Steve Berrios was a Master Percussionist and one of the first fully conversant in both the history, folklore and development of both Afro Carribean Music and African American Music commonly known as Jazz. This unique and interesting mix began as a byproduct of the confluence of these streams in the 1940 in New York Latin Jazz. I remember seeing his setup at a festival and noticed his unique setup of cowbells around the drum set and reflect on how ubiquitous that idea is now some thirty years later. A truly unique artist and innovator, may he rest in Peace.QDEP.
E.J. Rodriguez Thank you for the kind and thoughtful statements. Steve mastered music genres and then did his own thing with them all. He was truly a master. Nerida Berrios
Saludos
A unique style of playing Guaguanco with a cowbell set up never seen again. Wish i could have been near the drumset to figure how this fantastic maestro organised his patterns. I still can't understand all the finesse of it to this day. Maestro Steve Berrios, you're still an inspiration and you're very missed. Rest in peace.
Steve Berrios, Percussionist: February 1945 - July 2013 - R.I.P. Steve played with Dizzy Gillespie and with Art Blakey and with other post-bop jazz leaders. He was a close friend of trumpeter Wallace Roney, who was very distressed to learn of the death of his friend.
And i know a VHS tape exists called "Latin rythms for drumset" by the late great Steve Berrios, So sad unavailable anywhere on the internet. Would die to have a chance to look at...
