If conscription doesn't first call up all the politicians and their families, then it should never be mandatory: once upon a time Royalty used to fight first on the battlefield as a sign honour to their beliefs and causes. Conscientious objection isn't guaranteed and is quite limited in scope. You're brought before a board and have to "explain your beliefs", and may be denied. You can't refuse based on politics, expediency, or self-interest. It's not as easy as you're making it out to be.
The bottom line is: Conscription IS slavery, but it's just that there are some niche ways to avoid it, if you manage to convince your enslaver (the state).

The middle class shrinks and owning your own home becomes unattainable, the country rots away in every conceivable category, and you are supposed to fight for what? So that you potentially lose your life leaving behind children without their mother or father while the wealthy continue forward, unaffected? Those that do not want to be in the military will distract and waste a lot of time for others that have goals for themselves and their current team with negativity and discipline issues. I enlisted when the volunteer military started after the Vietnam War and for a few years we still had draftees in that senior leadership had to spend a lot of time addressing their negative attitudes. After my first hitch, the volunteer military became more professional, with better training and attitudes were more positive as the negative draftees finished their enlistments and were discharged.

I can proudly say I have so far talked my Australian 4x fit young sons and 2x daughters ever serving the neo Feudal Nanna state, no more working class blood for war profiteer bankers and a Foreign King/Queen. Hell No, we won't go. +110 years of family military service finished with me. Never register, run away at first opportunity if caught and remember 'fragging' did not stop at the conclusion of Vietnam.

Nope, as a grandson of a black US Vietnam veteran I would say hell no if you’re black. Back in World War II 1 million black service members were excluded from the VA benefits that created a wealth gap between white and black citizens. In Vietnam, black service members not only faced racism from the Vietnamese but from their white service members . To this day you’ve got Vietnam era and gulf war soldiers who been denied VA loans and health benefits, so if you’re black, no don’t go serve even if they threaten you with jail time take the jail time instead.

The entire reason the US military stopped conscription was due to fragging. What is fragging? It's when a disgruntled soldier puts a hand grenade or anti personnel mine under his superior officer's pillow to get back at the US government for forcing him to fight a war he didn't want to fight. It became so much of a problem that officers were deathly afraid of the men serving under them and it torpedoed overall morale.

I came across this video on Father's day morning. I had planned to call my dad (who's pro-Trump and pro-gun, and all about Uhmerica) and tell him that I'm open to recieving money from him (which I had previously blew him off about in a heated exchange of emails). Hearing Andrew's message totally changed my mind. I felt a sense of autonomy and freedom when I decided (because of Andrew's message here) that I would not bring up the money issue with my dad. (I still called him though, and we just "shot the sh*t").

There was a time when the benefits of military service in the US was a reasonable consideration for many young people to learn and advance, but when you see how veterans are treated now, and how easily the politicians get us into bad situations, who would want it? Besides, the US government wants to spend a lot more money on other types of government jobs and on "push button" military technology instead of focusing on the benefits and welfare of military personnel.

Being an american veteran is life on easy mode. If you do it correctly you can get a doctorate in any field for free, you get free healthcare, VA home loans, several states dont even charge you property tax if your disability is over a certain percentage, and you can even become a "nomad" by doing your uni overseas and gaining residency in the time it takes to complete uni. This isnt an argument to join the military though, its just pointing out that the "they treat vets bad" thing is just a meme, post vietnam it was real but now not so much.

Yeah, we've had all-volunteer military in US since 1975, yet the military gets all kinds of benefits and discounts and boarding first on Delta Airlines, etc. and military volunteers still complain. So I don't want to raise sons in a country were I have to worry about conscription. Conscription is a real consideration. Conscription never pushes Modern Feminism off the headlines, so no Americans ever think about conscription in pop culture. It is a real problem and a real consideration in raising boys under another country's conscription laws.

I do not think mandatory service is a good idea, but I think Starship Troopers may have had it right, where people earn their citizenship through military or government service. That would help people to protect and improve their nation instead of, at least in the USA, hating on their nation in an attempt at being "cool" (when in fact, all they are is a fool). If you do not like your country, go to one that you do like.

Not a concern, since any nation that attempts that will find the person dissolving their citizenship in that situation. There's also a lot of ways to become ineligible...you can side with the enemy of that nation for example, spreading that enemy's propaganda. So long as you have moved out of the nation in question it's a simple matter to stay in the other nation you have citizenship in. I highly doubt Ukraine would want a Russian propagandist brought back into their nation to serve for example lol!!
