out spot but if things get out of control not sure we could get there in a reasonable manner.?
I live in Canton Ga which is about half urban/wilderland.. My first inclination is to bug in before I’m forced to bug out.. Obviously it’s situational though
@FueltheFires agreed, I guess all the different scenarios would have different actions . I'm thinking woods is last resort but I don't want to get stuck in urban zombie land either.

I littlerally made a dollar tree survival kit for $100 70 on stuff from the dollar tree and 30 for a bag from Amazon 😂
Maybe a Dollar Store Challenge is in the future!
Kitchen supplies get the grease pot to cook in harbor freight buck clone knife and Walmart hardware section has camo 550 cord in rope section
Lost me on the aluminum. Good luck.
Walmart on the mainland definitely has more and better gear than the ones in Hawaii 😞😑😆🤙🤙🤙
Would love to visit there someday 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
@@FueltheFires you are always welcome 😁🤙🤙🤙
@@sdsi68If I ever get there I would need a good tour guide 👊🏻
@@FueltheFires I got you Bro 👊🤙🤙🤙
Might should have checked out the hardware section and fishing section at Walmart. At my local locations, at least, they have different types of cordage in hardware. The fishing section, of course, has bankline but the 'score' there would have been that - at least my local (East Tennessee) locations sell bait knives that could also be seen as 'Mora wannabes' that are even less expensive than the one you got - or at least they were the last time I bought some for, I think, $2.98 plus tax - and, in fact, look very similar except the ones at Wally have black handles. I have bought several just to have extra utility blades around that I don't care about. As you might imagine they are hit or miss on off the shelf sharpness but touch up pretty easily when necessary.
they had the hammock on sale once and i waited til it was on again to save $10
A lot of individuals think they need to spend a bag of money for a survival kit.
The idea of keeping it simple is key. A budget kit with modest skills is worth a high price kit with little or no skill at all.
That is a bait knife and does a good job.
Disappointed didn't get a Stansport Survival Knife Set, the ultimate in joke gifts and throw back to the 80s.
I would have gotten bank line instead of Paracord
Garbage is free. Such as two liter soda bottles for water, a metal coffee can for a pot, any type of rope will work for holding a tarp. Paracord is great, but you have limited needs for rope that needs to hold 550 pounds. Good luck on your next kit that is made up of 90% garbage.
What’s this guys channel he’s great!
Fuel The Fires
the fake buck knife at harbor feight by gordon
I didn’t see that one ☝🏻
Walmart has the sawyer mini
Mine didn’t unfortunately
Surely you could find a Benchmade within your budget LMAO
😂
Single walled canteen are almost impossible to find. Got mine from a thrift store. Of course you could shop online, but I prefer not to.
I’d add a pack of ramen or hotdogs at least lol
I would too!! I’ve done that many many times 🔥
Sawyer minis can be bought at Walmart
Jason could 'possibly' for 3 weeks on the kit.
550 cord is a little cheaper in the hardware section of Walmart.
$tree has a lot of good stuff
Was that big cup an Imusa brand?
Yes it was 👍🏻
Sawyer mini is like $18 or $19 at Walmart.
You have to know which stores to shop Walmart is the most affordable Believe it or not And maybe we need more made in America again Supporting local growth jobs and controlling costs.
True that 👍🏻
Love your channel.
@@jjrne6I can totally appreciate that 👍🏻
Fishing dep have good knives under 5 buck sharp won't last a long time but would have been good for the challenge
Surplus and thrift stores first. You can find a lot for less there. Just need to look at it all with a repurposing mind set.
