@@rzuuuuu That's bad luck - I had some teething issues with Android 14 on mine a few months ago (eg Google Wallet not working properly), but battery stayed about the same. I find it can be hard to separate the OS upgrade from physical battery degradation....
Meanwhile the Pixel 8 is nearly back to the right size (width anyway - no idea why screens went from 19:9 to 20:9).

@@rzuuuuu My Pixel 5 lasts 2 full days on a full charge, with around 4-5 hours screen on time normal use at home.
Surely should last 1 day even with data and gps use - probably just needs a new battery.

I bought it second-hand 3 years ago, and I've been using it ever since. I can safely say it's still my favorite Android phone. By making small compromises across the board it became the perfect phone for me- I hope phone manufacturers will realise that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. Having more RAM and a faster SOC isn't necessary when the hardware is already good enough, and a convenient form factor can make a phone so much more enjoyable to use. The fingerprint sensor to open the notification shade is one of my favorite Android features and I use it very very often. It probably won't be long till 'good enough' phones will be cheap to manufacture for smaller companies! I can't wait :)

I absolutely hate how big and bulky the Pixels have become. Recently bought and returned a Pixel 8, who wants that giant brick in their pocket?
I think the problem is the market is now obsessed with gigantic batteries to maximize screen-on time, since people in their 20's stare at their phones 24/7. Those of us who just want a small, light, pocketable phone are left out to dry, there is literally nothing on the market for us.

Nice review ! I'm eyeing at the lastest Pixels with enhanced software and harware, but their design is not as appealing to me as the Pixel 5 design, which I bought just before the 7 was on sale. I still prefer the camera placement in the corner, and it has perfect screen and form-factor. I'd buy a phone with the SAME DESIGN, but newer specs any day (powerful and efficient SoC, current optics, fingerprint reader on the side/under the screen, and a DEX mode). That would help me keep Google phones as daily drivers on the long run.

    Hi Damien,
Wow never did I expect such coverage of a phone which I think was overlooked due to it's mid-range specs, but here we are. I actually regret giving my Pixel 5 away now. It was certainly not the best phone I have ever had but it had some things going for it. I liked the fingerprint sensor, the size and that beautiful green colour. The sound on it was horrible and it is something I certainly don't miss. The biggest thing about that phone is that it was with me when I had Covid in late 2020 early 2021. Even though I couldn't use it that much it was a constant companion and so it was with me through a very tough time. I think the people who like me owned the phone liked it for what it was. I LOVE IT!
I am not a photographer or social media publisher so I don't need millions of pixels camera phone.
I am not a bag-carrier person so I need to carry my phone in my pocket.
I am just a regular person who uses daily-driving apps like maps, camera, WhatsApp, TH-cam, Instagram, and Twitter and this is the best phone for me.
Having said that, you can take great photos, play any games, and do whatever you with a so-called fruit phone!
    Best features I like;
it doesn't have a screen-fingerprint scanner so the screen is not so expensive
it is symmetric and flat, so it doesn't have a chin
    it weighs only 151 gr
The back fingerprint scanner has a scrolling feature

The only downside is that it is not going to get updated any more so I cannot choose my next phone.

Funny, I thought about buying the Pixel 5 just because of your LineageOS 21 video! You think it's a good idea to get one for that?

I started off with Pixel 2. Love that phone. Then the 4. Love that phone. Then the 5. Love that phone. Then the 6a. That was a good phone too. Now on 7pro. Beast of a phone. But out of all my phones I still have them all and they all work perfectly apart from the P2 which is losing battery I still love to use the 2 4 and 5! The form factor on those is just perfect

Centering the camera hole is the biggest downgrade. Having it on the side is much less noticeable and doesn't get in the way when viewing content in landscape.

I still have the 4A lying around. I don't use it anymore because of the OS upgrades, but my time with it was one of the most enjoyable ones I've had with a smartphone. Everything what you said about the Pixel 5 (many things even better, in my opinion) plus it was more pocket friendly. You should do a 4A postmortem as well 🙂.

I bought a used Pixel 5 last year as a backup phone, it's my best decision ever! Now I've been using it as my primary phone because I love it's size. It handles my daily tasks like a champ! I don't play games on this phone though, I'd rather use my other 6.7 inch phone for Netflix and some games if I want to. ;)

Shout out to the forgotten Pixel, the Pixel 4a 5G, the P5s bigger and cheaper twin brother lol. They had the same processor and performance was great on that phone. I loved the matte plastic build and rear fp scanner, definitely miss the headphone jack too 🤕. I do prefer the size of the 8 I have now tho.

Have had one since launch and have no desire to replace it. It's the perfect device for me and I've been with Google since their launch of the Nexus line. I'll stick with the 5 and android 14 for as long as I can because I doubt Google is gonna build another device this size, it's just perfect.

I had two Pixel 5a phones. I really liked them, but they had a couple of issues that made them unusable. The screens were so bad that they scratched easily, and the last one cracked when I dropped it on the carpet. It cracked on the inside, and the heat was so bad during the summer that it shut off while I was using the GPS, and I didn't know where I was going. But the battery life was really good, I loved the camera, and it had a headphone jack. Even though it was fragile, it's still one of my favorite Pixel phones.

That was the year that although there was no 5XL Pixel, there was a 4a with 5G -- and it was the sweet spot phone in the middle. The larger 4a had to be bigger in order to have a larger battery to accomodate the 5G band. While it also had the camera set up as the 5, it also had the headphone jack that the regular non-5G 4a retained. Not gonna lie, that was a pretty good year those Pixels came out.

Still going strong with the Pixel 5. The software experience is second to none, and the hardware is adequate for most situations and most people. I really hope Google makes another device with similar form factor, as the size and slimness of it is hard to come by today.

I'm still using my 3+ year old Pixel 5 and though Ive had a new battery put in I dont think about upgrading to a newer phone. It runs plenty fast for what i need. Id had two Samsungs before this Pixel and at the two year point they were slow and I wanted a new phone. I see me keeping this phone for at least 2 more years provided that Google doesn't make some stupid update that makes me hate the phone before then.
